I was about to go get the Turtle Beach XP400 tonight, but it seems there is a lot of discontent among these boards about them...

I hadnt even heard of the warheads until today .... But I hear such mixed things about the XP400 many good things as well as bad..

Am I truly better off waiting? I have the PX21 right now and want to upgrade to wireless.

Order them from Amazon. I believe they have a 21 day full satisfaction return policy.

Or Best Buy would work too. Either way you get to make your own decision.

That would be very helpful. I don't think anyone's gonna want to go through 150+ pages :P

Yeah, but I don't see it happening. Last time, I told them to check my IP, and even check the link out on Head-fi with the sig specifically mentioning who I was here, and they STILL didn't do a damn thing.

well Daekwan, you better hope Microsoft uses the same 'security' for the 720, because by the time the Warheads are released, they'll probably be next to useless considering the 360 is running on fumes at this point...

actually the 360 is doing better than ever, and obliterating the competition... they're making money on every sale and rolling in dough, probably no motivation for a new console at this time.

There's no reason to think their proprietary signal would change in regards to headsets, controller's, etc.

In fact, there is new Licensed Halo 4 Gaming Headset range announced by Mad Catz for next holyday 2012, so I guess these will be a "halo-painted" version of the Warheads, Devastators, Detonators & Prime... No sense to be released so close in time so I do not bet for a new delay.

I wish to be wrong, but there is one big reason for make them not compatible with future console: $$$

I disagree.  The original Xbox controllers and headsets were not compatible with the 360.  Given changes like smartglass and other improvements MSFT is envisioning, it stands to reason that existing 360 controllers will not be compatible with the next generation console.  Now that I think about it, I can't think of a single console that has ever been released where the controllers from the previous generation were compatible.

My take is that anyone looking to buy the Warheads should be prepared to use them solely on the 360, and not expect them to work on the next gen console.  Of course I may be wrong and the whole reason Tritton has delayed the Warhead's release is that they are working with MSFT to future-proof them.  I just don't see that being the case.

Controllers were never really compatible with next generation, because they were wired. But if you are looking for example, I'm pretty sure the PS2 could use the controllers from the PS1. Dual Shock ring a bell?

Being that this generation is the first to use OEM wireless controllers. Why go and piss off millions & millions of loyal customers, buy forcing them to buy brand new controllers when the 720 could easily inherit the wireless system from the 360. Its not like MS needs to reinvent the wheel here. Its wireless, so we are talking about a chip and radio frequency.

A great example is a wireless router. Most wireless routers have some form of backwards compatibility. A newer N-wifi router can usually support A/B/G standards from past. Bluetooth is another great example. Bluetooth is completely backwards compatible, my newest Bluetooth 4.0 Apple stuff works with all of my older Bluetooth hardware. Do I even need bring up cellphones.. 3G phones work on older 2G networks. 4G works on older 3G. I could on and on with examples of backwards compatiblity in the wireless world. MS would have to try pretty hard NOT to support the 360 wireless devices, on the new 720. I seriously doubt they will go that route.

Turtle Beach X42's. So far they are better than the X41's. Only problem is that I can barely hear myself through the speakers when I talk. I don't really know how loud I am talking. Is there a way to get more of "my" voice through the speakers? I have tried everything!

Good point on the dual shock.  This is quite unusual behavior for Sony.  However, an important caveat here is that the dual shock controller was released after the PS2 was announced, so Sony probably felt compelled to make it compatible with both the PS2 and PS.

I maintain that if I were buying a third-party accessory like the warheads, I would not expect them to be compatible with a console that has not even been announced yet.  It seems a bit optimistic to me.

Who knows, MSFT may support some form of bluetooth audio in its next console, in an attempt to adopt a more standards-friendly approach.  Interestingly in that case, the current xbox 360 wireless headset would be compatible (since it doubles as a bluetooth headset) whereas the Tritton Warheads would not since it relies on the proprietary wireless signal.

Fockit. I'm going to order XP400's today.. so they get here by Friday. And I can use them this weekend.

1) Im tired of the wires. Beyond. Tired.

2) I've recently moved, and now Im playing MW3 more often than not at my girlfriends house. Which means I have to use the OEM dollar store MS headset that comes in the box.. because that's the only headset I have at her house.. It doesnt fit, it sounds horrible, people cant hear me as well and of course my GF starts bytching if I turn up the TV sound too loud. Exact same reasons why I bought my A40/Mixamp combo in the first place!

