Dominic,

My point, of course, is that the x and y values for total black (Y = 0) are meaningless. There is no color at total black and the equations for x,y at that point will blow up. Use any non-zero value to overcome this. I'm sure that zoyd will make the appropriate modification to alleviate the situation.

Thanks Larry. I wasn't concerned about the -99999 values, since they are meaningless as you say. However, when these numbers show up, any subsequent entry (valid or not) will erase the entire row of Y Target values. That was the "quirk" I was reporting. 0 is a valid value for Y and should not cause the software to misbehave.

To fix something I need to be able to reproduce it, so if you could give me step by step instructions on how to cause the crash I can take a look.

On my system the error can be reproduced quite readily:

1. Delete (or rename) the ColorHCFR.ini file to start "clean"
2. Start the program
3. Start a new measurement, accepting all defaults (internal generator, simulated sensor)
4. Do NOT select any column, just click on the Continuous Measures icon.
5. After about 20 seconds, the error message "Encountered an improper argement" would pop up.

Exiting the program from that point will still leave the Test Colors window running.

Interestingly, if I take one set of measurements properly and then start a second measurement sheet without exiting the program, the error will not occur.

Ok, reproduced. This happens only with a real meter (simulated is ok) and only when you try to do continuous measures without first selecting a column or running one of the sweeps. I'll upload a fixed version. In the meantime you will need to select a color or sweep to measure prior to running continuous measures.

So I've uploaded a new 3.2.1 version with the following changes:
  • Fixed crash when user does nothing other than run free measures on startup
  • Fixed manual entry of 0 values (forced to very small number)
  • Constructed a better Granger rainbow image
  • Added some additional patterns including the evaluation sequence using Casino Royale discussed here

As far as I'm concerned, this IS gaming.

Did you really need to quote that entire post in your reply?

Great advice; for me the internal generator is a vast improvement over a BD.

Is a second HTPC monitor necessary when exclusively using sweeps as opposed to continuous measures? Am I missing something not using continuous measures?

How does one make Ted's patterns appear in HCFR?

Sourceforge is currently not accepting new uploads but as soon as it does I have another update. Until then you can download it here.

Update of test patterns [same version number] and added hotkeys to pull-up the following patterns quickly:

Code:
Pattern Hotkeys
    "ALT+1", Probe Alignment
    "ALT+2", Neutral Gradient
    "ALT+3", Luma Ramps
    "ALT+4", Spectrum
    "ALT+5", Light skin tone
    "ALT+6", Dark skin tone
    "ALT+7", Dark detail
    "ALT+8", Granger rainbow
Evaluation Image [light skin] Use to check proper skin tone and other natural colors.

Evaluation Images [dynamic range]

Dynamic range 1: Use to check that highlight is not blown out (detail remains in lamp glow) and deep blue background is smooth and without artifacts.

Dynamic range 2: Use to check cloud detail is not blown out and that detail remains in dark green foliage. Also great image to test effects of your sharpness control.

Dynamic range 3: Dark detail - use to check for black crush. Clear detail should be seen working your way back from the tire to the Batman, and to total black in the cape.

@madshi - Can madTPG be modified to accept images?

Hi zoyd,

The Pattern Hotkeys seem to taking over the keyboard even when I'm editing (Editable data). For example, if I try to enter 0.2 into a cell, the Neutral Gradient screen would pop up instead of the 2 go into the cell.

Of course it's possible, although it would cost a bit of work. How would you provide the images? If you provide PNG I'd have to add a full PNG source logic to madVR/madTPG. It would be easier for me if you would provide me with direct RGB data. Do you need support for 10bit or 16bit images? Probably it would be easiest to allow either 8bit or 16bit RGB data. And I suppose you'd always wanted to have the images zoomed like MPC-HC's "touch window from inside"?

A second monitor for the program is nice because it's easier to see what's going on during continuous measures but not absolutely necessary. Most people use continuous measures to adjust real-time while the measurements can be watched.

To use Ted's disk follow the instructions on his web page, there are some preset sweeps available as well as loadable custom sweeps.

I run it directly off my HTPC. I just use the camera icon to get an instantaneous reading.
I find that making adjustments with the TV's menu showing affects the readings, so continuous measures don't help me much, anyway.
But yes, far superior to running it off a disc.

Dear madshi!
Possible to make patterns with constant average relative luminance=equal energy (but not constant average picture level) =15%?
By type lumagen

From the Radiance Tech Tip 5: Using Test patterns document:

...The central measurement window can be adjusted from 0 to 100 IRE, in steps of 5 IRE. At the same time, a boarder that is of equal area to the central window varies the opposite way from 100 to 0 IRE, in steps of 5 IRE. The background is 50 IRE. The three elements of the test pattern, add up

I am new to the claibration stuff and need some help to get HCFR (3.2.0 or 3.2.1) running with my spyder4.
1: I cant find the tool spyd4en in the tools folder? Instead theres a oeminst. Is there any documention how to handle (options?)
2: running oeminst with some (spyd4en-)parameters that I found in some other forums returns some "dll copied".
3: When I start HCFR i cant choose a calibration file.

Is there a quick guide what to choose in the menus? I want to caliobrate a Panasonic PT 8000 projector on a Silverfire 2.5 screen and have no glue how to start.

The linear light selection is constant ARL (gamma light = constant APL). To get 15% average set it to 42% linear light, 10% ARL -> 35% linear light.

I had no problems with driver install. My question was how to copy the calibration files.

For the display type files you will need the spyder4 install disk to use with oeminst, more detailed info here.

Tree of Life - Terrence Malick

The lamp and sky shots are also from that movie, the attention to natural lighting and color reproduction in the movie is stunning.
