Judging by all the noise on the internet, two of my favorite shooting franchises have been rushed. COD is suffering frame-rate issues on all platforms, which to me is completely unacceptable. Battlefield is also suffering a host of problems, though I can't imagine that I will so much as notice. Seems to be mostly a PC issue.

I'm skipping COD this go around, until I can get it for 30 bucks anyways. Really a shame. I wish that the devs were allowed to take their time with these games and work out the kinks. COD NEEDS 60FPS. That's like a franchise staple.

Looks like I'll be waiting for Titanfall and Halo 4 before I get a truly stellar shooting experience. Though, I'm still salivating at the prospect of 64p metro on consoles, all juiced to hell in the visual department. *gargle* *swoon* *preen*

Also, as far as people getting free Killer Instinct and fee XB1s today... I'm sad to say I was not included. I know that there have been obvious inconsitencies in how the awards were handed out... with lots of long-time supporters getting the shaft... but I'm dissapointed. As someone who beta tested XBLive, has had every Xbox console at launch (and two of each), have an X1 preordered since the reveal event, and have literally poured my money into Xbox Live and Xbox games... I'm feeling rather betrayed. Some snot-nosed kid who has had an Xbox for 4 years is probably getting a free box and a free copy of KI, and I'm sitting here, undoubtedly one of Xbox and MS' top supporters (typing on my lumia 520, using my Surface RT, hooked into Xbox Live through every avenue, writing code on W7) with nothing to show for it.

Thanks for recognizing my support, MS. Not that I'll stop... but I will remember this.

How well do the HDM switches work? I like this idea and may consider it for the Xbox one. Though honestly I may just plug my Xbox 360 into. Then again I was going to have to swap out the HD-DVD player to get the Xbox one to fit in my cabinet, maybe I'll put the One on top of the HD DVD player and plug the HD-DVD player into that and still have everything biggrin.gif

Well you would just purchase one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Portta-PET0301S-HDMI-Switcher-Support/dp/B00B46XUQU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383757655&sr=8-1&keywords=hdmi+switch

Basically how it would work, is you would just tell the Xbox to switch to TV, because it then switches the the HDMI-IN video feed. Which could be any device, then you would just use the remote for the HDMI switch to change which device is being piped through the Xbox One.

So in my case it could look like this:

(All HDMI)
TV <- Receiver <- Xbox One <- HDMI Switch (Connected to Xbox One HDMI-IN) <- Xbox 360, Cable Box, Ouya, Computer

So I would never change the input on the TV, Receiver or Xbox One, but I would just use the HDMI switch remote change which device is in use.

Hope this make sense...

I wouldn't use it for anything latency-sensitive like a game system, since it's going to add input lag by its nature. They've said repeatedly that you can technically pass a game system through it, but since there's going to be some processing delay involved, it wouldn't be ideal. Cable boxes wouldn't be a problem because it doesn't matter if your remote presses are a few ms off from when it happens on-screen... but a few ms more lag could be the difference between life and death in a multiplayer game. Just sayin'...

Ryse.

Quote:
If you’ve ever watched Lost, you’re familiar with the character of Desmond Hume. The former monk was stranded on the series’ mysterious island, and was tasked with repeatedly pressing the same series of buttons on a keyboard for weeks at a time. Why he had to do that is still pretty confusing to me (as is the rest of the series), but I was reminded of Desmond’s task for the duration of my time with the demo for Ryse: Son of Rome. I spent two hours with the Xbox One title, but it felt like I was entering random numbers into a computer rather than actually playing a video game.

It’s clear what Microsoft and developer Crytek are shooting for here. At launch, they want a big budget, epic action game that clearly demonstrates next-gen visuals. Ryse is undeniably pretty, but that’s about all it had going for it in this demo. After a painfully generic story intro, the game began teaching me similarly uninspired combat mechanics. While it tries to sound like an in-depth action game with familiar elements like perfectly-timed blocks and focus meters, the actual experience is anything but deep.

I’m hoping that later levels introduce some more difficult enemies, as the dozens of encounters I had consisted of all the complexity of dialing phone numbers. Almost every fight started with me hitting the attack button a couple of times, then pushing the enemy in an effort to stop him from breaking my combo. Then, I’d continue attacking until he was weak enough for the execution sequence. Once this occurs, the game slows down and the enemy flashes various colors. You press the face button of the appropriate color, and your protagonist Marius dismembers or murders the foe in dramatic fashion.

It’s so basic and predictable, I began testing to see if I could get past most combat situations with one hand. With my left hand completely off the controller, I was able to slice and dice through tons of enemies simply by inputting the same sequence ad nauseum. On a couple of occasions, the game would shift to sequences that involved me defending an area with crossbow stations or ordering my men to block arrows with their shields. These were somehow even less exciting than the tedious swordplay.

When I sat down at the Ryse: Son of Rome station, I was a fairly blank slate when it came to knowledge of the title. I knew it was developed by the talented team at Crytek, and I knew it was gorgeous based on the videos I had seen at conventions, so I was prepared to be impressed. What I didn’t expect was a desire to get up and leave the demo about ten minutes in. I stuck it out in hopes that it would prove itself a deeper experience over time, but its only success was ensuring my wallet will be $60 heavier when the Xbox One launches.

Forza.

