Indeed. If E3 were open to the public they'd have to shut the conference down there'd be so many people there. It's industry only for a reason. Gamescon is big but there's a reason E3 is where all the biggest announcements happen. Since as long as I can remember there's never been a major console launch at anything other than E3.

Good points. Gamescon has had some major software announcements like The Last of Us. I believe you are right that E3 has been for all the major hardware.

Yeah it seems software tends to get announced whereever (gamescon, TGS, etc.) while hardware (at least consoles) tend to stick to E3. That's ok though gives us a reason to anticipate all the shows.

I am all over the Xbox One but I still think MS needs to hit a home run at Gamescon. Even though they have gained back some ground with the changes since E3, they need to drop a bomb on Sony.

FIFA 14 to come free with Xbox One? Gamescom announcement expected

Microsoft has turned to Electronic Arts in a bid to spark interest in Xbox One, MCV has been told.

At Gamescom tomorrow, an Xbox One/FIFA 14 tie-up will be announced in a bid to win over European gamers, according to two senior games industry sources. The bundle will still retail for £429.99, the same price as the Xbox One base unit.

The move is designed to make Xbox One appear better value for money as it currently retails for £80 more than PS4. FIFA 14 has an RRP of £54.99.

We checked with EA and Microsoft, who both said: 'no comment'. But we should know all the details tomorrow morning.

FIFA is the biggest game in Europe - FIFA 13 sold 3m copies in the UK alone over the last year – so the deal would make sense. And is a potential coup for Microsoft.

It would also be a show of commitment to Europe after the platform holder disappointed consumers by announcing that some markets would have to wait until 2014 to buy Xbox One.

Now if you needed to pick a game I wouldn't play for free ...... This will be big in Europe, I know how much they like their "football" but I'd hope they would do something else for the US market. But it is possible that only the European markets are getting this deal..

If true it would add value for those who are fans of the game. For me it would be great if it were PES (though they are releasing 2014 on PS3/Xbox 360 only I think).

Lots of people here are calling it Gamescon but I see that it's actually Gamescom. Does anyone know why? What is "com" short for?

I doubt the US will get anything like this. We're not being shortchanged with the launch like they are. Besides, does MS really need to pack in a game here?

Do you really think MS would give a free game overseas and not give it to their biggest costumer base? I am just hoping it will be added to the day one consoles. If not, I will gladly cancel it and get the bundle that comes with it.

I didn't even think of that. So this probably the freebie they were talking about then for cancelling 2013's launch? I was kind of assuming it was just trying to entice more orders/pack in value.

That's what I thought it was--an apology for those European countries who were suppose to be in the first wave of the launch and got pushed back into 2014. Of course, those European countries who remain in the first wave of the launch benefit as well (Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom).

True, not a bad deal. I would have expected a cheaper XBLA style game for the freebie.

I wonder if this means we'll hear about some new feature tying Xbone to PC or Kinect 2.0.

regional bundling is not new...

The US never got this Euro bundle (karaoke is far more popular in Europe and Japan than the US):

did we get this bundle?

did we get this bundle?

Allegedly... "According to Microsoft Portugal, there will be an exclusive bundle for the Portuguese market. The pack will consist of GTA IV, a xbox 360 elite and 1600 ms points. This limited edition will be available on the 29th of April and will be sold at €389,99."

Sure, why not? The US is their strongest market, why would they need to give something away when it's assured they'll sell well regardless? Europe (well most of it anyway) has traditionally been Sony territory and MS needs to show some good will, hence the lack of region locking and the idea of a pack-in game. Is it any coincidence they announced these two after the cut back on available inventory?

I worry that they're trying to devalue GFWL (lol if you can even do that anymore) to force people to go to Win8 and use their store for games purchases. Remember Gabe Newell said essentially this when Win8 was announced hence why Valve has been hedging their bets with better Mac support and now Linux support plus the rumored Steambox. It's starting to look like they're heading that way.

I don't see that as a bad thing. Cross-buy on PC and Xbox would be awesome, its a big step towards the buy it once and play it anywhere future. I know everyone loves steam, but I don't want them to have a monopoly over PC gaming.

Depending on the game...riight now you can buy on steam and play on three platforms (PC/Mac/Linux). Sony has PS3/PS4/Vita.
MS could potentially offer Win8/360/X1/WinPhone.

I don't think it'll be long before you can buy something like BF5 on Origin or Watch Dogs 2 on uplay, and play it on PC/X1/PS4. All your stats seamlessly carry over etc...who can team up with or play against depends on which network you're on.

No doubt there's definite upsides. I just feel Steam is the superior service though and don't care to have such a fragmented experience (Steam, Origin, Win8). Something's gonna give eventually and I'd like the option of keeping a desktop option. To lock me into the Win8 store on my desktop is a step in the wrong direction I believe. Then again maybe the days of the desktop really are numbered and this is just a natural step.
