An interesting article here that touches on what I was talking about before, that the extreme violence seems way over the top and out of place in this game. Some very good points are made in the first few paragraphs:

This is the second time you've said something in this thread along those lines. Honestly, what exactly do you expect in terms of breaking free from the typical FPS formula? I personally didn't find Infinite to be as much of a shooter as you did, but I don't think we are going to see a paradigm shift in the way FPS games play in the near future.

Mirrors Edge was a pretty interesting, different sidetrack.

It was quickly squashed and back to BAU cause of COD's popularity, and publisher chasing the king.

Im sure a great deal of the game doesn't involve shooting - the whole first hour or so I hadn't fired a shot, and it was completely engaging. I never felt like "god, when will it get to the game already?" Even putting aside my misgivings about the brutality - once the sh*t hit the fan, I spent the next hour or so killing people left and right, probably left a wake of no less than 20-30 bodies. The shooting was pretty tight, that wasnt the problem at all....and I love a good shooter. Its just the game before that point was considerably more interesting. Even if it ebbs and flows between the shooting and exploration - what if it just wasnt a shooter? It could probably tell a more focused and meaningful story.

It's kind of the same deal with the cover art, where people got all upset because it made it look like just another dumb shooter. Ken levine's response was "we need it to appeal to frat boys too". I think that compromise went deeper than just the cover art. It's a little harder for me to take it seriously it it doesn't take itself seriously, and it dilutes the underlying message.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all saying its a bad game, and its hardly alone in this type of thing.

Just finished it myself... I pretty much agree entirely with bd2003. The story is pretty good, but the gunplay is entirely uninteresting. The rails were supposed to be exciting and different, but under-used. Fighting was completely repetitive: Shock or Crows, shoot while stunned, repeat (and before you ask I was playing on Hard). I found that I dreaded getting into combat, because it wasn't fun at all.

And I'd agree that it's not a bad game. The graphics are great, the city has a ton of personality, and Elizabeth is up there with Alyx Vance and Clementine as being the top 'partners' in games ever. But it's entirely overrated, and the reason is that as an actual game, it doesn't match up to the rest of its features.

My short take: The game was good, but ultimately dissapointing. I had very high expectations for this version of Bioshock. The first Bioshock is easily in my top 10 games for Xbox if not ever. So part of the disappointment had to do with my bias going into the game. I can't say much about the mechanics of the game that hasn't already been said, but I'll say one more time the rails was a let down.

About the gore.. I had no problem with it. It's bioshock. The other bioshock's had gore as well. Booker isn't Lara Croft.... He's not just some innocent person. He kills people... That's what he does. The other bioshock games had a little more of a creepy atmosphere due to the different setting. Infinite has some similar parts as well. At the very beginning of the game when you enter the lighthouse you see a bloodied dead body with a sack over its head. The gore fits the tone of the game just fine.

Just finished up what an ending didn't see that coming. Game play was pretty straight forward fps, graphics live up to the praise as does the story still not sure any game is worth sixty bucks but I'm not feeling cheated. Would like to hear from those who went with the season pass.

PS Went ahead and got the season pass after reading positive reviews, seems a pretty good deal for future expansion packs and an immediate vigor and weapons upgrades

Finally finished it today. My opinion that the gunplay was completely out of place only got stronger....by far the most interesting and engaging parts of the game were the moments when you weren't shooting anything. And the gameplay was so vastly improved over the first one too, it was actually pretty good....but it still was a distraction. Like it made what was a very smart game, into something a little dumber, a little harder to take serious. Just like Bioshock 1, it won't be remembered for its gameplay, but everything else. Columbia was such a cool place to be, I'd love to have seen and explored more of it before I started killing everyone in it. I know in this day and age it would be pretty much impossible to make something of this scale without it being a gamey game....but you can start to see how they can get there. At least they made the gameplay so forgiving that you didnt constantly get stuck and ruin the pacing...except for that one part.

Still though, the world and art were amazing. Incredible use of music as well. It's an absolute must play, kind of hard to see how this doesn't win GOTY.

It was a pretty good journey, but I found the ending a letdown. Not that you die, but that it's supposed to be the way to resolve the whole problem. Only, it wouldn't, not at all. Sure, there'd be no Elizabeth to be exploited, but the "prophet" would still do every bad thing he's done and it would do nothing to stop his "raining fire" future plans

eta - I did forget one little line that suggest Booker could be Comstock, but that still brings in the whole paradox thing.

For everyone complaining about the shooting, I have to wonder, why are you using guns? You have a brutal melee weapon, gear that enhances melee, and vigors; all for a reason. I used the carbine occasionally in my play through, but for the most part I created chaos within attacking groups then went in close for some more personal murder. The combat was great! Y'all were just doing it wrong. smile.gif

I just started playing this the last night (got it from gamefly saturday) and I played for about an hour and got frustrated and cut it off. Did anyone else have a problem with the horizontal aiming? I hate the way when you press the right stick to the left, the movement starts out slow then speeds up the longer you hold it. I overshoot everything. I tried doing one of the shooting mini games and couldn't hit anything at all.

Is there a way to turn this off? I tried turning down the look sensitivity(started with it on default in the middle), but that just made the slow start to turning unbearable.

Maybe I'll just wait til it goes on sale on steam again before I play it.

A couple of things you can try:

1. Change your control scheme in the options menu to allow aiming down the sights with the left trigger (I found this to be much easier for me).

2. Turn Frame Lock off in the options menu. The game will be more responsive and less sluggish feeling (I played with it off during my second playthrough. I got used to the screen tearing and honestly wouldn't play it again without turning it off).

Brad's point number one is a big thing. The default control scheme was convoluted. Switching to the COD4 control scheme helps a lot. I had forgotten about that.

I'll try both of those. I turned off vsync right at the beginning when I'm in the underground chambers, but it seemed to make things really stuttery (not really tearing as I know it). But I'll try it again and see if I can get used to it.

Rumor is Levin is supposed to release the first BSI addition for season pass holders at the end of July (they have until 3-2014 according to the fine print) . From what I understand this is and the following additions will be all new material and not just unlocking something already on the disk. I've played through the game a few times and love the story but I'm left with questions which may or may not be answered but at any rate the additions will be welcomed.

Got this Saturday and beat it today. Seems short but what a ride! That ending was awesome! That kind of ending was what I expected of Mass Effect. Nice long drawn out closure. Need to read some spoilers and see if I understand it all but it seemed pretty straight forward.

Did they bring back the Weapon Wheel with this DLC? I do not remember being able to do that in Infinite? I thought you could only have whatever two weapons you were equipped with, or could you always select other weapons?
