It's nonsense like this why I could never get into zombies. They simply don't explain what's going on. What all these tonics do, how the game works, whats the deal with the power being off, what the hell is a pack a punch etc. Then they start adding unique stuff to each map like the director, which only compounds the confusion.
I remember playing the moon map at cod XP with an equally inexperienced friend, and we'd get instantly destroyed by a horde. We eventually figured out something with a teleporter, only to rather quickly choke to death. We got up to leave, and one of the guys explained we needed to grab the spacesuits. How the hell am I supposed to know that? There's no indication towards it, there's never been this mechanic in a cod game before. Same with the director....
So don't feel bad you're confused. The whole design is confusing. You have to have a pretty high tolerance for trial and error and long stretches of monotony before you can enjoy zombie mode anyway.
At least MW3s survival mode had various difficulties so the first five minutes didn't put you directly to sleep. But L4Ds survival mode did it exactly right - the fun part is when you're overwhelmed. Why do we need this agonizingly slow run up to a reasonable difficulty? Just throw us into the fire, at let us do it over and over.
