I know that. My point was that they probably wouldn't have produced new profiles if a built-in profile - and the OEM version has these as well - was accurate enough.

Great find, sir! I spent months looking for a way to disable the dimming until I finally gave up and settled on the Smart LED low setting instead. I've kind of gotten used to the (semi-)local dimming and even learned to like the seemingly better black levels, but still I'd prefer a constant backlight. Also, Smart LED seems to sometimes cause white clipping in dark scenes and some instability in white balance.

Before I venture into the scary territory of the service menu, I have a few questions. I hope you or anyone else can answer them.

- Does changing this setting affect HDR? In other words, since Smart LED is pretty much obligatory for HDR to show properly, does the backlight still dim (locally) in dark scenes when Smart LED is on? How about in SDR?

- Did you try notadrummer's method of setting PWM MID and PWM LOW to 30 instead of changing PWM_MOVIE_INI? Does that work OK?

- Do firmware updates revert these settings back to default?

Thanks a lot. As long as the HDR thing is not an issue I'll change these settings as I'm sure it'll be worth it.

Good news guys, we are adding Direct serial control and SDR autoCAL for 2016 Samsung SUHD models to CalMAN. We will be releasing a beta in the next day or two in our forums. You will need a usb serial adapter and rs232 to 3.5mm cable to plug into the TV (ex-link port).

Whoa! So this will mean, we plug it in, and it's automagically calibrated? Or it's like sitting in the house with you?

I thought it was only for models with a prehistoric serial port on the One Connect Box, according to imagic's thread. ? Please could you support an Ethernet connection as well?

PS I was initially very excited to read it, and thankyou for adding it. But then gutted to find it's not for my 2016 KS model. I hope it can be added for all 2016 KS models?

[edit: all is ok - see answers further down!]

Hmmm. Why wouldn't it be for your model? Does it not have an ex-link port in the back of the TV?

Sadly, Ethernet access to the TV's internal controls is entirely up to Samsung, not SpectraCal. The Sharp model referenced in your posts in another thread had that built in already as evidenced by the TV's menus shown in that YouTube video.

Your KS model has the Ex-link port on the TV itself most likely. The one we have here is the KS9000, but I have tested it on a friends KS8000.

See the post I linked to. It was information from imagic, that it had to have a serial port (not USB) on the One Connect Box.

Oh yes, I understand that. I was making the point that, why would Samsung implement something that's only useable on half of their range (if they didn't all have the port), instead of something available on ALL of their range (Ethernet). I know full well it would need Samsung's co-operation.

Excellent! thanks! Panic over. I have a European KS7000, equivalent to USA KS8000. I have it mounted on the wall, so I can't check the back of it, but it should be present. I hope

I actually have one of those ex-link-to serial cables in your picture that I used to use with my series1 TiVo before I had a network card for it

all you should need is a 3.5mm dual tipped to Serial and then a serial to USB adapter. I know my KS8000 have it.

Wish there is a way to do AutoCAl with the 2016/2017 LG OLED too!

Yes, and the software. And a meter. And a signal generator (for some reason test patterns from a disc/usb aren't any good?).

Tyler,

Fantastic, thank you for adding this!

Will this allow me to use my Lumagen as the signal generator?

Should work fine. Make sure you have the “reference patterns” in CalMAN checked on the source tab so the lumagen patterns are bypassing the lumagen internal LUTs.

Oh, yes, patterns from a disc are just fine. CalMAN works with numerous calibration discs. They do have to be the correct ones, but they work in manual mode (you select the proper patterns then the software and meter read them and make the corrections in the TV automatically).

can we use direct 3.5mm to Serial USB (UART) cables ... like this

https://www.amazon.com/Green-utech-P...+to+serial+usb

instead of getting a Serial to USB adapter.

I'm thinking that any issue regarding this would be centered around drivers: is the driver you need for this the one in the CalMAN driver pack, or if not, will the necessary driver work with CalMAN? If the answer(s) would be yes, then it's a neat solution. Personally, I already have a working USB to UART adapter for use with CalMAN and my Radiance processors so don't need this.

OK. I just checked Prolific's website. It is the same driver as my adapter uses, and I know for a fact that it works with CalMAN. However, the cable is only 6' long, which means your computer would have to be pretty close to the display in order to reach the jack in the back of the TV itself (it's not on the OCB). Plus, it's coming direct from China, which means a shipping time of 10-14 days according to Amazon's website.

Only USE FTDI based usb serial adapters. The prolific ones are buggy and very much not recommended.

Honestly, I haven't had any issues with either of the two Prolific-based adapters I've used (the first's chipset went end-of-life and is no longer supported by Windows). But, I now have an FTDI-based adapter on order.

Do i need tomupgrade anything?

Hey guys, i was able to get the 65KS8000 as a replacement TV from squaretrade. Love the picture quality. This is replacing my 60ES8000.

I have a denon 2313cl with 4k passthru connected to definitive speakers, an Oppo 103 BRP and a Roku ultra. Im using hi-speed HDMI cables i just purchased from amazon.

My denon outputs to my ks80000, my roku goes directly to the ks8000, my oppo is connected to my denon.

Do I need to upgrade any of my equipment? I dont buy discs any longer so no need for a 4k player. The oppo can output 4k, but not sure if this is true 4k? Since i use the oppo to access my plex media in order to get the true HD audio and true DTS.
