I personally would not as I only use Gamefly to rent games. I think that this would be a deal breaker for many gamers.

That's not going to happen. They will probably retail for $70.

I'm trying to wrap my brain around how they will make it happen. Will the disk have a small area where the xbox burns the consoles id onto it during the first play and now it's branded to that disk? Will all xboxes have to be online only ala steam?
I've bought some crappy games this generation, full price. Houses across the land will have their very own home wall of shame because they could not trade them into the bargin bin where they belong.

I don't see them tying a game purchase to an individual user account. How would that work if you have family members? Would they not be able to play it?

Sure. Physical media is going out anyway.
By the time this console comes out my guess is that GameFly will be gone.

I dislike buying used games. I'm more concerned about how they will implement this type of system. If I buy a game, will family members get to play it? Can I lend it to a friend? Will it be tied to the console or a user account? Will they prevent access or revoke my license if I violate some kind of TOS?

I will not buy such a system that will not allow used games. Although I sometimes wait for new games to go on sale or lucky to find unopened games on craigslist but I don't like this limitation at all.

I'd buy it but, outside of a few titles, I'd wait for games to be on sale before I bought them.

does this mean that if you played on a game on the 360 you won't be able to play it on the 720 ?

I applaud developers wanting to get paid for their hard work. I also applaud DRM that is transparent and actually works.

Yes. I think the stores rip off consumers on used games in that I can always find them cheaper new.

What bugs me the most about this is not buying used games, but selling my games so I can buy new games. I don't buy used for many reasons, but it helps to buy new games with the credit from trade ins.

Also, I don't mind supporting developers who've created/designed a game, but $70 new, especially without physical media possibly, that's a bit much. If its a download the price should stay at $60 or lower cause they won't have the cost of making and distributing the discs and having the middle man get a cut too, I.e. best buy, target, etc.

Wishful thinking. The xbox is too popular, if they can increase margins they will. Look at the kindle, when it first came out it was a niche market and amazon said all books would be $7.99 or less. Now that the kindle is hugely popular prices on a new release book are $25+ which is cheaper than hard cover but the same as a paperback. There is no printing, shipping, storage costs yet because they have the convenience factor they can charge that price. I guarantee the same will be true of digital downloads of new xbox games.

I'd prob still buy it, but I'd buy about 20% as many games as I do now. OTOH, if at the same time sony announced a PS4 that didn't have the same restriction...forget about it.

A system where I can't buy cheap older games or resell my own games is significantly less valuable to me.

I see them doing more of the online codes like EA does over the console not playing used games. I think at this point all the consoles will have physical media. There are still a lot of people in rural areas without highspeed internet access. A lot of people still have dsl and it would take forever to download a game. I cant imagine them shutting these customers out. They would be losing a fairly large market. Just my 2 cents.

Wouldn't stop me for a second. I don't buy used games and I can count on one hand the number of games I have sold. I don't want to support a system where small developers get screwed out of money they deserve. If I can't afford a game I wait till I can. In general I buy the games I want to play and support.

I second most of your statements, not being able to play used games on the next Xbox won't have any impact on me - I'll purchase it regardless.

I've never sold a game I've purchased (for Xbox or Xbox 360), and I've probably purchased a handful of used games for the Xbox 360, always after Christmas with Gamestop gift cards.

Count me out of any system that requires me to buy new games (exclusively). I just hope enough consumers feel the same as I do and show Microsoft this plan won't be economically viable.

Does not make any difference for me as well. In addition to hassle of selling the disc to Gamestop and what not, the price they pay for used games is pretty low (usually well under $20), even though they may turn around and sell it for twice what they paid or more.

I rather keep my discs...

I wouldn't buy it, just on general priciples. Having a manufacturer dictate the ownership rights of a product after you've purchased it is downright obnoxious. It doesn't matter if I buy used games or not (and I do on occasion), it amounts to my rights as a consumer being eroded even more than they are today. Believe me, nothing good for the consumer will come out of this.

The only reason I still buy pc games is because I can find them for dirt cheap, rental-like prices. I really doubt MS/Sony/Nintendo will allow third parties to sell dl versions of their games at 90% off like I can with pc games. And I'm sure you'll be restricted to playing those games on one account/console. With pc games, I can install them on mutiple rigs and disconnect from the internet to play if I have to.

I already had this issue last Christmas concerning drm. I bought my son his own Xbox 360 to take with him to college and he wanted to play the dlc from the Mass Effect series. Well, since it was tied to my account and I wasn't going to let him have that account because of stuff my younger son and I have, I purchased it over again for his account. Yes, I knew this was going to happen, but that still doesn't wash that putrid taste out of my mouth. And just think this could happen with every part of every game in the future!

From my latest experience though I can't really see that as a valid reason to not allow used games to be played on xbox 720. MW3 is big pile of mess but they made billions off of it. If they really want us to purchase new games only then they better make sure it's a quality product. If it isn't perfect on release day then eff it.

I don't follow your logic:
  • MW3 is a pile of crap
  • MW3 sold really well at release and the company made billions (millions?)
  • <...one or more missing steps...>
  • somehow allowing used games to be played affects this
  • if it isn't perfect on release day then eff it

I seriously don't see how used games fits into your argument.

I for one would rather buy new and have the developer get their slice of the pie so that they can develop the next game I want to play, than buy used and have GameStop make all the money with the developer getting ZERO.

If people choose to buy crappy Madden games year after year, that has nothing to do with the used market. Unless of course those people really think getting $5 back when they sell it is a good deal.