3) They are only $193 on Amazon with free shipping for Prime members. The only other thing I would consider right now is the A50's or the Warheads. Both expected to be $300.. and neither of which are available.

4) Amazon had a 21 day return policy on the last headphones I bought from them. If their return policy is anything even close to that.. its plenty of time to use the cheapee XP400's and figure out if they are truly worth $200 bucks or not. It also gives me a 3 week buffer to hope & that the A50's or Warheads start shipping within in that.

5) If hell freezes over. And I end up liking the XP400's enough. I can buy another set for my home system, to replace the my supposedly-wireless-but-really-wired A40/Mixamp5.8 solution. With the high resale of Astro products on Ebay and other places.. it should still be worth enough to cover the price of the XP400's that would be replacing them.

6) If the situation in point #5 did occur. The bluetooth feature on the XP400's would come in incredibly helpful for those times when my GF just has to talk to me on the phone.. and I'd rather be playing some COD. Which is pretty much everytime I choose to play some COD.

7) I know all of you guys could care less about my decision making process. But I just felt like writing it out, before pulling the trigger. Gives me a chance to weigh the pros & cons.. and might help some other oddball individual to make up his mind.

Daekwon, correct me if I'm wrong but the A50's come out in July from what I gather so you might have a better chance at them versus the Warheads with its' ever-changing release date.

My PX21's finally caved under the pressure of so much super-glue & duct tape and after a month of the OEM mic I ran to Wally World & bought a set of Tritton Detonators to hold me off but that only lasted 2 days before returning them. I have never had a headset that "creaked" so much in my ears from the plastic cups rubbing against the connection joint. If I smile, talk, nod or make any facial movement... "CREAK"!

Not as keen on the Warheads if they use the same plastic & similar build, will obsess on the A50's now wink.gif

I never really notice that when I had them. Sounds like something that could get worn in anyway.

Daekwan, you might really like the XP400s. They're super light and comfortable compared to the trittons. I remember you saying you didn't think headphones for gaming needed to sound great, so that part might not bother you.

Yeah I gotta say. The Tritton AX360's were the first gaming headset I tried.. and I was also able to use the AX720's that a friend purchased. Neither impressed me enough to keep using them.

Between that and the delays.. the Warheads are just a wet dream. I'll probably end up with a Ferrari SUV.. before I end up with the Warheads.

That said you make a great point. If the A50's are supposed to come out in July. I can give it another week with the dollar store OEMs that came in the 360 box. Astro sound & build quality has never disappointed me, but that freaking single wire that needs to go from the A50 headset to the controller just kills any excitement I have about the headset. You would think Astro would sell their soul to MS, to get access to that proprietary wireless signal they use.

I've never understood the studio/reference quality need for a gaming headset. Mainly because I use mine for gaming and thats it. If I can hear the guy sneaking up the steps to stab me in the back, while Im zoomed in about to snipe this guy.. then thats pretty much all I need & want from a gaming headset. If it reproduces the sounds I need to hear to keep from getting ninja'd in COD. Then I'm a happy camper.

I do understand many of guys use yours for movies, music, edting, operas, symphonies. Other people have needs for this high quality sound reproduction is completely understandable. So knock yourself out. I just have nightmares about the TBX4's I tried back in the day. My god did they suck in every category imaginable!!

I do understand many of guys use yours for movies, music, edting, operas, symphonies. Other people have needs for this high quality sound reproduction is completely understandable. So knock yourself out. I just have nightmares about the TBX4's I tried back in the day. My god did they suck in every category imaginable!!

Its not a need, its a desire to just get the best possible experience. If a game is trying to immerse you in a different world, it certainly helps if the sound is a convincing replica of reality. And most games have symphonic scores nowadays anyway. If I was satisfied with merely passable, I probably wouldn't be on AVS. tongue.gif

Practical concerns like not being choked by wires will always triumph, but I at least require a basic level of quality which I didn't feel the XP400s had. Not for their price.

The XP400s are definitely functional, dare I even say exceptional if your only...and I mean ONLY concern is pinpointing sounds around you. The phones are pretty clear even if they sound tinny, and the DSS positioning is very good, even if it reduces clarity. Be sure to tweak the virtual speaker positioning to one that sounds good to your ears. Go find a really clear sound source in game and spin around - one should sound more convincing than the rest.
