It was marketed abysmally, and the implementation was sub-par, but one thing Microsoft had right in their initial announcement is that being input 1 is the goal for any box in the living room. Unfortunately, the Xbox just doesn't fit that as well as it used to. Performance is only getting worse, the streaming content selection has been stagnant, and that sort of usage is just no longer part of Microsoft's vision. I doubt they spend much time at all making that better. Which means that other devices are going to keep being other people's 'input 1.' But it (I should note I'm only talking here about the current model and software changes and inefficiences) is incrementally better as a gaming-only device, which is the market that Microsoft is desperately trying to win back.
Yep, I dont want to have to constantly switch between devices. The rest of my family is retarded when it comes to this stuff, even with a harmony. The less devices I have to switch between the better. I don't think netflix is the problem here. If it was just one of them, then it's the app's problem. If it's all of them, it's the operating system's problem. It's got 8 gigabytes of ram there's no excuse for not being able to keep a few apps cached when a 512mb mobile phone can do it. At first I figured it was because they threw together the original xbox one OS in a hurry, and once they moved to windows 10/UWP apps that those problems would be mostly solved. But correct me if I'm wrong, but it's on Win10 now and the apps are basically the Win10 versions?

even if it is a windows 10 version, they may still be running the same code based as before, in other words they didn't optimize it to take advantage of the system.

there's another aspect. The Scorpio will be the first DX12 console from the OS to the hardware. The Xbox One didn't get DX12 until late and the hardware didn't have all DX12 features. It was more DX11+.

DX11 turned out to be a major mistake with the heavy overhead. DX12 is pretty close to the metal.

More than anything else though I just have a hard time understanding how a $300 console can take ten times as long to launch Netflix than a $30 tablet. Like it's obviously a software issue and it doesn't really inspire confidence that it won't get even slower over the next few years. Once they crossbuy stuff becomes commonplace it might make a lot more sense for me to buy, but not if basic living room stuff is so ridiculously slow that even my wife complains about it. Like I don't think I own a single device that comes close to taking that long to launch a media app. Even a 5 year old iPhone 3GS is under 10 seconds.
Where is this 20+ second number coming from? On the XBOne I just tested Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, and Hulu. I alternated between them and tried launching each app three times. The shortest loading time was eight seconds. The longest loading time was fourteen seconds. With most launches somewhere in between. I didn't see anything near a twenty second loading time.

Someone mentioned it a couple pages back. I remember the last time I tried netflix on an xbox one it took 45 seconds, no exaggeration. If theyre down to 8 thats a pretty good improvement but still not where it needs to be.

I also see where they have a place to design your own controller. So now I need to pay $20 extra to be able to get a newer Black controller with BT and the proprietary 2.4Ghz RF?

If you design it. I'm sure they'll sell standard black controllers with BT for $60. I don't see anything wrong with charging a premium for a custom controller.

So far I only see the new controllers in white. Like the console. I haven't heard anything mentioned about a black controller or black console.

Black is beautiful, son. My television with its thin black bezel sits atop a black cabinet full of black components (AVR, Xboxes, PS3, Roku 3, BDP, HDMI switch). In the dark it all disappears, ceasing to visually distract me from what's on the screen, all except the ugly off white enclosure of my TiVo Bolt.

I don't remember where I read or heard it but they did say there would be a black one but they were not sure if it would be matte or glossy. I think it was on one of paul thurrot's pod casts.

Thurrott is so funny. On the latest podcast, he got so many details wrong about so many Xbox One things. And he must have been pulling so much from nowhere, mentioning that one of the big problems with the Xbox One was how loud it was and how the Xbox One S would fix that (even though he didn't actually attend E3 and it's impossible to hear that it's silent on the loud show floor). He talked about the PS4 also being $299 and he's never mentioned how the PS4 is like a jet compared to the Xbox.

I don't think anyone has mentioned if the Xbox One S was silent because it wasn't possible to verify at an event like E3. One of the Microsoft guys mentioned that the increased venting allowed them to have a smaller fan but not be louder but no one was able to confirm. The massive fan on the current Xbox One allowed super slow revolutions for silence. Reminds me of my Noctua fans on my PC.

MS gets things wrong (albeit often...), but the cooling and noise of the current Xbox One is not one of their missteps.

List of reasons the XB1 is my go-to console over the PS4 (I have and use both):
  • low noise/sufficient cooling
  • great feeling controller
  • IR port for universal remote
Those three are much greater than the minor visual upgrade of the PS4 - which I barely notice, if at all. Both systems are pretty much on visual fidelity parity these days, IMO.

The only strike I give against the current XB1 console is the occasional controller disconnect, which is sounds like they are addressing in the future hardware revisions.

