Halo 4's graphics, especially the lighting looked very impressive.

The game-play looked really solid too....

Yeah I was blown away by the look of it. Bungie has been holding that series back graphically. That was obvious as soon as we saw what halo 3 looked like....halo 4 looked like a generational leap.

to be fair, halo 3 was the first attempt with new hardware.

Halo Reach is the game to judge Bungie on the 360. but that said, Halo Reach was great looking but it had some problems too. the cutscenes had that bad framerate and motion.

New blood was needed for Halo and maybe 343 Industries was what was needed.

I dunno...most other franchises had a much bigger leap between last gen and this gen in their first outing. Halo 3 looked like Halo 2 rendered in HD. Reach looked somewhat better but graphics was never the strong point of that series...until now. That jungle looked amazing. I know online video covers up a lot of flaws, but this is a huge leap forward.

Really dig the metroid prime influence too.

My thoughts exactly. Halo 3 Vs. Halo 4 look like they are from two different console generations.

Hmm,
I look forward to the new installment, but right now, it looks like Halo meets Bionicle?

Reach was definitely better than Halo 3 in graphics. the nice HDR lighting shining through the canopy or the cloud cover. the better environments.

yeah, Reach wasn't as good as it could be but the lighting and some of the effects were above games like COD (which was restricted in special effects because of the 60 fps mantra).

Interesting, the multiplayer graphics is not nearly as interesting as these campaign mode graphics. I wonder how much they were holding back with the multiplayer...

actually, online videos usually make games look worse as they're video recordings with compression, framerate changes, etc.

with actual gameplay, it's rendered on the fly.

I really hate Youtube because of all the bandwidth restrictions. The free accounts suck because you're at the mercy of the crappy Youtube transcoder which degrades all my videos. Plus, you can't show off 60 fps games because Youtube restricts videos to 30 fps. so it makes your 60 fps games look jerky.

I'd switch to something like Vimeo but Vimeo forbids gameplay videos. Vimeo is less compression heavy than Youtube. But even then, I think Vimeo also caps at 30 fps.

I've always been far more into the single player experience of Halo and I'm really relived to see that 343 appears to be doing a good job in that regard. That jungle level had a real cinematic quality to it, gradually revealing more as you went along. While I've always loved the concept of Halo, I've often felt that Bungie committed some pretty bad gameplay blunders along the way (their chokepoints in nearly every game can be maddening) and even shortchanged the single player experience for the sake of MP at times. I'll be curious to see what 343 does with the franchise and if the final experience lives up to the promise of these early looks.

Now if they can somehow manage to add in a 3D mode.....

you know how excited people are for Halo 4? I checked my friends list (and it's not a major list) and 5 people were playing Halo 3 and 4 people were playing Halo Reach. I asked a couple why and they said they wanted to revisit all the games again before Halo 4 comes out.

I actually booted up Halo Reach to test out my new DSS2 and yeah, I'm definitely going to go through Reach, then Halo Anniversary, then 2, then 3 to prep for Halo 4.

Played reach last night after a long hiatus. I didn't realize how bad the sound was on that game. I have high hopes for Halo 4. I hope they deliver.

Thanks for the re-fresher on why I just don't like the Halo MP game style. All the jumping around annoys me. I have it pre-ordered but I may just cancel and wait until it drops in price or just buy it used. I really just want to play the Single player campaign. Probably not worth paying full price for that.

In my opinion this game looks terrible. I really hate to say it. I absolutely loved playing Halo3 and Halo Reach online in 8v8 multiplayer or 4v4 multiplayer games. Loved them. To me this seems like it departs too far from those. The gunplay in these videos just looks too bizarre. And the jumping around is way too ridiculous. The old games were not even close to that with the jumping. Man I have a bad feeling about this game..

In all honesty I am a little shocked.

I'm not expecting much in the way of maps either. I bet they do not provide a outdoor map that can hold a candle to some of the more natural, earthy maps of the past.

I really don't know what to say. I feel like I lost a friend.frown.gif

Edit- I also just like to say...Halo Reach never got the credit for how good of a game it was. It was a very solid game. Very fast paced. Very intense.

Doubt it seeing that Bungie is no longer apart of Halo.

From their own web site:
Quote:
Lobster Fish 2 Is there something in store this year for us on Bungie Day?

But of course! The advent on which we celebrate our Community carries the same weight around here as a national holiday. This year may not be a hallmark anniversary, and Bungie Day has never been graced with a game reveal, but community greatness must still be recognized. Loyalty cannot go unrewarded.

A few years ago I engaged in a sprited debate on the XBL.com Forum about how XBox was going to make some blockbuster games in the future...probably with their next console. One of the concepts we discussed was actually passed on to me by a MS/XBox employe and friend at the time. Towit...Team XBox planned to merge many aspects of movie making with game making. And was going to use diferent movie making techniques to actually launch new games such as a new story arc for Halo. The idea as expressed to me was to use a 15-90 minute actual film or animation segments to prequel a game. Bundle or sell it with the game and/or XBL.Then finish the story arc in 1-2 grand game sequels. I was roundly booed by a vocal minority in the discussion at the time. They wanted no part of it. Wanted their games "Whole". And loudly proclaimed they wouldn't buy any game released that way. It was a fun discussion, with no conclusion...until now.

Well we are nearing that future and here it is. And surprise...surprise. It's with Halo.

http://www.ingame.msnbc.msn.com/technology/ingame/halo-movie-has-it-till-break-dawn-879479#

I wish XBL Forum was still in its old format, So I could resurrect this discussion in the "My Forums" area. For no other reason than to say
"I told ya so". I personally dislike the new Forum format and rarely use it these days. It's too difficult to navigate. And they washed out all of the game archives. Which rendered it useless to me. It will be interesting to watch how Team XBox integrates this movie with the Halo 4 game. I will definitely buy the edition with it included. But only if it is in glorius HD. Which introduces a whole other debate?! That has already been argued ad nauseum in the "other' fun thread in this Forum area.

I saw that on Waypoint. And I agree with you. It is awesome! I see a blend of 3 ideas in the trailer...Halo...Mass Effect with movie effects instead of dialog choices...Officer and a Gentleman. Definitely a cool way to launch a big, special new game IMO. It would be really neat if Valve also used this approach with the next installment of Half Life.
