You really can't screw up someone's session, unless they're trying to do something specific (maybe rack up a huge combo).

Go for it. I'll send you a friend request, so feel free to message me if you see me online and want to give it a shot.

if you see me on and want to play the ryse co-op, I'm game. you'll have to carry me as I'm pretty terrible at the game. I still don't know what most of the things do. I know the health. doing focus is to get the ability to slam your shield down for slow-mo? strength confuses me. so you choose the strength perk, do the execution and then your hits afterward are more powerful?

I assume that you refer to the Damage perk. (The others are XP, Focus and Health). You got it right. The only problem is if your Damage factor gets too high it becomes easy to kill enemies before they can be executed.

In the gladiator game you have a choice of patron gods, each having a different focus power and a different perk (you can't dynamically select one).

Jupiter's perk is Focus and his focus power is slo-mo (These all have fancy names but I don't remember them). Focus powers only affect enemies in your immediate vicinity--be aware that you can invoke slo-mo but far off enemies who are unaffected can sneak up on you. The nice thing about Jupiter is that his perk is Focus, so you can use his power to beat up on helpless enemies which gives you more and more focus so you can continuously invoke it. I got a combo up to 169 once using that (hits without being hit or the combo timing out); it takes a little luck and a lot of boasting between waves to keep the combo going.

Mars' perk is Damage and his focus power is a sort of an area blast; it leaves nearby enemies damaged. Usually minions hit by that power only need to be hit with shield or gladius once to become executable; dual-weapon and shielded guys are damaged, but need a little more work.

Apollo's perk is Health and his focus power is also slo-mo (it's called something different from Jupiter's but it seems the same). Since you don't gain focus nearly as fast it's more difficult to milk for long combos.

Diana's perk is XP and her focus power is a sort of "force push"; your enemies are blasted away from you. It can be deadly if they're standing next to a pit or a spiked wall or column or if they get pushed onto a trap. It's my least favorite since it does relatively little damage. It does look cool biggrin.gif.

Gear matters a lot. As you go through rounds your rank increases and gradually opens up higher tiers of equipment for purchase. At this point I'm equipped with mostly tier 5 and 4 stuff; I have many extra Health and Focus bars and a ton of Health and Focus enhancements (I think my current gladius has a 50% focus amount increase). I haven't bothered much with XP and crowd pleasing enhancements.

I don't really understand the benefit of XP. In most RPGs it can be used to selectively level up attributes but you can't really do that in this game.

It's funny, I've used the Diana perk almost exclusively since I unlocked the other god items, and love it. I love angling between certain obstacles to push people into them - and when there are archer challenges I go up top and wait for as many to fill the small space and BOOM - her push will send all 10-15 people over the edge. smile.gif

I recently tried the other perks to help try to boost my combo score (which worked, thank you, I'm able to 100+ now!), but I found that the other perks make the co-op/solo much easier. I had no idea how unbalanced they were, but with Jupiter it's pretty much rinse and repeat, it almost feels like you're invincible.

I'm with you on the XP. Even though you level up, you don't get anything from it (other than unlocking the 5 tiers of weapons/armor/potions). I think I'm around level 70-75 right now, but I haven't purchased any booster packs in a while so I still only have +5% on some of my attributes. Even with that, I rarely ever get concerned about making it through the level.

I do hope they eventually find a way to ramp up the difficulty with the level of your character.

I do that all of the time. I avoid crawling up on the archers' platforms until I have enough focus (from any of the gods), then let everyone climb up there with me. It's fun to blast them all off with Diana's power but it wastes execution opportunities and the gains in Focus, Health, Damage and XP that you get when you perform them. The same goes for "force pushing" them into pits, spiked surfaces and other traps. Mars' high Damage boosts can be annoying because I end up killing opponents (mostly minions) before they can be executed.

This is true. I generally stop invoking Jupiter's focus power when I'm down to 4 or 5 enemies when it becomes more of a fair fight.

My rank is 172. I'm wearing all Tier 5 gear (unlocks at rank 90) except for some Tier 4 gauntlets because they give me 2 additional Focus capsules. My attributes are:

  • Crowd Bonus: 1%
  • XP Gain: 2%
  • Health Regen: 52%
  • Health Amount: 30%
  • Health Capsules: +1
  • Focus Gain: 100%
  • Focus Amount: 20%
  • Focus Capsules: +3
  • Inventory: 4 Pilas

I used to wear one of the cover outfits (mostly Commodus' golden get up), but now I let the gear that I'm wearing show so that I look more like an actual gladiator.

I finally finished the single player and hope they decide on a sequel. I must say it was frustrating at times where it seemed so hard to get thru a certain area but then when I played next time I would make it thru the same area the first try. Usually a game would get the best of me and once frustrated, I hardly ever went back. Always moving on to the next game. Haven't decided about multi-player as I am not very good at these types of games with my old age and slow reflexes. Love to play golf on the 360 and have many friends there to play plus it is the kind of game where you don't mind just dropping in on a game with a stranger. But I am not ready to trade this game in and may decide to give multi a try or play it at the next difficulty level. Or maybe look for the single player achievements as I never really tried to find all the scrolls and other items. Seems like a lot to get from the game still. Definitely made it worth a buy.

Your focus and health regen is nuts!

How is the game at that level with that much % increases? Do you ever die? I don't think I'm very good at the game, especially judging by my combo numbers, but I still rarely die. I play with a friend I know most of the time, and we were talking while gaming worrying a bit about that. We've seen all the executions, and are starting to half-ass and blowing through the rounds. We're hoping more maps come out that include a much higher difficulty to get through. I remember when we were playing the DL content with the Hades level, and after rolling through the waves "Hades" himself came out...and I stood back while my friend took him out without issue. We were really hoping for some nice, challenging, "wow is this hard!" moments.

