For those in the preview it looks like you will still get beta versions of the apps even after the update goes live.

Quote:
As is the case, what's more interesting are the apps that won't be making launch week. YouTube, Verizon FiOS TV, Vevo, UFC, Crackle, and 22 more are all listed under "later in December." Dailymotion is listed here, too, even though it's been working great in our Xbox Live dashboard preview build; Microsoft told us, as part of the beta program, we would continue to have access to some apps not yet released to the general public. That applies to SyFy, too, which is in the current preview build but not on the latest list that Microsoft sent out this evening.

How do they effectively secure your Gamertag if you can login to it from any console? I can't imagine that less tech-savvy gamers are going to want to have to go to the Xbox.com website to manage their authorized consoles.

it's the same as for web browsing on someone else's PC. don't save your password on someone else's 360.

With the FIOS TV app, does anyone know for certain if this will replace the STB and we will have the ability to record on the 360? There seems to be some confusion about this. I would love to get rid of my cable box/DVR and save $15.99/month.

I do not know for certain, but the AT&T Uverse requires you to to have at least one STB in the house. The 360 services as more of an extender for that service. I doubt the Fios app would be different.

I thought I read somewhere its only going to open up like 26 channels or something like that. At least initially.

No recording for FIOS, just streaming channels as is. No DVR functionality like Pause/RW/FF, etc.

XBOX Live: Wagmman
PSN: Wagg
BFBC2: Wagman
Steam: Wag

My Second Life character looks and acts exactly like me except he can fly.

Gotcha. Thanks for the replies. Hopefully, in the future, we will get all the channels, have the ability to record, and get rid of the box.

Well, the Engadget article didn't explain at all how the authentication is actually done. As in, how one authorizes (or de-authorizes) a specific Xbox 360 to be able to sign on using your profile/Gamertag. Microsoft is going to want it to be transparent so that customers only have to do the authorization once, but it would seem that this opens up the potential for a lot of trouble. If you use your profile on another Xbox 360, can you explicitly de-authorize that console when you're done, perhaps from the console itself, or do you have to go back to a web site? Do you have to enter your Microsoft Windows Live ID password via the controller, which is not exactly secure since anyone sitting there can see you selecting each character?

This seems like an invitation for hundreds of thousands of complaints from customers who aren't fully briefed on the details.

I use a chatpad or USB keyboard so no one is seeing any characters. If you don't trust where you're playing, just keep your gamertag on a flash drive.

I'm not 100% of the logistics. I think I remember having to download the profile to each of my 360s once but after that, it's a matter of just logging in via your email/password. I think the new system is for people that have multiple consoles. So you own your consoles and will likely have to switch back and forth so you just type in your login credentials or you save your credentials. For playing at other places, you still have to use the "download gamertag" option or use the gamertag on flash drive option.

someone told me a use of the new dashboard that I never realized. if you have a game that you want to play and don't want to have to go through menus, just use the bing search. or if you want to find info about so and so game...

say I want to play the Lara Croft Guardian of Light game so I would say "xbox" to bring up the voice commands. then say "bing, lara croft". it'll bring up everything lara croft related. Lara Croft Guardian of Light was my first hit among many. I then had to say "xbox" to bring up the voice commands again and then said "guardian of light". then I was at the game page where I could launch the game, browse the DLC, etc.

and the shockingly amazing thing is you can talk really fast. I said, "xbox, lara croft guardian of light" at the main dashboard and it was able to find it directly (rather than simplifying your search by just saying "lara croft"). I didn't talk methodically like I usually do voice commands but rather talked fast like I tend to talk in bursts in real life. it somehow just got it.

I get scared to press the xbox button on my controller when I am gaming. It's so slow and painful to have to accept or send game invites or check and reply to messages. That's the most important update I am looking forward to. Everything else is just extra stuff that most of us gamers never mess with.

the netflix app has gotten a look very similar to the new ESPN app (as in, a long vertical strip of shows).

I missed the clean sharp look of the old Netflix app.

But there is 5.1 audio, subtitles, and more functionality throughout. Will have to find someone to test whether the new Netflix app still supports viewing parties.

..boo. That's a bad time for Europeans, means EVERYONE is going to trying to download at the same time.

Don't know why, but I had a feeling this wouldn't be a smooth rollout. Sucks that it looks like I was right.

Zune is Microsoft so they didn't go out of business. Could have been a number of issues.....network congestion, older version on your Xbox and new version "tag" on LIVE but new version not uploaded yet, etc...

I watched some Zune Movies the other day (I'm in the beta too). The beta required me to download a newer version of Zune Movies.

If you are in the beta there is a whole list of apps that you need to uninstall and re-installed listed on the MS Connect Live Preview page.
