DX12 solves the cross-compatibility question on the GPU side, and I'm pretty sure they already have a solution for arm/x86 translation. It's not as crazy as it sounds....a surface pro could definitely run titanfall. Not to mention an Xbox one could easily run full blown windows.

I think this is part of why they were so eager to get off of discs - cause most "Xbox devices" don't have disc drives.

That and it becomes pretty clear why they'd do why they did with the Xbox OS. Throw in the rumors of win8 app running on the Xbox and it becomes increasingly obvious where they're making their play. Their renewed "focus" on the pc seems a bit more cryptic now while also having another meaning. I wonder if they're in a position to announce anything at E3. This E3 seems to have more at stake than last years.

So it looks like all that selling off xbox doom and gloom that a few members have been posting was a bit premature. Glad to see that they want to turn the brand into an even bigger market.

I think that's exactly what they're waiting for. They keep saying it over and over. "We'll be able to talk about our plans for PC gaming in a few months, x1 controller support is coming in a few months, etc."

It could end up that the x1 is the endgame for the Xbox being a trojan horse to get a windows in your living room.

Tomorrow is the first day of build though, so we might get some hints of win 9 tomorrow.

I switched from a PC to console because I got tired of logging into a hacked server and finding out that I could not play very well. For me age is nothing. I know there have been a few hacks and cheats on all the console systems, but they are quickly removed and banned. If I am going to pay money to play on the Xbox live network, I expect to not run into any cheats. Besides, console on - line multiplayer has come a long way in the last many years. Just last night I was playing BF4 with 64 players and I could not even tell I was on a Console. The Xbox Live network is rock solid. This is what I like.

Coming from a PS3 and their network, I think Microsoft did an outstanding job with the Xbox One. I am actually coming around to Windows 8 OS. I personally think if Microsoft keeps working on the Xbox Live network experience, they will dominate. That is of they do not screw it up too bad.

They're not even that far off right now. Needs a few third party tools to make it work, but this what I get when I hit the xbox button on my PC:

Then I just use the dpad to pick a game and I'm in. Only prob is that it's impossible to set things up with just a controller, since the start screen/metro apps have zero native controller support. But if that's part of their new initiative, and they basically port over the xbox apps...it's going to be awesome for HTPCs.

With the Windows 8 Xbox games, yes. For the 'independent' ones, no.

Also, there are definitely Windows Store / Metro games that support a 360 controller (many of the Xbox-branded ones do, for example), but the point above still stands in general.

Yeah, the prob isn't the games itself, it's everything leading up to launching them. But that's a very solvable problem if MS has the desire.

The apps are a whole different story. I could launch the metro Netflix, and then enjoy staring at the login screen until I dig out a KB/mouse.

Interesting. I didn't even know "Xbox Games for Windows" was a thing (I'm pretty far removed from PC gaming at this point). The selection seems pretty limited right now, but it certainly seems to be a big step towards this future.

Yeah, this is the current front end:

Which bares more than a passing resemblance to the xbox one.

I'm looking forward to the integration suggested and described here.

I own stuff from all the major players and of course none of them integrate very well. Its especially frustrating when data integrity, security, and archiving are important to you.

One, common, uniform ecosystem is very appealing. That was never possible before. Real (grunt) work only gets done on one platform and "those guys" should take the lead.

Yeah, it's a pretty sad selection. They burned bridges with publishers and gamers alike with GFW. Hopefully they've learned a few lessons from that atrocity. tongue.gif

Its definitely an audacious and ambitious plan if they can get everything harmonized. I can easily see it becoming another gfwl too. Sony is hitting on all cylinders this gen so MS needs to get serious about their plan and they need to be clear with the message as well as quick with its implementation. Interesting times.

The elephant in the room is the XBL sub. Pay to play is as much of a non-starter on PC now as it was the last time they tried it. So if they make it free, that begs the question of why console owners need to pay when PC gamers don't.

That question was answered years ago. Console subscribers did not care then when they made the PC portion free before why would they care now? That was before they started giving games away for gold members.

I will gladly pay for my xbox live subscription and what it offers. I have since day 1. The real issue is now can/should you pay for 2?

I don't know anyone from last gen that did not own an Xbox + PS (thanks to a great blu-ray player).

That commitment is very debatable right now until the games justify it.

GFW was never a realistic alternative to an Xbox back then. But if they do merge them in look and feel, to the point where it's difficult to tell them apart...I dunno how well that'll sit.

Then again, they are still charging for Netflix, and it's not like Xbox one owners have a choice.

I cannot believe how appallingly bad the Xbox One implementation of DLNA is. I cannot get the Xbox to play *anything* but pre-transcoded MPEG-2 files. However, anything that's 1080p will not play as it will start stuttering/buffering within a minute of playing and then continue to do so. Mind you, this is a wired gigabyte connection.

Has anyone else had a different experience? I've tried Plex, Mezzmo, Serviio with the same results.

Billing this as an entertainment hub and then failing so badly on this front shows how M$ continues to lose the plot time and time again. This is the kind of stuff that they have the talent and resources to hit out of the park with ease, yet they fail miserably.

I shouldn't have to go buy something else to play these files after spending $500 on this machine.

I play downloaded videos almost every day from my computer to the Xbox One without much of an issue.

I've occasionally had an issue where DLNA wouldn't start playing automatically. The Video icon would pop up, and then it would jump back to the main homescreen. It was only after I went into Xbox Video that I would find out that the Video app first needed an update before I could use it.

Again, a pain it hasn't been updating these automatically for me, but once I update DLNA always works fine again (using a Windows 8 PC with "Play To").

Could you explain what types of files you're streaming?

MKV, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, etc?

Your posts aren't very helpful unless you describe what works and what doesn't.

did you guys see this video? it very closely matches the functionality described in the Fortaleza patents as well as the new patents that Microsoft acquired recently (well, purchased in November but didn't transfer until Jan 2014):

and here's a video from 2011 from that company that Microsoft bought the patents (probably bought for patent protection):

I never went from PC to console. Have always been both. Since the graphics and playability are close enough, I find it easier to use a console. I have used the MS adapter on my computer since the day it came out. Used Logitech joystick ,wheel, and flight stick before that. I have 12 major game titles on my computer right now plus a bunch of Steam cheapo's that I have yet to even try. This has been a stinker of a launch and I don't consider each that very powerful but it doesn't lessen the fun and interest I have in it. My main gripe with PC has always been the cheating that has ruined about every multiplayer game ever.

Just like Nvidia PC cards, the Xbox One refuses to output RGB 0-255 to Samsung TVs. Changing the setting from "Limited" to "Full" makes no difference at all. With Nvidia cards, I can force RGB 0-255 using a third party tool but obviously that's not possible with the Xbox One. I *do* have a "Dr HDMI" though so maybe I can do something with that.

Anyone managed to get RGB 0-255 working with a Samsung TV?

EDIT: Please ignore. It was my Denon receiver's fault.

Using mobile.HD on Windows 8 with the "Play To" function to remux MKV files on the fly.

Apparently the preview update is adding SmartGlass TV controls and cable box DVR controls:

http://www.engadget.com/2014/04/01/xbox-one-tv-update-smartglass-dvr/

That's great, but until it can learn codes from an external remote (in the case of unsupported hardware like my Sherbourn receiver) it's still useless to me. Soo if anyone who gets the preview update wants to suggest that learning functionality, it'd be much appreciated. biggrin.gif