Anyone looking for XBox Gift cards for sale? Staples has a deal for a $50 Xbox eGift card for $40. With supposedly a limit of three.

http://www.staples.com/Microsoft-Xbo...roduct_1977991

I ordered three and then placed another order of three. Both orders went through but I have no idea if I will get the second order. It says they will email them with in a day.

Agreed. my Xbox One is way more quiet than my PS4. Now and then I can hear the fan speed up on the One, but never for a sustained period of time unlike my PS4.

26 seconds after a fresh reboot here. Of course, this Xbox is currently on a preview build, but that number falls in line with my experiences over the past year in general.

In fairness to Thurrott, he said he has 3 Xbox Ones and can hear all of them. One of them had a loud power brick. He was talking from personal knowledge. He might just be unlucky, but he did say that he might have "dog" (or animal) super hearing. For the record, mine is silent as well. In fact I can hear my external 7200 hdd, which irritates me. His Microsoft coverage has been very fair over the years. I would never accuse him of having an axe to grind. Ill take him at his word. It's unfortunate for him that his experience does not match ours, but I cannot deny what he feels/hears.

I can easily hear my XBOnes. Or any XBOne I've seen. But I would not call them loud. But I can also hear the fan from any DVR from over fifteen feet away too. Of course all of this is in a quiet room. DUring normal use with the voulme up you don't normally hear these. Not like you can with the loudness of the PS4 when it ramps ups during game play. I certainly hope the loudness levels of the XBOne S is just as quiet.

As far as hearing a noise from the power supply. If the power supply was making a noise then it should have been replaced. I've had power supplies form other devices in the past that had these issues. But once they were replaced, with one working properly, they were quiet.

It's funny, I can't hear any of my systems, XBO, PS4, or Wii U. They're all pretty quiet unless a disc spins up to read briefly.

Yeah, I have never complained about noise from any console (ok the PS3 Fat almost had me complaining) or even my projector with bulb on high.

That or I am too old and going deaf.

My launch model Xbox 360 sounded like it had a Briggs and Stratton engine in it; it was like listening to a lawn mower. Somehow it survived and I traded it in on a Jasper Elite which was considerably quieter but still quite audible. I sold that to my housemate and bought a 360 S (w/Kinect, which I'd wanted to try). I thought that was nearly silent until I got my Xbox One, which I cannot hear in a quiet room (unless I go and squat down to get my ear to within a couple of feet of it). It'll be interesting to see what the Xbone S is like, with its compact case and internal PSU. I know that the Xbone's big case is so that they can ventilate it with a big slow fan.

My launch model PS3 Fat is pretty noisy, particularly when it starts running hot. In normal circumstances it's bearable. There haven't been any exclusives that I've wanted to play on PS4 until recently, so I haven't bothered to buy one.

HOW TO GET IT

• If your console is in Instant-On mode, it will download and install the update and reboot to standby.

• NOTE: Once the update is available, you can manually begin the update by navigating to Settings > System and selecting System Update.

• If your console hasn’t downloaded and installed the update by 1:00AM PDT 6/22/2016, you will be prompted to do so at that time.

DETAILS

OS version released: rs1_xbox_rel_1606.160616-1800
Available: 6:00PM PDT 6/20 (1:00AM GMT 21/6)

Thanks for helping us test the latest Xbox One update! We’re eager to show off the new features and experiences we’ve been working on. We’ve noted below a few important things be aware of before you jump in.

• Certain content (games, apps, DLC) purchased in the new Store may only be available on consoles enrolled in the latest Preview update. This means…
• Games purchased on a console running the latest Preview update can only be played on that console or other consoles running the latest Preview update.
• Games purchased via Xbox.com can be played on any console.
• Games purchased on a console running the previous update can be played on any console.

• Certain parental control features aren’t functioning appropriately in the current build. As a result, we encourage users to exercise caution when letting children access a console that is using the latest Xbox One update until these issues are resolved.

• We’ve added several settings that are already found on Windows today. These include SmartScreen Filter, which sends URLs you visit in apps to Microsoft to check against a list of potentially harmful sites, and advertising ID, which helps Microsoft present you with more personalized ads in Universal Windows Apps. You can choose to turn these off and manage your preferences for how Xbox One uses your information in Settings.

NEW FEATURES

• Language Independence
Based on overwhelming fan feedback, we’ve enabled Language Independence to give you even more choices over your Xbox experience and how you engage with your Xbox One. Language Independence gives you the freedom to choose any supported language on Xbox One, regardless of your location.

Please try out this capability and give us your feedback. If you encounter any issues, change your language and location settings back to their previous values to see if the issue still exists. We look forward to your feedback.

• Game Pre-orders
When purchasing a game pre-order, funds may no longer be deducted from your account immediately (depending on when the game pre-order is purchased). Pre-order funds will now be deducted from your account 10 days or less prior to the game’s release date.