Quote:
Fans of the Forza series know that they’re in good hands with the developers at Turn 10. It’s a team that’s made up of car fanatics, which is something that creative director Dan Greenawalt embraces. “We make car porn,” Greenawalt said before I took to Forza Motorsport 5’s sport compact series. Their love shows in the obsessive attention to detail that’s on display the moment you jump into this Xbox One launch title.

I had a chance to race several courses in this series, which took me to Florida’s Sebring International Raceway, Australia’s Mount Panorama, Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit, the cobblestone streets of Prague, and the Top Gear test track in England. During each race, I was amazed at how realistic each of the cars were. Reflections bounce off their windows, dirt subtly accumulates after venturing off course, and windows crack on impact. None of these features are particularly new to racing games, but I’ve never seen cars look this gorgeous in a game before. The cars are clearly the stars of the show here, as the crowds and a few backdrops don’t exactly scream “next-gen.”

Turn 10 has frequently touted its new Drivatar system in Forza 5, which uploads details about your driving style to the cloud after each race. This system is intended to allow for more complex AI behavior in single-player races, and I did see a little of that in action during my laps. Rather than adhering to standard, conservative driving styles, I saw several cars act in a more unpredictable fashion. On more than one occasion, an especially aggressive opponent would veer out of the line of cars for an aggressive takeover attempt, sometimes slamming into me in the process. It’s hard to tell whether this is thanks to the Drivatar system or simply a more aggressive AI code for that vehicle, but Turn 10 claims that Drivatar will substantially change single-player races for the better.

Even as someone who hasn’t done a deep dive on a racing sim since Gran Turismo 3, I found myself impressed by what I played in Forza Motorsport 5. Its stunning vehicle visuals and intriguing Drivatar system have me curious to try the racer out when it releases later this month.

While it will not be as ideal or convenient as it would have been if MS had stuck with its original plan I still plan on going all DD this time around with games. I do not want to have to deal with discs or swapping them ever again. Games are really the only thing I have left that is not totally DD or streamed.

Lots of info coming out today thats all across the board. There is a lot of new gameplay footage and the game looks downright stunning. Makes you wonder if the XB1 can pull this off, that with the right amount of development time and optimization, BF4 could have easily been 1080p and 60fps on XB1 as well.

GI and Joystiq ripped the game to shreds, IGN and a few others praised it and wanted to see more.....

The first thing I'm going to do when the Xbox One arrives is unplug the HDMI from my Tivo and hook it up to the XB1's HDMI-Out. Then I'm going to run the cable that comes with the XB1 from Tivo to the XB1's HDMI-IN. My hope is the XB1's pass-through works as expected and doesn't interfere with TiVo watching when the XB1 is off, and I'll be able to switch back and forth and snap split-screens (via voice command!) without changing inputs on anything.

Skeptical, but it sounds like a fun experiment. biggrin.gif And if it works as good as they claim, it could be pretty damn cool!

You're comparing apples and oranges. Games will of course improve with time, but you can't equate two very different games that way. Also, Ryse is 900p and 30fps.

This is one of the biggest reasons I'm excited to have my new Xbox One. I hope they tie achievements in with it. I really enjoyed earning achievements on my 360 for completing various workouts and hitting calorie burning goals using KinectPlay Fit and etc. I hope they integrate KinectPlayFit functionality also, so you can get an overall picture from games/xbox fitness and etc. They could really transform workout tracking if they also managed to integrate devices such as Fitbit or Nike+ Fuel band and etc....

It is quite an interesting thing they are doing. I kinda wonder how they are determining how you get into the "draw" and then how the draw happens. Heck, what kinda numbers are we talking about too?

They oughta' give free Xbox Ones to people who have had more than 7 distinct console IDs since launch... because they deserve a free one just for being loyal after the RROD stuff.

I've been with Live since it was in beta, have a Surface RT as well, 4 Windows PCs, have owned 3 Xbox 360's even after RRoD, have a Lumia 920, etc. etc. but I don't expect anything. I even owned an original 30GB Zune and have kept my Zune (Xbox Music) Pass! Even with all that it's just the luck of the draw. If they had 100 systems and 1000 people in the same boat as you and me that means 9 in 10 of us are going to be disappointed. That we don't know the complete specifics of how they're selected means it's pointless conjecture on our part and not worth getting upset over. Just enjoy the product.

Ign conveniently put all their video coverage up on one page.

If the voice control for channel changing and that kind of stuff works well at launch, the directv box would be nice. I could watch hockey/football while in loading screens and stuff.

I'm planning to plug my 360 into it. I don't know what the power draw of the Xbox One is while you watch television but it's ecologically irresponsible to use it that way. I don't use my 360 for video streaming either (except for the rare occasional Xbox Video rental); I can stream Netflix, VUDU, Amazon, Blockbuster, etc on my 3.5W Roku 3, <2W Roku 2, one of my 10W BDPs or my TiVo, which is on all of the time anyway.

My hope is that when the Xbox is in OFF or STANDBY state it passes the HDMI input passively and unprocessed without adding any latency. Understandable that there's latency when its on, since it's scaling its display of it and can resize it for snap, etc.

Well, that's one opinion. Here's another, quite positive one from an IGN editor:

Why are they all over in Canada but none in North America? Can not find a single demo system in Orange County!!

There's an empty kiosk for one at my local Wal Mart. Looks like it's coming soon.
