Now that the new xbox 360 I got for my son has a 250gb hard drive, I would like him to start copying the purchased game discs to the xbox 360's hard drive. I've read that this saves wear and tear on the disc drive, loads games faster, and most importantly reduces the risk of damaging the $60 game discs. I assume this is legal since I've purchased the discs, but I have absolutely no idea how to do it.

Insert the disc. When you see the game on the dashboard menu, instead of hitting 'A' to play game, press 'Y' to see game details. One of them will be 'Install to Hard Drive'.

Note: Disc must still be in the tray to play it off your hard drive.

Thanks.

If you don't mind another dumb question...after a game is installed on the hard drive, when you want to play it in the future, after inserting the disc into the console, does it automatically default to playing the game from the hard drive instead of from the disc or do you have to select that option?

It should automatically play from the harddrive.

Consider the unparalleled advantage, of a natural disaster that's impossible to manage.

Faster load times. Game performance/experience may improve depending on the game as well if played from the HD.

Another question...I currently play the disc, and save my progress. If I copy the game to the HDD, and say at some later date, for lack of space, delete certain games, will my progress in these games be deleted as well?

Nope. Game saves are separate files from the install.

Yeah, installing games is worry free. If for some reason you need to delete the installed game, nothing else will be affected.

Note: A few games actually play WORSE when you install it on the hard drive, though nowadays it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks guys. Will try it when I get mine back. Hopefully it's fixed, and won't cause me any more grief.

Same games (Bad Company 2) you get quite the advantage for having installed the game.

Salminella has become legend (or something like that): PSN

Halo 3 is the biggest known one, if you follow the link I posted it shows a list of most game and if it improves or hurts load times.
