Minecraft in 2017 for Xbox One and Other Platforms: Cross-platform play! Super Duper Graphics! In-game servers!

This E3 we shared our plans to introduce the Better Together Update to unify console, mobile and Windows 10 versions of the game under a single edition. And that’s not all! This swish new version brings in-game multiplayer servers, an update to give your worlds a lick of graphical paint, and cross-platform support - letting console, Win 10 and mobile Minecrafters play together for the first time!

We've put together this handy post, with a summary of what this mean for your Minecraft:

Better Together Update

A game all about teamwork, building together and creating communities shouldn't be restricted to one device, which is why our Better Together Update introduces cross-platform play, breaking down the barriers and letting people play the same complete Minecraft with each other across devices! We've wanted to integrate cross-platform for ages, essentially making a version of Minecraft that's consistent no matter what device you're choosing to play on.

So going forward, the edition you'll find on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, mobile and VR will simply be known as 'Minecraft', a separate entity from 'Minecraft: Java Edition', which is the original PC game (that we'll continue to support, of course). This means when you buy 'Minecraft', you're buying a game that can you can play with friends across devices.

Anyone playing the game on Windows 10, iOS, Android, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and VR devices will be able to play online together. If you own Minecraft for your mobile or VR device, you'll get this as a free update this summer. If you own Minecraft: Xbox One Edition or Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, you’ll receive the brand new version of Minecraft for free, and your existing worlds and DLC will come along to the new version with you. What’s more, any DLC you purchase will be accessible amongst the various devices at no extra charge. (For example: if you buy the Greek Mythology pack on Nintendo Switch, you’ll also own it on the mobile, Xbox One and Windows 10 Editions too - no extra charge).

In-Game Servers

Independent servers, run by members of the amazing Minecraft community, have been around since the earliest days of the game. They're essentially online platforms where you can socialise, play and collaborate with millions of other players! Basically, servers make it easier for you to enjoy multiplayer Minecraft and access new mini-games, worlds, and friends to craft with! Nice!
Unlike Minecraft Realms, which gives you access to a private, cloud-hosted world for you and your friends, servers are open and accessible to everyone - some have monthly users in the millions!

So this Summer, all platforms receiving the Better Together Update will then have a server browser in the Minecraft start menu. This'll let you search a list of servers which you can join right away! We'll be launching with four servers – Lifeboat, Mineplex, InPVP, and CubeCraft - with more to follow. Plus we've made sure that parental controls and other safety features will be in place, so you decide what your child can access. We'll have a more detailed summary of servers closer to the update. After all, we live to serve(er)! ...sorry.

Super Duper Graphics Pack

Finally, this Fall, we'll be releasing a free update that allows you to boost Minecraft's graphics. Minecraft will get 4K HDR graphics which include improved lighting, shadows, water effects... basically, it'll be like giving your eyes a luxury massage. This’ll be available to folks playing on Xbox One, Windows 10, iOS, mobile, and VR - essentially every platform that gets our Better Together update.

We'll also be releasing new DLC, the Super Duper Graphics Pack. On top of the free 4K update, the Super Duper Graphics Pack introduces features like dynamic shadows, lighting that streams through fog, movement in leaves and grass, new textures for mobs and villagers, directional lighting, edge highlighting and more! This Pack will be available on Xbox One and Windows 10, performing best on high-end PCs and the Xbox One X (formerly known as Project Scorpio).

Now keep in mind that these are entirely optional. We wanted to take advantage of 4K gaming and give players a whole new way to see the game. But only if you want! Minecraft's original lovely look is going nowhere. We'll have more info about the release date of the free 4K update and Super Duper Graphics Pack DLC closer to release.

And that's it! We hope you're excited as we are about this year’s plans for Minecraft. 4K gaming, cross-platform play and in-game servers... makes you wonder how we could possibly top this next year! Gulp. Happy crafting!

my question is... since the PC version is $26.95, how much will the Xbox version be?

can someone explain to me how this game is fun. I played the demo and it seemed like the worst and most boring game I have ever played. Build a table and eat a pig? What is the big deal about this game?

