I hadn't used if for a while but I wanted to evaluate my new Pany 210 blu-ray player for SD playback. I set the player to output 16:9 but the content was shown as 4:3 and obviously squeezed from the sides (distorted). As a double check, I put it in my PS3 and it showed the same result. When I set the player(s) to output 4:3 it seems to be displayed properly. A quick search on DVDtalk.com seems to indicate that the disc is authored as 4:3. http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/30032...hqv-benchmark/
Quote:

On the Standard Definition disc, all of the introduction and explanatory material is provided in 4:3 video. In fact, the entire disc is flagged as 4:3, despite the fact that many of the test patterns should actually be viewed in 16:9 widescreen. This is problematic on many upscaling DVD players that will automatically pillarbox 4:3 content into the center of a 16:9 TV, in that case leaving no way to view the patterns in their original widescreen aspect ratio, negatively affecting the results on some of them. Fortunately, this shouldn't be a problem on all DVD players. The audio is Dolby Digital 2.0 in a simple stereo mix. There's a small amount of music and narration, and it sounds fine, but this simply isn't an audio test program.

It seems silly but it looks like it should be played at 4:3 because when I do, it plays it as though it was 16:9.

Just wanted to confirm that I was approaching this correctly.

So, am I to assume that I've answered my own question?

. . . . and, I hadn't realized there was a 2.0 version. Where can I get that version?

Hi angryht,

I have been looking everywhere for the same version of the HQV Benchmark DVD, but I have not been able to find it.

Have you had any luck in finding where to get it?

I sent an email to Qualcomm, who apparently bought hqv. They sent me a response about a month ago saying they would get back to me. They haven't followed up yet but I just sent another email. I'll let you know what I hear.

As an update, I got the 2.0 versions (both SD and Blu-ray) from IDT/Qualcomm. Since they are in a transition period in the ownership of the parent company, they actually sent them to me free of charge. This was a result of having to wait a little over a month while they sorted out trying to get information about the discs. Anyway, the customer service rep has indicated that she would provide the disc to others for free to others if interested. She said that this is a 'limited-time free of charge' promotional time offer while supplies last.

Her name is Mia and she was very helpful. Here is her email:

Hi here is the email I got back

Hi xxxxx
hahahahahaha! Word travels fast!

Yes, because of transition issues between IDT and Qualcomm, the discs are available for free for a short time because we don't have the mechanism in place to charge for them. I am amazed at how many requests have come in as a result! smile.gif

Thanks very much for your interest - I am currently gathering as many copies as I can from the previous vendor and will send out on a first-come-first-served basis. Because of the limited number of copies I'm able to secure, I'm limiting the quantity to one set per person - if you know of others who are interested in this offer and are planning to spread the word, please include that detail, if you're willing.

I'm pleased that this is a valued item - perhaps all the positive feedback will encourage a version 3.0 from the Qualcomm team!

thanks again,

Hmmm...I dropped Mia an email on Friday expressing interest in acquiring a copy and havn't heard back. I wonder if that means I didn't make the cut.

Anyone else receive their HQV 2.0 disks yet? My last message from Mia was on 6/25 saying that she would ship them out ASAP. As of today, they still haven't arrived.frown.gif

Yeah, it could also be that her manager(s) got wind of the give-away and pulled the plug. It costs money to ship. In any case, I appreciate you giving us the heads-up on her offer and her trying to follow through. Who knows, they still could show up.

I'm sorry to hear that it hasn't worked out for some (at least at this point). She did tell me to tell others about the deal but maybe the deal was too good to be true.
