So my question is this: Is there anyway to use a standard "off the shelf" dvd drive as a replacement? I am willing to go as far as a "softmod" for now but I really want to spend as little $$ as possible (remember it only cost me $30 to begin with).
Thank for the help.
You can replace it with an xbox-specific drive, usually on ebay.....Thompsons are the cheap and unreliable ones that everyone wants to replace...then come the other manufacturers with Samsung xbox drives the hardest to find, and most reliable.

Samsung and Phillips drives, with Samsung being the better choice for most people, are the names you'd want to go with if you buy an ebay drive. I just got a whole new Xbox for $35 so I don't know it's worth it as those drives cost about that.

Modded the unit last night actually has a Samsung drive in it my friend said the tray is probably slightly misaligned so I may try to manually relign it sometime this week.
