After owning my system for a few years I finally decide to try Live last week. I only have a few games and so far I've just been playing Modern Warfare 3 and World at War online. Not surprisingly I'm terrible at both, but I'm having fun.

My system is plugged into a 5.1 receiver and speakers, so thats where all my sound comes from. I don't hear any other players talking at all during multiplayer games and I have a few questions about that.
-Is that because I don't have my own headset?
-What speaker(s) should I be hearing team communication from?
-Are people talking to me and I'm not hearing them?
-Is there a setting to enable audio I'm missing? I see where I can select mute for players

If I had a headset I wouldn't want a big over the ears thing - I'm happy with my speakers now. I assume that would work given I saw a few bluetooth style ear pieces in the headset forum.

Also, as much as I want to be able to talk to others is it really worth it? Everything I've read about online communication seems to lament that its full of 13 year old bigots.

Under the system settings on the Xbox (not in the games), you can choose whether chat comes through your speakers or headset. It might be set to not play through the speakers. As to where it comes from, I would assume center channel?

As for is it worth it... ummmmmm, probably not. Unless you're playing with friends, most of the chat isn't helpful or welcome. But YMMV. I sometimes have had good convos on Xbox Live, but playing a popular shooter means you're much more likely to run into a troll.

Cool I'll look for that setting tonight.

I might look into a lightweight little headset then. One that I can hear both my speakers and the voices in the set.

Then again maybe I don't want to hear what anyone else is saying about me smile.gif

yes, the chat will be from the center channel. At least it is in my 7.1 and 5.1 setups.

I usually run mine with chat going to my surround setup and I have the headset around my neck so I only use the microphone on it. I rarely use the Kinect microphone for in game chat .

as others have mentioned, it really depends on the settings that you used.

for me, when I am not using my headset, the sound comes straight from the TV speakers; but if I have my headset plugged in, then of course the sound will come from the headset.
