What exactly is a hardcore gamer? Is there a scientific measurement that determines it?

Or is it something that can not be factually determined. Akin to listening to real hip-hop? What makes hip-hop fake?

I recently purchased an 12 month extension for Xbox Live for $35. On my account page is shows auto renewal - $35. Does that mean I will be charged $35 for auto renewal instead of $60, or whatever its is? I normally cancel auto renewal.

Does having keyless entry make me less passionate about driving?

I think your reaction is exactly why I made the post. If your core passion is gaming you might look at all of the extras features and say to yourself "I don't need those" or consider them a distraction from what matters…games. I think it actually has the opposite impact, it simply makes the games much more a part of your other entertainment interests. I would like to think most people on these forums are pretty hardcore about most things audio visual and I just found it surprising that by combining them it has enhanced both gaming and other forms of entertainment. In no way has it diminished the gaming, if that is your core interest.

Well, you self identified as someone who will go months without gaming. That's decidedly not hardcore. Most "gamers" don't need to run their TV through their console in order to be enticed to play more games...that's what they'd be doing by default anyway.

There was definitely a sacrifice made in gaming/AV performance to enable those convenience features. Clearly that was the right trade off to make in your case. I wouldn't generalize beyond that and assume some people "just don't get it."

I hope that doesn't come off as hostile, I'm not putting the Xbox down...it sounds like you made exactly the right choice for your needs.

I understand and I don't take it as hostile. I agree I am no longer a hardcore gamer but I guess I just disagree on the tradeoff aspect. As someone who used to be very obsessed with every aspect of gaming I am failing to see what a person is giving up by having more versatility and convenience as well as the games. The graphics will undoubtedly be very similar between both for 90 percent of the games. I like the controller better and I like the games lineup better to this point.

I am just not following on the tradeoffs. In my experience it has only improved a variety of entertainment activities. It is not like I had to give up equipment to use this, it simply makes navigating between them more seamless.

I don't see any tradeoffs with the Xbox either.  I think Ryse is the best looking and also the best launch title for both platforms.  Killzone is close but overall i think Ryse looks better.  Games like God of War and uncharted will show us the true capabilities of the ps4 and cross platform like the division will see what/if anything Microsoft sacrificed for their added features.  Personally I think it will be negligible.  And I just love games and am fortunate to be able to afford (well not really but who needs to eat) both of them.

XBOX floats XBOX demographic, PS4 floats PS4 demographic. I personally had one XBOX One and one PS4. I traded my PS4 for another XBOX One. PS4 and currently available games are not compelling enough to use even try to do split time with XBOX One. I just can't bring myself to do it. I tried, I tried and waited and tried but in the end, the current feature set, future exclusives are what got me the XBOX One.

Heck, even my friends who pre-ordered their PS4s and were all in Sony's camp are now trying to see if they can get an XBOX. They definitely missed the boat since they're similar in demographic. They have young kids, looking for more convenience vs. the most powerful machine out there. It's like going with an SUV vs. a Porsche while living in the city. I can do a lot more with my SUV like haul a chair and dresser or a twin bed for my daughter (TV, apps, games) and get in and out of the car easier (voice commands, media integration) vs. being able to go 5 seconds from stop light to stop light in luxurious leather, kick ass speaker system, tinted windows, sweet wheels etc. It's just different priority.

Ultimately, I think PS4 fanboys or basically anyone putting down XBOX peeps are missing the big picture but I can blame them. With age, sometimes comes wisdom. I thought this XBOX stuff was gimmicky garbage but once it was working how it was marketed to work, I was hooked. The convenience that it brings is in it of itself an enhancement in the overall experience.

I can unequivocally say that if I had opened the PS4 first that I wouldn't actually want to trade the other XBOX for another PS4. It's like what else can you do PS4? I'm waiting

I finally got a chance to rent that game. I am glad I did..it is much better than I expected and looks AMAZING! I am really loving the drivetar aspect on Forza as well and NBA looks photo realistic. Cool stuff.

I have two launch PS3's still going strong and definitely like both platforms but I am just not seeing a PS4 in my future. If you love to game PLUS you love AV components in general you are going to have fun playing around with this thing. I do not in any way want to put down the PS4 as it is undoubtedly a great gaming machine. I just feel like I ended up with quite a bit more bang for my buck without losing anything (at least until Uncharted comes out).

I don't think hardcore implies a gaming addiction but rather a dedication to gaming.

This can be a touchy subject however and every time it comes up there are people that get offended so it is probably a discussion best left off this forum. wink.gif

No worries from my end. I am still in shock I like the thing so much so I just felt compelled to give it a brag. As far as I am concerned the other stuff we were just trying to clarify meaning.

Oh man that is no good at all. My favorite moment is walking in the room and quietly saying "xbox on" and watching my Yamaha receiver, the directv box and my tv light up followed by "hello keith". I can't get enough of it. I have heard others have the same issue though. Hopefully that starts working for ya!

Its just picky.  It has worked first time, and sometimes i give up and use the controller.  I feel like overall its getting smarter.  My stand comes today to put it on top of the TV hopefully that helps.

No, you will be charged the regular price of $60. I would disable the auto renewal as you can find $35-$39 12 month deals regularly

BD, maybe you weren't trying to start anything but saying "Well, you're the target audience....a relatively light gamer that's more attracted by convenience than gaming excellence. I don't think it's so much that the hardcore are missing the point, they plainly see that they're not the priority and react accordingly" makes it sound like "gaming excellence" can't be achieved on the XB1. I would disagree with you 100% on that.

I was just thinking of the right word to describe putting gaming above all else. Maybe that wasn't the right word.

I really can't wait to see what Black Tusk is working on. Everyone forgets that MS has been scooping up talent lately and are working on lots of projects. If they are successful, they will hang around and make more games.

I currently own an X1 and plan to get a PS4 most likely Holiday 2013/early 2014.

I think the lack of quality (subjective, of course) PS4 launch titles is what may be behind some being disappointed. Of course, the same argument could be lobbied against the X1. It will probably be 2-3 years until we find out if one console ends up being superior, if there is a clear winner.

On the subject of the X1 and hardcore gamers, I think that many hardcore gamers feel that the X1 could have been so much better, hardware and spec-wise, if they hadn't focused so much on it being the center of the entertainment system. Many look at the Kinect as gimmicky for gaming, though it has many appreciated features outside of playing an actual game.

Much of the criticism against the X1 has been about the whole 720p/1080p issue. But, who's to know if these games would have been 1080p if MS hadn't focused so much on the Kinect and all the other apps and features. If MS is able to achieve a console that is great for gaming and has all these other interactive features, regardless if you use them or not, it's a win-win.

Right now it's way too early to say that the X1 failed, or is inferior to the PS4, as a gaming console. Much of that is in the hands of the game developers and not the console itself.

*EDIT - I meant Holiday 2014/early 2015 for PS4. No need for PS4 this early.

The other thing is now that these consoles are so much like computers features will be added.  Obviously the PS4 cannot do the whole tv thing without the hdmi in but who knows what features these two companies will come up with to fight each other.  I'm excited.
