Man, they're teasing us like a 19th century burlesque act. I need some screenies and/or gameplay videos, please. All this talking about graphics is like writing about music which is like dancing about architecture.

^^ haha..they're just pacing themselves, we've still got 10months to go.
I like the random (Radiant) missions in RDR and sounds like they've taken it a step further...good stuff!

Another excellent vid, the theme song is invoking a sad yet epic feel for me.

a bit somber to me.... but this soundtrack is going to be pretty epic, as much as i hate using the word epic as an adjective.

agreed. that was my entry in elder scrolls and I assumed sequels would be tinged with the same alien oddness.

The Dutch Power Unlimited dropped in my mailbox today. Highlights of the 4-page article:

"You can use fast travel to revisit places you have visited earlier."

"Skyrim is approximately as big as Oblivion."

"Five big cities and more than 130 unique dungeons."

"Low-Fantasy" (Meaning the game does not look as vibrant, vivid and weird as Morrowind did, more like Oblivion)

"Dragon stories (rumors of Dragons) are less prominent than all those Oblivion Gates were in Oblivion, which does not give you the feeling that you are doing 'useless' quests when you lay aside the Main Quest."

"Dragons are not rare."

"Dungeons will be locked at their level once you have been there."

"Even in third person, animations look really good. There has been a lot of progress since Oblivion."

"You can read in-game books in 3-D."

"Every item has a 3D-preview in the Flash based inventory, which you can twist, turn, rotate, etc. Sometimes you will solve puzzles by analyzing these 3D-previews. Not only armor and weapons can be explored in great detail, also small rings and herbs can be investigated from all possible angles. Every single item in the game can be previewed in the inventory screen." "

"The Dark Brotherhood is back."

"Active blocking."

"More traps and puzzles."

"Main Story is approximately 20 hours."

Was hoping for slighly bigger map than Oblivion, but oh well.

20hrs of main story is about inline with other RPGs, was hoping for more as well..

This sounds awesome!

Quote:

One of the more alluring changes to the spellcasting in Skyrim is how you can employ spells in different ways. For instance, you could blast enemies with a flame ball from afar, hold the button down to wield the spell like a flame thrower, place a rune on the ground to create an environmental trap that spontaneously combusts when an enemy steps on it, or equip the spell with both hands to deliver high damage fireball attacks that drain your magicka reserves quickly. The shock and frost spells give players an equal amount of flexibility.

The Havok Behavior technology gives the spells more visual flair than we've seen in past Elder Scrolls games as well. If you cast a frost spell, you'll see the effects on the enemy's skin. If you're wielding the flame spell like a flame thrower, the environment will catch fire for a short while and burn anything that comes into contact with it.

Also excited about the balance idea in combat and the limited arrows! Wow, this game is sounding great!

The guy who created the bow/arrow mod for Oblivion commented on Skyrim's adoption of his work:

Quote:

I was having a pitiful birthday today, I am sick (had to cancel my weekend party with friends the day before) and I am at work (I had to for a mandatory HOT job) . Then at my lunchtime I read about how Bethesda will be adapting some of my archery game mechanics for Skyrim.

wow....years of consuming all my free time (and not so free time) that I could have been using to actually play instead of modding. Loss sleep, loss money in some cases like buying sound effects or a drawing tablet, secondary monitor (things I would not buy if I was not modding) or because I did not "clock in" for my on-line business, struggling with programming language that is out of my comfort zone, feeling like a dim wit asking dumb questions/pestering those with real technical and artistic skill. Using my holidays and vacation time to learn how to use modding tools, hundreds and hundreds of hours of tedious trial and error.... ALL TOTALLY WORTH IT!

I was not going to do this as I wanted to see what my media options would be first, but now I am a pre-order customer for this game.

Best Birthday Ever!

this thread has made me want to try a new oblivion-esque game while I wait. I have found risen and arcania IV. would anyone recommend either (or an alternative)?

This reccommendation may seem a bit odd, but I will throw out Red Dead Redemption. I know, it's not a fantasy game. But to me, it's the best open world game to hit the console since Oblivion and completely worth your time. Also, the undead DLC is on sale today:

agreed with the red dead redemption comments.

but if you're looking for fantasy, dragon age origins (ultimate) is a great time, and i've heard sacred 2 is a good time as well.

Glad to hear this. Sometimes I drop in and see that no one has even commented on something as awesome as the combat improvement article and wonder if I'm wasting my time. Glad to know you're enjoying the updates.

I am way too excited for a game I can't play for many months. This is going to be a brutally painful wait. May have to pull a Cartman and freeze myself until release day!

I would think this thread will pick up some speed once major game sites start posting info. It is still kind of "off the radar" for a lot of gamers. I have been waiting for this game since I finished Oblivion.

I think the lack of response is due to the fact that most of us are just speechless. One thing I noticed is that the music in this vid is drastically different from the time-lapse art vid, even sense some Oblivion feel to it 3/4 qrt way thru...
