Today's Show:
When we bought our first devices that supported HDMI way back in 2006 the hot devices could handle the HDMI 1.1 specification. At that time the big deal was an AV receiver that would take next generation audio formats decoded on Blu-ray players and sent to a receiver that could accept PCM audio via HDMI. HDMI is still the only way to get next generation audio into a receiver. more...

That is incorrect and is some of the misinformation that we try to correct in the HDMI section of the AVS Forum.

DENONLink is another digital way and it is certified to handle all of the lossless audio methods (I'm not sure they are "next generation" anymore). Also the analog outputs of many Blu Ray Disc players will work as well. The AV receiver converts the analog inputs to 192/24 and then performs bass management on them. Any decent 192/24 A/D converter should be able to provide a conversion with no loss of fidelity. After that step, the rest of the signal chain is just as if the HDMI signal made it to the receiver.

Finally, my hope for HDMI 1.5 is that is doesn't come any time soon. Certainly from an audio standpoint anything greater than 7.1-channel LPCM seems a waste of bits. From a video standpoint, we're not even coming close to using all of the HDMI 1.4a capabilities yet. Why should we have to replace receivers and switchers yet again for another set of capabilities that almost no one uses? The biggest problem with HDMI is the 7 (or is it more than that?) "standards" that it currently includes.

Would this be a bad place to re-add Closed Captioning support? I'm not sure Closed Captioning data can or should be embedded directly into the HD video stream like it was in SD streams, so it could be a separate data channel that could be processed or ignored by the display.

Seems like the only huge hole in existing technology that would justify another version of the spec. If not for this I'm firmly in the camp of stop changing the specs already!

We can not game at full 1080p at more than 24hz people. To people who like watching movies only, your good for the most part, but for people who like wandering a virtual reality post-apocalyptic landscape with their trusty assault rifle "Road Warrior" style, 24hz is not acceptable.

My wish for 1.5 is:

Mandatory ability for Tvs to do full 1080p @ 60h/eye in 3D or higher.

Mandatory 4k 3D processing power.

Support for 120hz input and full 1080p in 3D.