FIXES

• My Games & Apps
Resolved an issue which sometimes caused game and app installations to get stuck in the Queue and fail to install.

• Xbox Universal Store
• When attempting to purchase In Between in the Store, the Store page no longer displays an error.
• Resolved an issue which caused free content for Xbox Live Gold subscribers to fail to display.

• Blu-Ray Player
The Blu-Ray Player app should no longer fail to play discs after an app update.

• Cortana
• Resolved an issue which could sometimes cause poor speech recognition.
• YouTube, Netflix, OneGuide, and other apps should now be more reliable with See-It-Say-It.
• You can now say “Stop Listening” without saying “Hey Cortana” after using See-It-Say-It.
• OneStore no longer crashes when started from a Cortana voice search.
• Resolved an issue which could sometimes cause Cortana to crash when being snapped.
• Asking Cortana about a friend’s online status now brings up the friend’s profile rather than the friend list.
• There is now a confirmation for launching apps. When Cortana is snapped she will indicate what she is going to launch, allowing you to cancel. Cortana’s responses are also no longer shortened (allowing you to know exactly what is being launched).
• Cortana’s “Listening…” should now appear more quickly after signing in.

• EA Access
• EA Access vault titles should now be available to install from the corresponding Store page.
• You should now be able to purchase the EA Access Hub from the Store.

• Screen Dimming
Resolved an issue which could cause the screen to dim in numerous apps.

CURRENT KNOWN ISSUES

TOP ISSUES

• Xbox Universal Store
Sometimes when purchasing content from the Store, the store interface will appear zoomed in when confirming payment information.
Workaround: Quit and relaunch the Store, then complete the purchase.

GENERAL ISSUES

• Xbox Universal Store
• At this time it's not possible to redeem a 5x5 code for Xbox Live Gold on the console. Please use Xbox.com or another console not enrolled in the latest Xbox One update to redeem a 5x5 code for Xbox Live Gold.
• You may be unable to buy, rent, or play certain movies or TV shows from the Store (the purchase button may not appear on the Store page). Please buy or rent from the Windows Store on a Windows 10 device or from the online Microsoft Store (http://www.microsoft.com/store/movies-and-tv) and the content will appear in the collection of your Xbox One’s Movies & TV app. The Xbox Video app can be used to purchase content on Windows 8.X/RT PCs and tablets and on Windows Phone 8.X devices. Windows XP, Vista, and 7.X users will need to purchase content from the online Microsoft Store.
• When purchasing in-game currencies, the currencies sometimes fails to appear in-game. Games impacted include World of Tanks, Overwatch, and Call of Duty: Black Ops III.
• Store pages for purchased games and apps sometimes still show a “Buy” button rather than an “Install” button. If you encounter this issue, please submit feedback via Report a problem.
• The Coming Soon section is not currently available in the Store, and will be enabled in a future update.

• Movies & TV
When launching Movies & TV and attempting to play a video, the menu may obstruct part of the screen.

• Instant-On Mode
In Instant-On mode, when the console enters connected standby, game and app installations in progress may fail to continue installing.

• Payments and Billing
At this time it's not possible to add, edit, or remove payment options on the console. Please use Xbox.com or another console not enrolled in Redstone to manage payment options.

• Profile
At this time it's not possible to purchase a Gamertag change on the console. Please use Xbox.com or another console not enrolled in the latest Xbox One update to change your Gamertag.

• Cortana
• Cortana may take a longer than expected amount of time to use commands like slow, pause, play, mute, and take screenshot.
• Cortana may occasionally fail to recognize a command and direct you instead to a web search.
• Sometimes Cortana reports a poor network connection, when the network connection is fine.
• When Cortana is “Thinking…” sometimes the sound effect continues to loop.
• When using “Hey Cortana Turn Off”, sometimes she fails to recognize “Yes” or “No” to turn off the console.
• Searching the OneStore via Cortana sometimes causes her to search the same keyword multiple times.
• See-It-Say-It sometimes fails to turn on when first launching an app, but will turn on after using a voice command from within the app.
• Cortini sign-in prompts may incorrectly occur when trying to launch an app while not signed in.
• Cortana may fail to launch Skype, Groove, and the Movies & TV app.

• Pins
• After downloading an app update, the app and all associated content pins will become unpinned from the dashboard. This only occurs once for each app after downloading the latest Xbox One update.
• Pinning content from within apps (TV shows, etc.) is no longer supported.

• My Games & Apps
You may encounter an error when attempting to load Ready to Install with a large number of digital games and apps.

• Microsoft Edge
While playing a video, pressing the left thumbstick to enter full screen mode causes Microsoft Edge to crash.
Workaround: Use the on-screen full screen button to enter full screen mode.
