Today's show

Paramount released the Transformers HD-DVD on Tuesday and if you have an HD-DVD player, this one is a must buy. If you don't have a player yet, this movie might be a good reason to finally pull the trigger and get one. As a quick overview, the video quality is amazing, the surround sound is awesome and it's packed with special features. We aren't typically big fans of special features, but some of them are really worth your time. more...

i have the movie on standard def. DVD... but i swear to anything that this film alone is enough for me to slap out the cash on an HD DVD player... Enough said... Transformers=One of the Best VFX films ever... even if you aren't a fan this will be a must-see even including the non-fans

Just saw the HD-DVD last night. Even the "Head of the Finance Committee," who is more of a drama and chick-flick type, was impressed, and I don't even have a real current TV.

Why would you say Blu-ray is the only way to go, just out of curiosity?

I own both and see no distinct advantage for bluray at this time. They have a select few titles that are definitely up on HD-DVd by the end of the year, but I see them being tied if anything by that point.

Current Projects:
IN PROGRESS (80%) - Building 3D Theater room.
IN PROGRESS (30%) - Building Lounge/Hallway Area.
IN PROGRESS (15%) - Building Home LAN (4 PCs).
ON HOLD - Building Home Gym.
ON HOLD - Building Simulation Room (Eyefinity).
ON HOLD - Building Theater room (Sim2 HT380, 2.35 14ft wide).

What movies were you comparing?

Nah, can just as easily go HD DVD, or better yet both. Remove head from format sand, rinse.

I don't care about the format war, but Transformers was one of the biggest disappointments of a movie that I have seen in quite some time. Talk about a watered down movie, way too much time focus on the human side of things and stupid jokes like Bumblebee peeing oil. Don't get me started on the joke of a love story thrown into it. If you want to see a real Transformers movie, you should check out the 1985 cartoon version, its a lot of fun. I just hope that Bay and Spielberg can pull this franchise out of the toilet for the 2nd movie. I do have hope though, the 1st XMEN movie was pretty weak, but the 2nd and 3rd really did the trilogy justice. (Yes I know that XMEN was not done by Bay or Spielberg, I was just giving an example of a recent weak movie that got better with sequels)

I sat at a local AVS group meet for 6 hours were we did a HD-DVD / Blu-ray shootout.
Final conclusion from all 10 people.. there is NO difference.
Here is a list of what the members Theater had in it.

Projector: Sony Qualia 004
Screen: Stewart 133" Firehawk
HD-DVD: Toshiba XA-1
Blu-ray: Panasonic DMP-BD10

Movies that we compared:
Corpse Bride
Aeon Flux
MI3

I think there were other movies...but it was a little over a year ago..so I can't remember.

Just my .02

OH...by the way...I am format neutral... I own a Sony S300 Blu-ray and a Toashiba XA-2 HD-DVD...they both look the same in my theater.

Like Arad, I misssed the Transformers thing by about 15 years (I'm 45.) Watched it with my 9-year old son (in SD, unfortuanately. Don't have HD DVD - yet.) My wife and I thought it was cute. My son loved the action. I have to say, the SD transfer was pretty amazing, too.

I'll double-dip when I get an HD player.

I also agree with Arad, that for a benchmark release, it should have had lossless audio. I know Paramount had a choice to make, and the extras were more important, as the DD+ track is awesome, by all accounts.

It's just that high def optical is only about 1% of the market, so those that have it now are the enthusiasts. I think Paramaount wants to entice J6P.
