Is there any way to block Netflix on Xbox Live?

I want to get my 14-year old son an Xbox Live subscription for Christmas, but I am concerned about him watching some of the content on Netflix without supervision. There are some pretty risque titles available. Is there any way to block Netflix from being watched on the Xbox? If not, is there an easy way to block objectionable content on Watch it Now?

My wife and I don't want to be limited, but we would prefer that the kids only get access to PG-13 titles.

Don't want any drama...just an education. Recently found out our 14 yr old son is using his Xbox Live to access porn on Netflix. We had NO clue considering "we" have never purchased or even used Netflix in our home. Since we are unfamiliar with how Netflix works at all, we are unfamiliar about how you set up or even use the service. A friend told us that one of his friends must have given our son their User/Password information that has given him the access. We are realistic about the "urges" of a teenage boy but feel it is inappropriate behavior regardless. We may not be able to stop him from seeking or finding this kind of material, but we sure aren't going to accept it or make it easy for him to access. At this time, we can't divulge "how" we find out so it is impossible for us to simply confront him and demand to know who gave him the access. Here are my questions: 1) Is it possible to use someone else's ID, password, etc? 2) If so, HOW do I block the ability to access Netflix on his XBOX Live completely? We don't have a membership so he has no business using Netflix at all. Appreciate any technical advice!

Yes, you can use someone else's Netflix account on your Xbox. A Netflix account allows access on multiple devices up to a limit. The names or information don't have to match up.

If your son's Xbox Live account is not used by anyone else, you can use the parental controls:

http://support.xbox.com/en-US/billin...rental-control

What can I control?
  • Ratings and Content: These settings let you restrict games and video content based on the content's rating. You can also set whether or not unrated or explicit content can be played on this console.

Tip You can set up exceptions for individual games that are outside of the rating restrictions you have set.
  • Family Timer: This setting allows you to limit the time that your console can be used on a daily or weekly basis.
  • Xbox LIVE Access: This setting allows you to decide if your family can connect to Xbox LIVE from this console.
  • Xbox LIVE Membership Creation: This setting allows you to control whether or not new Xbox LIVE memberships can be created from your console.

that's at the Xbox level but to really have control, you have to go to the Netflix level. Do you know the person who gave this account access? It's most likely your son's friend. You're going to have to go to that friend's parents and tell them what's happening so they can lock down the account.

Really though, he's 14. There is nothing on Netflix that a 14 shouldn't be able to watch. Stop sheltering him so much.

I rememebr seeing a Karma Sutra video, full nudity and simulated sex. Not really appropriate, not that you have any business telling people how to parent.

On the PS3 there is a "Netflix Kids" option when Netflix starts, has this made it to any other boxes?

There are lots of those videos on the internets.

You may start an 'arms war' with the child. Perhaps he has also learned about streaming, where a video downloaded to the PC can be watched on the 360. Even a cheap laptop in his room can hold ANY video he downloaded or converted, then the 360 can attach to a server (TVersity, maybe) running on it.

Or a few MP4 videos stored on a USB stick and carefully hidden from Mom and Dad.

If I wanted to prevent all this, I'd threaten to move the 360 into a trash can, then DO it next time there's trouble. However, I was the kid who used to turn the TV antenna at night so Canadian TV stations with naked women and more came in clearer, so what do *I* know?...

hey, just trying to help out. rather than throw your hands up in the air and just open the flood gates, you try to control what you can control and teach within your means.

my friend refuses to let his kid watch TV and play video games. He knows that his kid will see TV and games at some point at other people's places but at least with his house he has control.

A lot of kids don't have smartphones. If i ever have a kid, I'm not going to spoil him with a smartphone. Phones are for contact and emergencies. A kid doesn't need a smartphone. If they want to play games, they can play them on a computer. If he wants to text, he can text with a regular phone. I'm sure not having instant access to a web browser is not going to ruin the kid's life. I survived my childhood without a smartphone. I'm sure he'll find a way to make do.

At least with a computer, you can have very tight controls in place. With firewalls, I can lock down access.

Yes, the determined will find a way. But just because the hardened criminal will steal your car no matter what system you have in place, that doesn't mean you just leave the keys and the engine running.

There's porn on Netflix? Cause if so, that $8/month is an even better deal than I thought it was
. j/k, since Netflix doesn't have porn. Well, I suppose some people's definition of porn is different than mine. There's certainly movies with nudity and adult situations, which is what I'm guessing is being referred to.

I don't really have an answer to the question. I know there's parental controls, but I'm not sure how they interact with Netflix (or if they're just for XBOX content). Maybe look at this stuff:
http://support.xbox.com/en-US/billin...rental-control

EDIT: After some further reading, it looks like the parental controls do work with Netflix. I'd check if my XBOX was available, but my kid is playing with friends on it right now.

wait, what?

parental controls definitely work... problem is getting everything set so that the stuff that should work actually works, and the stuff that shouldn't work doesn't.

be nice if they had the controller passcode thing on a per app basis... like if everyone wanted to share a gamertag and you just wanted to protect your facebook for example.

This just sounds like a parent/child discussion that needs to discuss rules. Regardless how you discovered it, it is now known. Talk with him and if you can get him to talk to you and divulge who has the account and inform their parents of the situation. Discuss what is not allowed and then utilize the available tools. If that fails take the 360 out. If porn is still being accessed without the 360 then lock the settings down on the computer web browsers along with only you having the password to the account. The same thing can be done with the 360 with pass codes and child accounts created and setting put in place.
