This is something I've been wondering but never asked. I have a 7.1 receiver but it's hooked up in a 5.1 configuration. Should I set the xbox up to sent 5.1 (assuming it's mapping the channels correctly) or should I send 7.1 and let the receiver do the conversion?

aaronwt's Avatar aaronwt 04:39 PM 07-20-2014
AFAIk it doesn't affect 5.1 setups. And I'm not really sure how it could since there are only two surround speakers in a 5.1 setup while there are four in a 7.1 setup.

I only know that with a 7.1 setup, even if I set the output to 5.1, with the apps and HDMI input, the audio is still erroneously coming out of the rear surround channels.

Dance Central Spotlight launches Sept 2 for $9.99

And any songs that were previously purchased for the three Dance Central titles on Xbox 360 will be available free for Spotlight owners, once Harmonix brings those tracks to Xbox One.

Of course, that's not the only audio issue with the X1, the other equally annoying issue is that it sends everything with a predetermined number of audio channels regardless of the source audio. For example, if the X1 is set to 7.1, the X1 will output everything in a 7.1 wrapper, such that if the source has less than 7.1 channels the additional channels will be sent as blank channels prohibiting the AVR from applying very useful post-processing like DPLIIx (e.g. to matrix 2.0 stereo into 7.1).

I can't believe that this issue has flown under the radar to the extent that it has, even a test of the X1 by Home Theater magazine didn't identify/mention this issue.

Anyone besides me upset about the Xbox Entertainment division getting axed by Microsoft. I was looking forward to new innovative and interactive shows than what is offered via major networks. Maybe in the future when the Xbox one sales are up......

It's not like there's a shortage of TV productions out there though.

Unless this move gets them closer to a real price cut I do not see how offering less original content is a good thing.

I was hoping for a more interactive programing for only the xbox one, something that no one will do as it is too expensive and too difficult to keep the experiences the same for all devices. That is why exclusivity was key in the development of these shows. To be able to "play" alongside a tv show would be pretty awesome, but alas too many feel the way you guys do and the marketshare goes to the demand not innovation.

To be clear I think on the face of I think cutting the studio is a bad idea. It will only be a good idea if this lead directly to a lower price Xbox One.

I still think we are plenty of innovation in store for the Xbox One. They have already detailed the upcoming Twitter integration. Cortona could be a game changer if Microsoft still has the vision to execute it with Apps on the Xbox One. Gamescon could be a big convention for Microsoft to outline the future of the Xbox Live platform. They are launching in new territories, and they may need an additional splash to boost that launch.

So the great PC/Phone/Xbox unification is happening next year.

"This means one operating system that covers all screen sizes," Nadella said to analysts on the quarterly conference call. "We will streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes."

He explained, "In the past we had multiple teams working on different versions of Windows. Now we have one team with a common architecture. This allows us to scale, create Universal Windows Apps."

And the company will "unify our stores, our commerce and developer platforms," Nadella promised.

Guess we'll see how that works out. Sounds good in theory.

Mary Jo Foley has a good breakdown what One OS means.

In a nutshell, the underlying platform is being unified, but there will still be various SKUs with different capabilities.

So a desktop/business focused SKU might skip the full screen metro interface and feature the new smart menu instead. Whereas a phone/tablet/TV focused SKU wouldn't have a desktop at all. And of course there will have to be a "kitchen sink" SKU that does it all for hybrids like the surface.

It's likely that you'll be able to upgrade in place like older versions of windows...so I wonder if they'll allow you to upgrade the Xbox to support a desktop? That'll be kind of crazy, but it's theoretically possible.

I looked at the patch notes.

Enabling 3D Blu-ray. An update to the Blu-ray player app will enable 3D Blu-ray functionality on Xbox One. This isn't in yet, but we will let you know when it arrives.

Damn. I just completed the system update but yep, there was no update for the Blu-ray app. Popped in a 3D movie just for kicks, no luck. Oh well, hope it's not much longer.

As my games and apps lists both grow (and also, I think these things would be important for people without Kinect- I work around most of them by using voice commands myself)... is it just me or is the "My Games and apps" section terribly designed?

First of all, the way it's separated into sections is terrible. The Games Apps and Queue headers should be at the top of the page, like the main homescreen, and you should be able to switch between them with LB/RB, like the main home screen. The way it is now, it's a pain to switch between games and apps, and the column on the size wastes space. If they want to leave the page up / page down functionality in, it should be LT and RT for consistency (LB/RB currently do different things on the home screen and in the My games/apps section).

Second, we really should be able to resize the tiles or at least enable an option to show more (like is possible in Windows 8.1).

And finally, where's the jump list button so that I can skip to a certain letter (like the Xbox Music app does, for example)?

It's just like nobody really thought about what would happen once you get more than ten or so things installed.

Well, at least it's better than the PS4.

Seriously though, where do you find the time to play all these games? I can't even fathom how you have time to turn your Xbox on considering you own like the entire steam library.

But yeah, the win 8 start menu is awesome for organizing games. I'm surprised you can't do the same on Xbox too.

Strangely enough, half of the Steam ones, I don't. It's a problem. I've actually been trying to not buy much new on Steam unless it's deeply discounted lately, but we'll see how that goes.

I see with the new update you can finally use Kinect and your voice to navigate around the settings menus. So that is a nice improvement.

Yes but still limited in some areas like for example Network in settings Set up wireless network and Advanced settings do not have voice. But glad it is finally here.

What dafuq???

I even enabled 'Allow 3D' playback under display & sound. The app has to be updated? Would have been nice to know when that was planned to happen :/

To be fair, even Major Nelson's original post said that 3D Blu-ray would require a Blu-ray player app update.
