What is the difference in the LG OLED patterns compared to the patterns in the ChromaPure sections? I generally use the ChormaPure software to calibrate my OLED. Is it best to use the LG or the ChromaPure patterns?

I posted this on the LightSpace thread, but thought I should add it here as well...

I ran a compare with LS Connect patterns and those on the Masciola HDR-10 test disc, with the Amazon firestick connected to input A on the HDfury Linker and the Oppo 205 UHD player plugged into input B.

For HDR peak brightness (255, 255, 255) I get two different readings.

The LS Connect pattern (via the firestick) shows reading of 561 Nits. The same 100% white pattern on the Masciola disc gives a value of 603 Nits.

I'm running the firestick in upscale mode and the Oppo in Pass-Thru mode, so outputs are the same.

Any idea why there's 40 Nits difference?

Edit: the display shows 4K, 60 Hz, HDR10 with both sources, and I'm using 10% windows

Thanks Ryan!

I received my disk on Monday and just tried it out today. All patterns work well and will do the calibration hopefully this weekend. Equipment: Sony XBR75 X940D and OPPO UDP-203. Using a X-Rite i1 Display Pro.

I also received earlier the BD that I had also ordered version to calibrate regular BD players in home (and family/friends).

Thanks a lot for all your work and effort!

How do you get HDR from the firetv stick? AFAIK you can't so that would be the difference.

For that matter, the firetv stick can't display UHD. Unless you have a beta version of the unreleased new firetv stick, you are comparing 4K HDR with HD SDR.

the firestick is connected to HDfury Linker device, which upscales to 4K and HDR.

Can the disc be used to caliberate SDR profiles on a 4k tv? or the disc only enables HDR caliberation?

At present, the Linker is outputting YCbCr, but after reading the LightSpace Connection thread, I think it's just a setting in LightSpace that I've overlooked and it's resulting in the pattern clipping above 235.

I hope to hear from LS on this tomorrow. Thanks.

AFAIK, LightSpace doesn't generate metadata at all. It relies on whatever you're using as a pattern generator to do that.

Hi jayraysaiz,

The intended purpose of the LG OLED code specific patterns was to align with LG's grayscale methodology implemented within their panels when HDR is enabled. Unlike standard traditional grayscale sweeps 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%...and so on, LG uses a 10-bit code specific method found HERE. However, LG did not implement this very well and the patterns don't always align with the corresponding adjustment. Thanks!

Hi Pres2play,

I'm not quite sure what is causing the difference in readings. All of the 100% stimulus grayscale patches within my pattern suite are true 10-bit 940|940|940 (235|235|235 8-bit) within the limited range for video. Here is a list of spec's and metadata for my patterns:

Format: HEVC
Format/Info: High Efficiency Video Coding
Format profile: Main 10@L5.1@High
Width: 3840 pixels
Height: 2160 pixels
Display aspect ratio: 16:9
Frame rate: 23.976 (24000/1001) FPS
Color space: YUV
Chroma subsampling: 4:2:0 (Type 2)
Bit depth: 10 bits
Color range: Limited
Color primaries: BT.2020
Transfer characteristics: SMPTE ST 2084
Matrix coefficients: BT.2020 non-constant
Mastering display color primaries: R: x=0.680000 y=0.320000, G: x=0.265000 y=0.690000, B: x=0.150000 y=0.060000, White point: x=0.312700 y=0.329000

Maximum Content Light Level: 1000 cd/m2
Maximum Frame-Average Light Level: 400 cd/m2

Just as a point of reference, here was the measured difference between my disc and the AccuPel 6000 on a 50% stimulus patch:

I don't understand why you would expect an upscaled 1080p non SDR image to be comparable to a UHD HDR pattern displayed through the Oppo?

Thank you Ryan for the generous information.

I measured both 10% windows using masking tape and found the patterns on the disc are larger (horizontally) than the LS patterns. To match the Nits reading I have to increase LS pattern size to 11%.

This is correct! My 10% patches technically measure 11.11% in size. Thanks!

Now I just need calibration tools, haha, just too intimidating...

Hi Ryan. I have a question. If Maximum Content Light Level of your disc and digital download files is 1000 cd/m2 how does that effect the test patterns above that (code 721-940)?

Hi Frank,

I'm not sure I quite understand your question completely. However, my near black patterns triplets are shown below. Regarding reference black (64/64/64), this pattern will not display a label and the screen should be completely black when displayed. Thanks!

Hi northrob,

Everything above 75.2%/1,000 nit should clip. Meaning you should be able to read your display's peak luminance from code based pattern 721(75%) through 940(100%) and attain the same measurement/result. However, please note, not all displays can reach 1,000 nit...like OLED, so in this case, 1,000 nit data will still display on the screen, even though the physical light output is lower. Thanks!

Pardon my ignorance on much of this... I'm fairly new to the calibration world. Particularly UHD HDR. Can these patterns be used by a layman like myself to adjust settings and calibrate, or does it require special equipment, etc.? Trying to find best settings for Digital Cinema HDR on my Epson 5040 and looking for avenues to achieve that on my own since I cannot currently afford ISF calibration.

You will at least need a colorimeter along with this pattern suite to get started as long as you already have a computer/laptop to load the software. There are some free calibration programs you can download that have limited or basic functionality.

Alas, the Colorimeter takes it out of my affordable price range at the moment. Other suggestions on how I may do some HDR calibration on my 5040 in the meantime?

i1display Pro is about $239. (Get the 2017 version - it's faster in the Black Regions.) Have a friend in Canada? Get them to buy it, since it will be cheaper when paid with US $s. Postage may be an added factor. Customs - it's a gift.

I don't think you can eye ball calibrate HDR!
