Wow. Just played a mission last night in Assassin's Creed 3 that made me stop just to stare awestruck at the graphics. I was scaling the outer wall of a seaside Fort, with the sun setting behind me over the sea. It was visually stunning. A real graphic highlight of my Looooooonng time gaming life.

What graphic scenes do you remember from video games over the years that stand out?

Some of mine:

- the one I mentioned above
- On TV SPorts Football (Atari ST), when it switched to the "behind the kicker" view
- My first time I scaled a fair sized mountain in Skyrim and looked around at a nearby river and waterfall
- Gran Tourismo 4 photo mode (the first time I did it)

"Where's the Imp???" "SHUTUP!!"

prob the biggest one of this generation was the first uncharted game when he got to water, seeing how the water affected his clothes and just the way the water moved...

I remember seeing the first Colony Wars and being amazed at the star lens flair and space debris making everything look really 3D. I can't believe they've never gone back to that series.

Yeah, I haven't seen a good space game since CW2, and no good fliers at all since Crimson Skies frown.gif

I'd say the entirety of Gears of War 3 and Rage. Loved Gears but Rage was only 'meh'. Amazing visuals, though...

Although the graphics aren't top notch, the way they were put together with the landscape was fantastic in Red Dead Redemption. I'll never forget riding on horseback coming over a hill and seeing the gorgeous plains below me with the sun setting. I just stopped the horse and sat there...awesome.

I'll go old school a bit, but here are some of my faves.

- Unreal Tournament (original) - Facing Worlds map. The starts, earth in the background, the whole thing was just so awesome.
- Condemned - the detail was so incredible when I first played that game, it was the first game that just looking at the greasy, rusty wet walls made me feel dirty.
- Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow/Chaos Theory. The rain scene on the lighthouse - insane. The sneak scene up the candle lit stairs with the vegatation - nuts.

For me it was the old PC game Homeworld 1999. For it's time it was spectacular, and still looks good today.

I agree with you, this was a beautiful game, the atmosphere was complete with the great music. I wish they'd bring this to the Xbox!

I did that, too - except there was a river below (not plains). They were very, very nice graphics.

Gears 1 (was amazing back in 2006). The underwater level in Gears 3. When the mountain crumbles in the original Crysis. Some of the huge bosses in Vanquish.

Back in the waning days of the original Xbox I picked up Ninja Gaiden Black on the basis of some glowing reviews. I'm not much of an action/fighting game fan but for $15 or so it was low-risk. That game was incredible looking, not so much due to "wow" vistas or anything but the overall quality of the environments, characters, animations, and the pretty steady 60 fps it maintained. The canned cutscense were also of incredible quality. I don't think anything on the original Xbox compared.

The last time I played Condemned was on a 480P plasma, and even on that TV it was a stunner. I'm going to have to dig the game up and throw it onto my newer (actual HD!) TV and see how it holds up.

Crysis 2 - overall graphics

Red Dead Redemption - technical draw distance

Gears of War - art style

Dead Space - atmosphere, details and lighting

Not many this generation, to be honest. Most of the breath-catching moments have come from art design rather than tech: Rayman Origins, Scott Pilgrim, etc.

Tech-wise, this generation has been such a slow burn and gradual progression that nothing I can think of really surprised me in that way.

The first time I saw/played the original Gran Turismo I was blown away by the fact you could actually tell what makes and models the cars were.

Playing through Golden Eye on the N64 I really felt the movie connection.

Uncharted 3, especially in 3D, was truly amazing. It was so dynamic...those places where lesser games cut away to cutscenes or scripting, you took full part in. You get a little glimpse of where this is all headed.

I always thought there was something special about the look of world of warcraft, that transcended tech and just looked beautiful.

And even though its intentionally lo-fi, Limbo is one of the few games that simply don't look like a video game at all. Like a haunting dream in black and white.

Good to see that I wasn't the only person to do that. For a fraction of a second, I actually thought about what a great picture it would make.

Same here. Those two games are great examples of how real these games can feel. And, as good as they are, I can't help but wonder how these kinds of scenes are going to look once we hit 4K gaming.

El Shaddai-Ascension of Metatron. Spectacular graphics. And a real sleeper of a game. Witty...great story...and as expected stunning & shifting visual landscapes. Plus its a super cheapo right now. I just love how they portrayed ther devil in this game. They were obviously expecting to make a sequel.
