First time calibration.

I am having my new 55D8000 ISF video calibrated at the end of the month.

As I am set-up I run my blu-ray (sony BDPS570) and my PVR, (motorola DCX3400) through my receiver (pioneer VSX-1125-K) with a single input into the ARC HDMI port on the TV.

I would like to create 2 different calibrations on the tv - one for tv viewing, and one for movies.

Is calibration done only on the tv or does the receiver need to be calibrated as well?

.

Only on the TV. Pioneer receivers don't tend to have any calibration adjustments.

Have you had a chance to calibrate a d8000 yet? Does the 3D need to be calibrated seperately, or does the tv adjust to 3D content for the best image quality?

Also how does one have two movie settings? One for THX calibration and one for ISF?

Yeah, I have. Yes, 3D needs to be done separately.
It will only remember one movie mode setting for 2D and one for 3D. THX and ISF calibration are essentially the same; no need for different memories for them.

On my D550 there was an advanced section in the service menu and pressing 0-0-0-0 on the remote showed two options that were grayed out: "Picture_2d" and "Picture_3d." Are these available on some high end sets like the D8000 and what do they contain?

So, it didn't even have the "Advanced" section at all?

So, my receiver says that it is THX certified - I take that to mean that the receiver is capable of rendering audio and video content that will meet the requirements that a THX film would demand, in terms of color, blacks, convergence, etc. without any loss or degraded quality - It uses the Marvell Advanced Qdeo 1080p/24fps Scaler for video.

I just want to make sure that the passthrough will be accurate to the disc content when the tv is calibrated...

Every HDMI equipped Pioneer receiver that I've used is accurate with the HDMI video (no degradation).

I was able to get the advanced section to show up in the menu using a factory remote emulator but entering this section doesn't do anything and '0000' would not activate it. After I enter '0000' the service menu goes off and then back on again. btw, the emulator trick opens up many additional options under the other menu items (Control, SVC, etc.)

It's in German. (The program -- not zoyd's post. )

I was hoping to disable the gamma shifts in the advanced menu just to see how it affected performance but haven't been able to get into it yet.

Does this let you access WB Movie? Also, once you're in can you use the regular remote to navigate or must you stick with the emulator? BTW, does an English version exist?

No, WB movie is under the (currently not accessible) advanced menu.

Yes, regular remote works for navigation.

No English version but the emulator tab is easy to navigate once connected.

It's more involved than simple contrast enhancement and done to achieve a different effect on plasmas. The distribution of all Y gray levels is adjusted based on APL, low APL=lower gamma=more shadow detail in bright environments

I was able to access the additional areas without a problem and took the opportunity to disable the Eco Sensor and Natural Mode, both of which I never use. The only thing that confused me was the various prompts that show up the first time I started the emulator. Starting it a second time was fast and automatic. I have the D550 LCD, BTW.

nope, though advanced has always showed up on my D550 LCD (even without the emulator trick) but when I press 0000 only two grayed out options appear: Picture_2D and Picture_3D

Yep, those fields I mentioned are under the picture_2d menu. I can't even get them to appear grayed out.

They show up on my PS51D550 if I hit 0000 on the Advanced menu. However, they disappear again if I hit Factory and 3Speed (and they still show up as gray if I hit 0000 again in the factory mode SM).

I can't even get into the Expert menu, not to mention the advanced Picture_2D.

I just bought the service manual for my LN32D550. Hopefully, it should show how to enter the advanced portion of the service menu via a factory remote (or the emulated version of the factory remote in my case). I will report back if I find anything useful in the manual.

no luck, just found out that you can press info then factory while in the user menu to directly jump to the unlocked version of the service menu (no need to follow the previous procedure detailed above)
