Review of the unit before launch:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/microsoft-xbox-one-console-review,3681.html

I think that review really hits it on the mark about how I feel about the two systems. They are both great but really hard to compare head to head because the X1 just does so much more than the PS4.

The only thing I have seen that could sway my decision to get an X1....if I even get one in the future....would be the fact that there will be some mroe Uncharted on the PS4....

Trying to enjoy the simple things in life.

http://www.techspot.com/review/746-xbox-one/

This is another pre-launch review but it is more of a review of what o expect out of the box with the initial software and does not really look at the unit in its finished future form.

INTERESTING. Good thing I saved the directions and both files.

I hope to not have to need them but if all else fails...I will still go for it.

Last week we had wonderful weather in in southern California...but just our luck...it is now raining!

I can't even remember the last time it rained like this here! Not really changing my plans for tonight still plan to go 15-20 minutes before they open to pick up...hopefully this just makes the line shorter when I get there.

That is efing stupid! So instead of promising lossless audio, perhaps DTS-HD MA they take standard DD via optical out and force and downcovert via pass through... seriously lame!

Well this only affects the optical out, which you would never get any HD codecs from anyway. Games, BRs, etc played from the XBONE through HDMI have all the codecs I believe.

Pisses me off about my Astros, but I think I have a workaround.

Here to help and learn. Thanks AVS.

What I don't understand is that Albert said it was a SW timing issue, but they apparently had enough time to integrate DTS. If they knew they were running short on time and could only enable one of the optical codecs, why choose DTS?? The vast majority of headset amps are Dolby (I only know of one from Creative that accepts a DTS input).

It just goes to show that Microsoft is out of touch with their user base.

Wow, a whole lot of people mad over something that will be patched in. I guess everyone in here has launched a console before so they know exactly what they are talking about and know for a fact that MS is out of touch with the user base. I would love to have surround at launch, but it isn't the end of the world that I may have to wait for a little bit.

Well my workaround is simply going HDMI in from the one, then assign an optical out from my AVR to the mixamp. The DD should go untouched to the Mixamp. I only game with headphones so this should work. Currently, I just go XB360 optical to my mixamp, but I have to mute my AVR since the HDMI is carrying the signal.

I suppose if I ever want to game on the surrond sound, I would just unplug the optical from the AVR, but I would only do that on weekends.

Could you imagine how they would react if the console was delayed a week to patch some of the problems!

It's not just a pass through.

It requires mixing multiple sources and re-encoding them in real time to DD.

While certainly disappointing, it's a shame people get so wored up over these first world problems.

I wonder why? I did download both files and the instructions last night. Maybe they pulled it because of possible issues. There were two files and installation depended on the OS version you had. So maybe if someone tried to install the wrong file it caused issues. i know that was my first thought when it said to install xx file with version aa and install yy file with version bb.(I have no idea what the actual file names and versions were)

This is not surprising. Basically every device that has had an HDMI input had audio issues when it was first released. I did not expect the XBOne to be any different. Especially since things have been very rushed to meet the release date.

WooHoo!! biggrin.gif I see my BestBuy order shows it has been shipped. Now I just need to hope it goes out for delivery tomorrow and also actually gets delivered. Of course it would have been better if I could have received it today. but I'll take Friday over Monday. I'll need to cross my fingers in the hope I get it tomorrow. smile.gif

They added an update to that story.

I would. I plan to leave work as soon as I get the delivery confirmation. No reason to risk having my first package stolen. Of course UPS doesn't usually come out to my neighborhood until around 7pm, so I'll be home already.

UPS just gave the first update on the tracking number. It was just picked up from the Amazon distro, which happens to be 45 minutes from my house. Funny that they made me pay $7.99 for the overnight option and then shipped it UPS ground since that's all that's required to make it my house in one day.

Amazon one day shipping is not necessarily overnight shipping. It just means that they will ship it whatever way to get it to you in one day. This is why now if I do anything faster than Prime 2 day, it will be same day delivery. Which is nice when it's an option. The last time I used it, I placed my order around 11Am and I had the item in my hands by 4PM.

Amazon is really good about refunding those kind of shipping charges. In my experience they do it automatically after the fact for release day orders.

Just past by 2 gamestops and one bestbuy during my lunch break just to see what's on.

Bestbuy -4 waitng
Gamestop - 3 waiting
Gamestop - none

There were way more people waiting for the PS4 last week at the same stores. It's still early tho. The question is, which system had more pre-orders.

I think some of you guys have a different definition of 'mad', 'worked up' and 'end of the world' than I do.

Am I disappointed that a next-gen console being launched in 2013 is lacking a feature that was present on last-gen systems that launched in 2005? Yes.

Am I 'mad' or 'worked up' about it? No, not really. Just posting some relevant information here so everyone who cares about ... you know ... Audio Visual Science (AVS) can make informed decisions about what to do until a patch comes out.

I can't use the workaround posted above, because I don't game in my living room and I don't have a receiver in my office. Honestly, upscaled PLIIx will probably work just fine but it's still disappointing that they left out Dolby Digital for launch.

Yep thats my real concern! Dont trust it getting stolen.

While I am excited to finally get the next gen Xbox, I'm more concerned about a $500 package sitting on my porch unattended for another 6 hours until I get home from work. It also doesn't help that I've been out of the office since Friday, need to catch up on many things at work I've missed and haven't even gotten a chance to play around with the PS4 that was delivered right before I left. I hate to miss more time from work, but I'm thinking about heading out in the next hour or so to go home & secure the package. Worse come to worse, Ill end up coming in very early tomorrow morning to continue making up missed hours from this past work week.
