All necessary ports are opened, file-sharing is enabled yet.....

I go to "Test Media Connection" on my 360 and...

Network Adapter: Wired
IP Address: Confirmed
PC Selected: Failed

I've done countless Google searches and found other people with the same exact problem. When I followed the advice of the people who tried to help them, nothing worked.

I have Windows XP SP2 and a Linksys BEFSR41 router. I know it's not the router causing the problem because I've bypassed the router and it still doesn't work.

I'm trying to share video, music, pictures through WMP11. Don't bother telling me to download Zune or Orb or Tversity...all of them are useless and do nothing to solve the problem.

Do you have a software firewall? More details please. Also. If you want it to work with your router. I have the same one myself. Log into your router click on security and enable "Filter Multicast".

When you say Zune is "useless" are you saying you installed it and it doesn't work or you simply don't want to install Zune? If the latter, why such animosity?

I had the exact same problem you described and I am running XP SP2 as well. The only difference is I have the Linksys wireless router. I couldn't get the media library in WM11 to share either.

Anyway, I installed Zune on my desktop which is hardwired to the router and on my laptop which is connected wirelessly. I opened the Zune software, went into the options menu, checked the Xbox 360 option, shared the appropriate folders on both computers, and bam, it worked!

You may have your reasons for not liking the Zune software but it works. Period.

I don't have anything against Zune. I've tried it multiple times and my 360 still doesn't recognize it's even connected to a computer.

When you do get things working I do suggest you give Tversity a try. I used to run just the xbox media connect program and that was nice and fine for a while to stream my music over, but when you start wanting to stream over video you'll want to check out one of those programs as microsoft solutions only allow you to send over a limited number of formats.

I did this a long time ago before media player 11 and it was a pain. Had to go back to troubleshooting 101. Take everything out of the equation that could cause issue. bypass the router, turn off firewalls completely, disable virus protection, etc... Once everything that could cause issue is gone do your best to get it to work. If you still have problems, then try a buddy who has a 360 to come over in person and possibly help. Then build back up the firewalls and crud. Do each one at a time and test the xbox connection to see which thing is killing the communication.

You already seem frustrated and that is overly simple advice so don't get mad, but working with computers every day I find that 90% of the time it always turns out to be something stupid or simple that has been overlooked.

Good luck. We've all dealt with this frustration at some point because I know it took me a couple days to get everything working the way I wanted.

I recently disabled ALL firewalls on my PC while enabling file sharing and it still didn't work. Does this mean that the problem is most likely with my router???

To set up Windows Media Player 11 on a PC running Windows XP

1. Connect your console to your PC as described above or using one of the connection types described in Connect to Xbox LIVE.
2. Go to the Windows Media Player 11 download page at www.microsoft.com to download the software.

Depending on your region, Windows Media Player 11 may also be available at www.xbox.com/pcsetup.
3. Click Windows Media Player Software (or, if you followed the link for a manual download, choose your operating system and follow the instructions).
4. Run the software setup on your PC and follow the prompts.
5. When setup is complete, Windows Media Player should automatically start. If not, open it.
6. In Windows Media Player, click Library, Media Sharing.
7. Select Share my media, OK. Windows Media Player will search for devices on your network.
8. Click your console, then click Allow. If you want to apply more options, click Settings. When done, click OK.
9. On your Xbox 360 console, in the Media area of the Xbox Dashboard, select Music, Pictures, or Video.
10. If your PC's content is not displayed, press X and select your PC.

Been awhile but had to enable something in WMP11 and turnoff zone alarm. Pretty much what the xbox site says to do. But I've noticed somehow settings change and have to go back in. Haven't used it in some time as play direct from computer mostly.

If I remember, I had to add pertinent files to the library, like my divx files.

It says "Computer" but when I click on it, it says I have to test my network connection. During my network connection it says "PC Selected: Failed". I can't get any further than that.

Even with my firewalls disabled (Windows and ZoneAlarm), all are ports opened, file-sharing is enabled and the results are still the same.

Does this mean that my router is the culprit???

I had a helleva time with this too. Using WMP11 does everything play on that ok? Check if you can get pictures from pc to xbox If WMP11 crashes you may needs some DR Watson registry fix. Frankly I gave up on it and play direct from computer to display. When I want marketplace content I turn on the box.

For those of you still having problems, read Dan's post again. These are MOST important when trying to get the 360 to connect to any PC.

Be sure to set the Media Sharing in MP11. You'll see an Xbox 360 icon with a green checkmark in the Media Sharing connections window when done correctly.

Did you manually add to the WMP11 playlist? Can you get at least pictures. Most of the time I can only get photos

open wmp11, library is upper center, click, drops down, add to library. From there it's what you have in your system. And if it's compatible as certain file types don't work. Like I said earlier, I gave this up for direct pc playback-much simpler.

Or, as Davin stated, in the Library select "Apply Media Information Changes" which will add everything to your library at once (EDIT: for media files).

Question: Are your files in a Windows default shared folder like "My Videos"? If not then you have to share that specific folder so it will be seen on the network by the 360.

I just tried this and, while it says that the files were added to my library, nothing shows up on my 360.

I had the same problem as you 2 years ago. I had the free version of Zone Alarm firewall and Tversity and I couldn't get sharing to work. I went into Zone Alarms and made sure that Tversity and Windows Media Player were selected as "Trusted" servers. Some times the 360 wouldn't find the computer at all but that stopped once I bought Zone Alarm (you can actually tell the pay version to keep the port open because it actually allows you to see the port) and that helped me.

I have Vista home premium edition and I can't get my PC to work with my 360 (or PS3) for nothing! I have tried Media Extender and Tversity and nothing seems to work. I have done everything from port forwarding to static addressing everything thing to allowing in firewall and nothing. I've been losing my mind all weekend long trying to do this.
