Disney has laid off the staff of LucasArts and cancelled all current projects.

Staff were informed of the shutdown this morning, according to a reliable Kotaku source. Some 150 people were laid off, and both of the studio's current projects--Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313--were cancelled.

This comes after weeks and months of rumors involving the studio, which was acquired by Disney last fall. In September, LucasArts put a freeze on all hiring and product announcements, which many staff saw as the beginning of the end. Today, it's official: the longrunning studio is no more.

in loving memory:

No Star Wars 1313? I guess Disney didn't want to get a truckload of money, because a lot of us nerds looked forward to that one.

I have been waiting years in hopes we'd see a nice polished sequel to Battlefront, one of the best MP games ever. This really sucksass.

It's all becoming clear. Disney = Empire. LucasArts = Jedi.

Dark Forces came out in 1995. This was followed by 18 years of garbage. Their closing is no big loss.

Tie Fighter was their last great Star Wars game imho (Battlefronts were Pandemic Studios). Have to agree with DLJ. More missed for their adventure games, which they stopped making long ago despite fans clamoring for more.

RIP... I know a few people who were there when Lucas Arts first started and produced many of the great early titles. Sorry to see such titan from that era dismissed so easily.

Terrible. The X-Wing series was my favorite growing up.

And let's not forget:

Well, they're not going to stop making Star Wars games, they're just not making them in house. This could end up being a good thing if they farm it out to studios that can do a better job. Lucasarts had its heyday, but they haven't put out anything great in years. Which was probably the fault of poor management rather than a lack of talent, but still - they wouldn't have done this if the division was more successful in recent years.

Full Throttle 2 would have been wonderful, probably a better shot of Disney licensing it than of Lucasarts doing it.

This news made me nerd mad. Could they not have at least offered jobs to at least some of the talented people at LucasArts? People tend to be bashing Disney but I actually think this was a pretty douche thing for George Lucas to do. I mean, ok, it's his company, his intellectual property, but why dump his own baby so unceremoniously and for such an obvious motherload payout. I don't begrudge him his riches, but that's the point, as far as I know the Star Wars empire if you will was already a massive cash cow for him. I don't know, seems like they could have treated a pioneering game dev firm better on the way out...hopefully I'm wrong and they were all rewarded with nice big golden severance packages and all is well. But for the nerdy fans like me, I still sits a little funny on the funny bone.

There were some masterpieces and some pieces of ****!
Disney just wants to make sure that they have full control, of course.

When I first heard this news, I was pretty upset. That was me thinking with my heart and looking back on all of the great Lucasarts games that I enjoyed in the 90's. The fact remains that Lucasarts really hadn't put out anything worth mentioning in quite some time. Star Wars 1313 looked extremely promising, but the last game that really got me geeked were the KOTOR games and Lucasarts only published those....

I think it would be unwise for Disney to not pursue 1313 or Battlefront, but then again I have read that politics and the unfortunate shooting tragedies we have seen this year played some role in the decision to cancel, or the very least farm out these games.