The best way to play is with your friends. It's a cool get together and just build whatever type of game. It is pretty lame if you play it by yourself though. I find it decent, but with the games coming out in the next few weeks, it will only see very little playing time after this Tuesday.

on some nights, my friends and I hang out in a party at the dashboard, just talking. people constantly dropping in and out and everyone saying hi. totally has a college dorm vibe.

hanging out in a minecraft world is a pretty cool idea.

/nerd

Basically if you ever loved legos as a kid, thats minecraft. It's less of a game, and more of a interactive hobby it seems to me. Virtual legos.

the Enterprise was an amazing achievement.

but the guy kinda cheated in that he didn't build it within the game. he took the blueprints, did it in GIMP (the free equivalent to Photoshop), and then put the layers into the level editor.

"He used the plans created by Ed Whitefire, who was commissioned to create the original plans before being replaced by Mike Okuda. Whitefire's plans are available online, and Walker used those as a reference.

"I originally took all the decks from the Whitefire plans and layered them in Gimp. I then re-sized the plans to a 1 pixel = 1 meter scale." He then reduced each deck to a two-color bitmap exported as a layer, which he considers the most tedious part of the project. "After that, the level editor for Minecraft sucked up each layer and spit out what you saw. When I wandered around on the ship for the first time, I was so pleased it worked out so well."

still a long tedious effort but not the monumental effort it would've taken if he did it in the game.

There's a big difference between this and real Legos - real Legos would actually be fun to play with.

I'm a first time crafter and I find this game fun and relaxing.

Question...

I finished the little house from the tutorial and every time I try to sleep through the night monsters wake me from my sleep. The house is complete and well lit. Not sure what I am doing wrong???

It happens in any bed it seems. I only have the demo for now but I have also woken up to a bunch of creepers right outside the house.

I just wish the demo wasn't timed, you really can't do anything in such a short period of time.

Played this for a few hours last night with a bud online.

It was relaxing, hilarious, and fun. We built an entrance in to the side of a cliff and were trying to build a massive underground fortress. I walked outside at daylight and a creeper was just sitting there waiting to splode our creation. We laughed pretty hard when it blew a massive hole in the side of our "fortress" and we both got killed.

I see myself getting a ton of enjoyment out of this one. Sure, it's not for everyone, but all I see when I play it is almost unlimited potential. If they can continue to support and update like they have on the pc, this is going to be great.

I wish there was a way to turn off (or make transparent) the row of boxes below your health. I have a plasma tv that I use for only movies/gaming and I know the boxes will cause image retention, and possibly worse if I were to play for a long time. I've only been playing the demo of the game and as far as I can tell you can't make any adjustments to the boxes, unless the full version has more options.

The exterior should to be lit up as well and make sure no MOB can spawn within 2 blocks of your bed (that is what wakes you up). Best bet is a 6 x 5 interior house (or bigger) with your bed in the middle.

Some quick math: Over a million units sold at $20 a pop = more than $20 million in revenue generated by Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition… in under a week.

More Minecraft metrics from Microsoft's Major Nelson:

Total Online Hours: 5.2M

Multiplayer sessions: 4M

Total Multiplayer gaming hours: 2.4M

The game became the fastest-selling XBLA game ever mere hours following its March 9 release

While not everyone's cup of tea, just goes to show you how successful a game that gets something right for many can be.

There was quite an amount of rage. I for one don't blame em either. That being said. I'm surprised so many people still don't have an HDTV. Not even 720...

No, really there was not that much rage. The only thing affected is split-screen. Regular play works fine on an SD display, as does Live play.

Don't pretend like the problem is bigger than it actually is.

If the guy can't even afford a $5 cable to hook his 360 to a PC monitor, he shouldn't be gaming. I have a VGA cable, an HDMI cable, and a HDMI-to-DVI cable for various monitors.

I don't think there was much outrage. But suddenly every 360 owner had an SDTV and tried to get a refund (and was successful depending on the CSR). Gamers always looking to take advantage of the system.

I thought most didn't get a refund? That's how the article I had read came to play. Maybe the over dramatized it.

I think it is more likely that people don't have a monitor to hook up to their $5 cable. I would imagine that a lot of 360 users are kids who have a console hooked up to some old family TV in their bedroom.

I find it awfully hard to imagine a household that doesn't even have a PC.

If it was 1985, yeah, that would make sense.
