If this ends up being true, why can't they just offer the option to have the disc in the drive as authentication? Then their authentication only comes into play if you want to play without the disc present in the drive (Granted you could share a game with someone that keeps their system offline but I can't imagine that very many are going to have a buddy that's contented to restrict themselves to the single player component of games like Call of Duty).

And I still say all of this is nonsense anyways. The people that find the ability to not switch discs all of the time as more than adequate compensation for the loss of our freedoms we've enjoyed with traditional media in the past are likely to be taking their convenience a step further anyways by just downloading their software anyways for even greater convenience. So if they're not going to monetize used sales after all, I wish they'd not cripple their system.

Being able to play the single and local multiplayer components of retail games with no reliance on their servers would completely resolve the biggest issue many of us have.

That would be the ideal way to do it:

1 -check if you have the disc in the drive
2 - if not, check that the MS hosts have not seen it installed more recently on another X-bone. If it has been, prompt to load the disc to re-authenticate, buy the new version of the online pass, or cancel.
3 - If you are not online, prompt to load the disc.

I could live with that.

Even better would be if there was a grace period for the 2nd step, maybe one day or two - giving you the chance to try co-op or other online play with a friend with only one purchase, but for a limited timeframe.

I've been with AVS almost since its inception a long time ago. I know the owner, Alan Gouger, personally and used to work here as well. I've just been curious about the xbone and have been following this thread. I'm not a gamer and my interest is in its TV functionality. I'm hoping it will have some WMC capabilities where you can use a USB and/or network Cablecard tuner with it as your TV/DVR/Media Server and possibly the Xbox 360s as WMC Extenders for whole home distribution. For some reason as soon as I saw your "that's no moon" comment my brain immediately thought of Obi Wan in the Millenium Falcon in the original Star Wars as they approach the Death Star so I blurted it out, carry on! tongue.gif

I havent heard anything about WMC on Xbox One....I think they want to deprecate it entirely. But if the Xbox One has DVR functionality, it will probably record to a format thats compatible with the 360....we probably wont know the answer to this until it comes out.

It would be fantastic if a way came out to use the X1 as a fully functional cable box/ DVR.

It wouldnt be kind of ridiculous if it didnt have some sort of DVR functionality....although it may just rely on the DVR in your cable box. Without it though, it would be such an incomplete solution for televsion....I can't imagine they don't have a plan here.

Just reading through this thread it's amazing all the different handles people have giving the xbox one. Personally I like the Xbone the most. X1 makes me think of the Thinkpad Carbon X1 or the BMW.

E3 is going to make it or break it for me. It's all about the games CONTROLLER based games. I don't want to be talking to my xbox to play COD.

The way I see it, xbone is a term of endearment that it hasn't earned yet. Once they show me something great, I might reconsider my stance. tongue.gif

Endearment? I read that as x-bone and think it's some sort of insult. I guess I need to squint or something for it to read nicely...

In Pee Wee Herman's Big Adventure, at the end when he gets his story turned into a movie, the motorcycle (his bike, lol) is called the X1. I love that movie for some dumb @ss reason, and still quote it today. I will forever call it the X1 because of that.

Agreed. I really believe it started as an insult and it's just caught on. No one ever called the 360 xb360. It won't matter though after a year or so people will just call it the One and we'll be past all this foolishness.

People complain about the name Xbox One or XBOne. But it is just as bad or good as when they named the current system Xbox 360.

I dunno....its a pretty bad name. There already was an xbox one to everyone....the first xbox. Its like calling the next xbox "Three Sixty".

I'm on the fence already as to whether I'm going to jump on the Xbone at all, let alone at launch. The one thing that will definitely make me jump ship is if my current Fanatec CSR wheel is not compatible with it, which as of right now looks shaky at best. If the PS4 offers such compatibility, I'll switch allegiances next gen, and get my sim racing fix with the GT series. And if they decide to lock out current Fanatec owners, I'll get a new PC and jump into Project CARS. At least I know my wheel will work with that.

There's actually tons of us, but we hang out in the forums discussing WMC, USB and network cablecard tuners, extenders, etc. When the xbone news came out the DVR/Server features became a hot topic of speculation. You'll probably be seeing a lot more of us assimilate into this thread like a Borg invasion! This "IS" the Official XBone thread after all biggrin.gif

It doesn't lend itself well to a shortened version of the name for brevity. There was no need to shorten Xbox and the Xbox 360 was regularly referred to as just the 360. But as this thread shows, the Xbox One name is posing a bit of a problem there.

All three were rather horrible names though.

Not really. Not enough real info yet. Most seem to see it as a glorified GoogleTV box with its only TV option being an HDMI pass through with xbone overlay, and we all know how THAT turned out! rolleyes.gif That's why the speculation about USB and Ethernet Cablecard tuner support along with extenders.

I'm hoping both companies discuss their online plans at E3. I want to hear if both are charging for multiplayer. That will actually go a long way to decide who I go with.

Well, it's a thought, but take the same logic applied to the 360 and use it here. Call it the One. I'm not sure why that's so hard for people to do.

If that's actually the US launch price it's going to fly just about as well as the $600 for the launch model PS3. Of course that depends on what Sony fields, but if they ship without PS4 Eye packed in they should be able to do considerably better.

GameStop has being saying that they expected lower launch prices than the previous gen.

Calling it "One" makes me think of every bad pun involving the word, including the Matrix, it also makes me think of Oneechan.... XBone just works better, as there is zero confusion asto what you are talking about. XB1 will probably be the prefered shorthand (three letters vs 5...) but XBone will stick around because Microsoft wants the one spelled out and they do not want it called just "One"

Yeah--I'm betting that MS will never refer to it as Xbone. I'm sure that they will absolutely prefer XB1 as an abbreviation. I think that "the One" works as well as "the 360". It will rarely if ever be referred to outside of sufficient context for people to be sure of what's being talked about.
