2017 HDTVtest TV Shootout | Sunday 13th August in London UK

2017 HDTVtest TV Shootout | Sunday 13th August in London UK

SHOOTOUT RESULTS:

HDTVtest in conjunction with British independent AV retailer Crampton & Moore will be holding its annual TV showdown event in collaboration with HDTVTest on Sunday the 13th of August in Greater London. The five televisions that will be showcased in this public side-by-side comparison are:

• LG B7 (OLED65B7V) OLED TV;
• Panasonic EZ952 (TX-65EZ952B) OLED TV;
• Samsung Q9 (QE65Q9F) QLED TV;
• Sony A1 (KD-65A1) OLED TV; and
• Sony ZD9 (KD-65ZD9) LED LCD TV.

Note: We are also trying to secure a Sony professional broadcast monitor to be used at the event for reference purposes.

All five TVs are 65-inchers to ensure the same screen size for a fair comparison. Although all are HDR-capable, only the LG B7 will feature Dolby Vision (DV) support… we don’t expect the Sony A1 (also marketed as the Bravia A1E in the USA) and ZD9 (US model Z9D) to receive the necessary firmware update to support DV until after the shootout event.

The inclusion of ZD9 (thus making it two Sony Bravias at the event) may raise some eyebrows, though there’s a valid explanation. Despite being a 2016 model (and missing out on last year’s shootout event due to its late launch), the Bravia ZD9 is carried through as the Japanese brand’s flagship LED LCD television for 2017 alongside the A1 OLED.

To ensure fair play, all five TVs will be retail sets which will be given adequate time to run in. Prior to the public comparison event, the TVs will all be calibrated to the common standards used within the film and broadcast industry, as far as permitted by the in-TV controls for both SDR (standard dynamic range) and HDR (high dynamic range). A professional 4K distribution amplifier with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 compliance will be used to send identical video outputs to all the televisions, showing the following real-world material (subject to change within the alloted time) in addition to select test patterns:

• Pristine SDR content (1080p Blu-ray);
• Compressed SDR content (recorded terrestrial broadcast);
• 4K HDR Blu-rays (dark, average-APL and bright scenes; 1000-nit & 4000-nit titles; Dolby Vision vs HDR10);
• Fast-action sports such as football (recorded terrestrial broadcast); and
• 1080p and 4K HDR games from PS4 Pro.

Attendees will then be asked to rank the TVs (allowing for ties) from best to worst in the following categories (subject to change within allotted time):

• Contrast performance;
• Colour accuracy;
• Motion;
• Video processing;
• Uniformity;
• HDR;
• Bright-room performance; and
• Gaming.

Acknowledging no single TV performs best for all types of usage, different awards will be handed out (based on attendees’ votes in the relevant categories) for:

• Best Home Theatre TV (for watching movies in a darkened room);
• Best Living Room TV (for watching mixed/ sports content in a non-light-controlled room);
• Best Gaming TV; and
• Best HDR TV.

And the TV which receives the highest score across all categories will be crowned the “Best TV of 2017″.

The UK 2017 TV shootout event will take place on Sunday August 13th from 10.30am to 3.30pm BST (British Summer Time) at Harefield Academy, Uxbridge, UB9 6ET, United Kingdom.

Attendance is free, but registration is required and limited to the first 50 people (due to space constraints) on a first-come first-served basis. To register, please fill in the form below so that you can be issued with an email confirmation for entry on the day.

Maybe this is a good opportunity to compare the different tv's white point,if all is calibrated to D65 x=0.3127 y=0.3290 then compare them.

This was done at the shootout in NYC. Metamerism is alive and well.

It will be interesting to see if LG sends engineers, etc. to the event as they did in NYC, and if the other manufacturers send representatives also to give their TVs the best shot of looking their best. Some think this helped LG win in New York, so interesting to see how manufacturers respond, and how it affects results.

It would be interessting to know how the "public" thinks/see/feels if they are going to let 50 people do a questionary,i think one point of the questionary would be which one has the "best" white.

Im using your wp on my B6 and it works very well with one notch up on red 2-point high

On the subject of white points and proper matching calibration settings... D-Nice were the TVs at the NYC shootout calibrated for 0-255 or 16-235?

If there are as many Gollum or vampire reviewers at the NY shootout, then the result will be the same This one should be far more interesting, with 50 regular people doing full rankings.

I don't see 50 regular blokes attending this event, rather 50 television enthusiasts who yes are probably more inclined to put more emphasis on optimum viewing conditions.

Yes that's about as regular as I would expect. Not regular-regular, like a granny or some dude who doesn't own a tv.

Vincent sources his TVs from vendors such as the one sponsoring the event... I think he does so because he's found the TV manufacturers reluctant to provide TVs and/or support his reviews and events like this because of his impartiality and honesty, where he will simply call a spade a spade, where TV manufacturers seem to prefer reviews to be all sugar-coated... So I could be wrong but I don't think it's likely TV manufacturers will be sending representatives along... But we shall see

Hopefully it's the same team or person calibrating all the TV's, so no variation in the calibration across all the TV's. The same person that calibrates the Sony reference monitor that all the other TV's get graded against should work with the other sets to be fair. This is not an insult to any of the calibrators skills, but no calibrator is the same on how they see an calibration. Same person or team effort.

Excellent points... And don't worry, I will be sure to take a photo of the calibrators / calibration team... That way everyone can hunt down and destroy those responsible for not awarding/crowning their own TV as the winner... oops sorry, I meant to say congratulate them all for giving up their valuable time on a Saturday and Sunday, and doing a splendid job, with one even flying trans-Atlantic to do so!

John, when you say "custom white point" are you referring to calibrating for D65 and then subsequently applying the Judd Voss offset (X - 0.006 / Y - 0.011) to the OLED TV to add blue so as to offset the possible yellow tint, or something else?

The Judd Voss offset will not work on RBGW OLEDs.
It is for RGB only (professional FSI/Sony for example), and even then is not accurate.

Something else. The reference monitor being a RGB OLED will probably be calibrated with the Judd offset. I was talking about using an alternate WP on the LG and Sony OLEDs so they match the reference monitor. There is a whole thread on this.
Does anyone have an alternate white point for 2016 LG OLEDs?

Thank you Steve & John, makes sense and very useful information! 👍👍

How were the OLED TVs with respect to the NYC shootout calibrated? Were they calibrated to D65 or an alternate WP? The reports seemed to indicate pretty much an exact match between the LG OLED and the reference monitor, so I am guessing whoever calibrated the LG did so using an alternate WP? Is that correct?

The Philips OLED TV is not included In the Shootout. They had their own little OLED vs. QLED Shootout a few days ago in the UK. Coincidence?
