Nice post --

Question for Speakerphile -- I am not that knowledgeable on Pioneer. What is the difference between the Elite VSX line and the SC line? Seems like the VSX-53 is pretty close to the SC-63.

Dedicated Theater Room Setup (on a reasonable budget):
Sony VPL-HW55ES + VAPEX 120" Fixed Frame Screen
Denon X4000 (used as Pre-Pro) + Sherbourn PA 7-350 + Velodyne SMS-1
B&W Nautilus 803 (L/R) + B&W CDM-CNT + DefTech BPX + BP2X (surrounds)
Seaton SubM HP+ Master and Slave (boom!)
Sources: PS4 + PS3 + Xbox 360 + Tosh HD-XA2 + DirecTV HR21-200

There are some feature difference as well, especially as you go up the line, but the primary difference is that the SC series uses Pioneer Elite's well regarded Class D-3 amplifiers. They are some of the most powerful in their class.

These have not been discontinued yet, though Pioneer usually releases new models in early to mid-summer.

These offers should be good through 4.6.13.

Checked stock online for the Houston area and no 65's or 67's are available; about 2 dozen stores. Only a few stores show the 63 in stock. Better hurry if you want one.eek.gif

Please check with your local stores using the store finder tool I linked. A lot of the inventory is kept in warehouses, so it may not show up as in-stock at your local store on our web site. This is due to the higher cost of these models and the fact that they don't sell as many units at each store. So keeping them in the warehouse allows us to make them available to more stores. The store can place an order for you and have the unit in less than a week in most cases.

Will do!

The Pioneer models on Amazon are from 3rd party "marketplace" sellers and are not covered under the price match policy. Furthermore, those sellers are not authorized Pioneer Elite dealers.

Even if they are authorized, that wouldn't be an approved channel for price matching. Taking a quick look though, I don't see any that are.

When I worked at BBY I got my Elite receiver for about half off and the employee pricing was 5% above cost.

Yes, but don't you think that if Pioneer is looking to replace the receiver they could have given BB a great deal :)

That may be true. I'm simply saying that when I worked there (a year and a half ago) Elite receivers specifically were marked up about 100%. Pioneer may have given them a good deal, or BBY may just be trying to get rid of their inventory because a new line is coming out. I know some manufacturers actually fine retailers if they still have last year's products in inventory when the new line is out.

I didn't work in a Magnolia store didn't have any experience with those products so I couldn't tell you what the markup is on them. When I worked there only Mag stores even had access to those products unless you got a consultation. The only way I got a Mag receiver and TV is because our store GM was also the regional GM and one of those stores in his region was a Mag store so he pulled some strings for me. I think that has changed since and you can now go into any BBY store and order Mag products but I could be wrong.

Only select stores (design centers or Magnolia stand-alones) have access to product lines from brands like McIntosh, Marantz Reference, Sonus Faber, B&W Diamond, etc....there are some products that a standard Magnolia Home Theater store can special order, but AFAIK they do not have access to upper-echelon products without doing a hand-to or referral to a nearby design center if there is one.

If the Elite receivers have been sitting in distribution centers for a while, then Best Buy paid what they paid for them. Additionally, cost on stuff like this generally doesn't fluctuate much, even when they're discontinued. When products go on sale or clearance, it's simply an indication that margin has gone down and not cost. I don't understand what linking a ~$10,000 amplifier that likely has a much bigger margin than a Pioneer receiver has to do with anything. The only time I see stuff like Elite receivers go for at, near, or below cost is when they become at risk SKUS, meaning that the product is generally long discontinued and having sit in warehouses would cost the company money. Product like this was sold below cost because the company would rather have taken a loss than lose money with it just sitting there. I remember the last few SC-25s selling for something like $584.98

These are ostensibly fair, even great deals on Elite receivers so I don't really see wse's issue here....is it because a dealer actually makes some money on the product? They really are not bad deals considering that Pioneer is very strict on their Elite line. They expressly state that there are zero authorized online Elite dealers and buying a product from such a dealer results in complete invalidation of the manufacturer warranty.

If you are going to complain about dealers making margin, you certainly picked the wrong hobby. Do keep in mind that products that sell less often(like $1000+ AVR's) have to sit on shelves longer and thus have higher margins. These products also require more specialized(more expensive) sales people to sell them. This is pretty typical in high-end audio retail. Also, the manufacturers in most cases limit the amount of discounting, even when negotiating with customers, that dealers can offer. If you want to be mad at someone, the retailer shouldn't be your focus.

You decided quite a few posts ago, if I recall, that you were going to wait for an SC-68 deal. Since then you just keep challenging everything. Please move along if you have nothing constructive to say.

Though I am an employee of Magnolia Home Theater, the views and opinions I express on this forum are those of my own and not my employer.

Everyone selling in a free market has the right to make as much profit as possible. Everyone buying in a free market has the right to pay as little as possible for the product they want. Somewhere the two opposing viewpoints meet in the middle and a tranasction is completed to the satisfaction of both parties. This is called a good or fair value.

The prices that Magnolia is offering the current SC series receivers are more than a fair value to the consumer who wants one. I applaud Magnolia for once again bringing good products to market at fair prices. If I needed one, I would not hesitate to grab one at these closeout prices. The Pioneer Elite VSX-52 I currently use as a pre/pro meets all my needs right now. BTW, I bought a brand new unit at Magnolia last year at a closeout price at 33% off list. I was very happy at the time and still am - it was a good and fair value for my money. Plus I got a full factory warranty as Magnolia is an authorized dealer - so no worries here! The current discounts on the SC's appear to be even slightly better. Good work Speakerphile and thanks for bringing the info in this thread to everyones attention.
