Just heard that American TV & Appliance is closing (midwestern chain). Going out of business sale starts this Thursday.

Might be a good place to find some great deals...and they generally have some decent stuff in stock, from displays & projectors to AVRs, theater seating and beer fridges. smile.gif

I love my iPhone, but it will never replace my turntable.

Good for those in MW ... but it looks like their web presence is shut down.

Dedicated Theater Room Setup (on a reasonable budget):
Sony VPL-HW55ES + VAPEX 120" Fixed Frame Screen
Denon X4000 (used as Pre-Pro) + Sherbourn PA 7-350 + Velodyne SMS-1
B&W Nautilus 803 (L/R) + B&W CDM-CNT + DefTech BPX + BP2X (surrounds)
Seaton SubM HP+ Master and Slave (boom!)
Sources: PS4 + PS3 + Xbox 360 + Tosh HD-XA2 + DirecTV HR21-200

They never had a web presence, really. They are all about the enormous showroom. The website was only the weekly flier and locations. But yes, good for those in the Midwest.

I was in the one here in town a few weeks ago . . . sad. Run down, dirty, like they'd given up. I was wanting to look at speakers, and the kid couldn't get the demo blu-ray players to work frown.gif

I have bought a lot of stuff there over the years and it used to be a nice store with good stuff. Too bad too, because I like having options in town other than Best Buy. RIP

I wish Audio King was still around on Merle Hay.

Absolutely horrible markups that they are calling "liquidation sales", plus widespread local news reports of customers being overcharged at the checkout counter. People were paying 25% more for tvs than I paid at Christmas and walking out happy as I was walking through the store shaking my head at the near list pricing.

Call it a liquidation sale and all the idiots flock to the stores like sheep just knowing they are getting great deals when in fact they are getting screwed.

There was a billiard and game room store in town that I swear had a "going out of business" sale about once a year for three or four years. rolleyes.gif

It's still there, but it actually DID go out of business and now has a new name.

Kind of got a raw deal, though. They had never made a late payment on the loan they carried on their inventory, but when the economy went south, the bank (Wells Fargo) got nervous and yanked their loan, putting them in a real bad spot.

But make no mistake, it's still there. smile.gif Type in the name of the original store .com and you'll see.

Oh I drive by there several times a week. I never stepped foot in the place, but they ran the TV ads all the time smile.gif

Stopped by the Madison store tonight, thinking they'd have dropped their ridiculous pricing on electronics now that they are actually getting close to cleaning the place out.    They had a pair of demo Polk OWM3 surrounds marked at $120.  They were pretty scuffed up.  I asked the sales guy if there was a mistake, since I could buy a new pair on Amazon for $99.  He just shrugged his shoulders.

That's pretty much been my experience there.  Jacked up prices and people scurrying in to take advantage of the great "clearance" deals.

Unfortunately they actually raised their prices. People think they are getting deals but there not. Everything still WAY over priced.

I stopped by last night thinking sometime they'd have to get to the point where prices get dropped for a fast cleanout.  I did see a pair of new in box Polk RtiA7's there @ $280 per speaker.  I think that's a decent deal, but not that up on them.

What they did is increase all the prices to original retail then marked down a bit. For example by the sony 4k tv was marked down to like 4800. Best buy had that saw tv for less. They have denon 4520 marked down to 2000 but I can get it from a certified dealer cheaper than that.

I really liked American but think this whole going out of business deal is kinda a joke

I think I saw those speakers. Were they floor models? If so one was smashed up. No other speakers left really.

Yeah, that was what I concluded too.  Everything is marked @ full MSRP and all discounts are calculated off that. I was also a fan of American.  They were very willing to dicker on price, and most of my furniture came from their scratch and dent room.

This was at the beltline store. These speakers were supposedly new in box.  One of the boxes did have holes in it.  GIven what I've heard about what people have pulled out of "new" boxes they could very well have been repackaged floor models.    It's too bad they decided to go out this way.

Was looking at receivers

Mad East - Out
Mad West - Had a denon AVR-300 for $100!!! ...oh wait, it was just $100 off the jacked up price. Sale prices at BB were better...Also had an AVR-400 and a few others.. all open-box and all scuffed up.
Appleton - Had about pair of Yamaha RX-V475's (BB was $50 cheaper down the street), a couple of Sony's, and a pair of Denon's. ....Prices overall still sucked.

Only "deals" you may find are on appliances & furniture....they still had a ton on hand for those....for some reason just because it's "Store closing, buy now" people aren't buying 3 or 4 fridges per household...might have something to do with it.

As for me, stick a fork in them...they are dead to me. At this point I'm leaning towards waiting a few weeks and then picking up a Spring 14' receiver with HDMI2.0.

I don't know if this applies to this specific company's closeout sale, but the typical practice over the last decade has been when that a chain goes out of business, they bring in a 'closeout sale specialist' company to staff the stores and set pricing. Invariably their pricing tactics are exactly what has been described in this thread. The stuff that does not sell at the ridiculous prices ends up being shipped out somewhere else, maybe even to another closeout at some other chain of stores that the same specialist has been contracted to handle.

As usual when the guy who started the American TVs sold out - it went down hill.

At first they would not match any competitors price what was more than 25 miles away.

Then they would not match any internet pricing.

Then they would match some internet pricing.

And finally after seeing their business decline terribly (their parking lot was always empty) - they were forced to start running TV commercials saying that they matched almost any internet price, etc...

Too late!

I hope this is a lesson to other businesses...

Sadly, it probably isn't.