I haven't died in a long time. I think that the last time it happened I unintentionally climbed up on an archers' platform without any focus and couldn't get down before it filled up with guys who wailed on me constantly from all sides, making it impossible to block more than a minor percentage of the blows. The only other time health is ever an issue is if I screw up and let two or three of the Barbarian Leaders simultaneously hit me with heavy attacks.

I still haven't played co-op, having no actual friends with the game and hating to play with randoms. It's not very interesting playing the same three solo maps over and over, but there's something oddly soothing about it biggrin.gif.

I finally got around to finishing the campaign! I hated that final scorpio segment repelling the barbarians at the gate so very much that it had a hard time slogging through it. Seems like I'd spend 10 minutes listening to Vitallion screaming, "Marius! Do this!" and "Marius! Don't do that!" and then fail the mission. I'd rather smash my thumb in a steel door rolleyes.gif.

I liked the way that it ended. The final scenes were just visually stunning as was most of the game. It was a good game, which I think could have been a great one with the addition of some puzzle solving and platforming elements. I'm definitely going to play it over at a higher difficulty level.

I started the game over on Centurion difficult; I probably should have selected Legendary. Recall that I somehow glossed over how to perform executions until I read about it in a review about 82% through the campaign; it's orders of magnitude easier to play with executions and a full knowledge of the play mechanics. When I restarted, it let me keep all of my acquired skill upgrades and executions, which is to say, all of the available skill upgrades and executions, so I have nothing to purchase with valor biggrin.gif. It's required me to pause to upgrade a few times; I immediately re-enter the game.

I've played through to the second half of storming the beach at Britannia (the assault on the catapult tower). It only took about an hour, so I may restart on Legendary, skipping all of the cut scenes it allows me to. I can't see where Centurion difficulty is much harder than Soldier difficulty was; the enemies might be a little less fragile and recover more quickly from executable state.

I did start over on Legendary difficulty--definitely more challenging smile.gif. All of the enemies perform more frequent heavy attacks and they're all much less fragile. It takes a minimum of two pilas to kill anyone (three for shielded guys), though the first handily places them into executable state, so you can pepper an oncoming group with pilas and then immediately start executing them when they get close enough. Thankfully the quick-throw mechanism seems to work a lot better. The precision aiming works less well, requiring you to expose yourself for longer when taking out archers from afar. It all makes the game a lot more fun, particularly if you've mastered the combat mechanisms and have memorized large numbers of execution sequences biggrin.gif.

I agree. Having beat it on legendary I believe it is the "truest" experience. I think the lower difficulty levels do a disservice to how much fun the game is. When you have to actually pay attention to which focus power you are using and also avoid or deflect most attacks it really is much more than a simple button masher even though the combat is deceptively simple.

As I stated, I got through 82% of the campaign on Soldier difficult before I learned how to perform executions, somehow having glossed over the lesson given in the beginning (occasionally triggering one by accident). It would not be possible on Legendary, even with all of the skill upgrades (which I have).

Definitely not. The heals you get from executions in legendary are still barely enough to keep up with the occasional hit. Legendary was a lot of fun but also quite frustrating in several areas. Learning to quick throw spears is something that helps a lot in several areas. That first tower on the beach where you have to kill the archers is very difficult without quick throw.

I have no idea how I'd survive some of the fights on Legendary. I should've paid attention more to the tutorials. On the lower difficulties, you don't even have to use the perfect blocks until the end of the game and then all of a sudden, you're "oh #*$&!" and you have to start learning. I didn't even know about the shield thing until 2/3 through the game.

It's very difficult with quick-throws rolleyes.gif.

Has the left bumper every triggered "Fire Volley" for anyone? I always have to call it out verbally, though it says that left bumper will do it on screen.

I started replaying on Legendary having played through on Soldier and played hundreds of rounds of solo gladiator; I have all of the skill upgrades. I salute those who started the game on Legendary with nothing and got through it. Getting through the beginning of this game on Legendary with a couple of health and focus capsules and minimum amounts, gains and focus duration would be hell.

the holding the bumper just takes way too long so voice commands is the only fast way to do it. there's no reason to make you hold the bumper for so long but it did make the voice commands completely the superior option.

I guess that I didn't read that carefully--I didn't realize that you had the hold the bumper. I've just been pressing it briefly, which does nothing.

I'm working through my Legendary play through with a mostly leveled up character. And I believe "hell" is not a strong enough word eek.gif

I'm stuck on "Kill the Archers". There seems to be nothing for it but to try, try again until you get efficient enough with pila to kill enough archers to get through. None of the game guide walk-throughs of the section that I've found have been particularly helpful. It makes you sit through a 30-second cut-scene over and over as punishment for failure rolleyes.gif.

This was a tough spot for me too. I looked online and found a walkthrough where the player did a quick release technique that I never used. I always held until it went red and then released, instead he did the quick tap and toss, which worked.

I gave it a shot and it took 2 or 3 tries (and both were closer than I'd ever done before, so I knew it would work right away) to get through that part.

Give that a shot, hopefully it'll help.

Thanks, but I'd already come to the conclusion that quick-throws were going to be the answer. Standing close enough to the archers that quick-throws always hit is the key; c.kingsley alluded to that a few posts back:

I've been standing next to that endless pile of pilas behind my guys and throwing to kill the archers on the corner above them and to the left. Again I figure that it's one of those "try, try again until you get it right" situations. I have to remind myself to move back to my position if I get knocked back by an arrow.

I'm still struggling with this stupid "Kill the Archers" sequence. The sad thing is that three times I got to the point where it put up the "Fire Volley" prompt and called out the command just as it told me that the I failed after which my archers fired the volley, killing all of the enemy archers rolleyes.gif. Once the prompt came up several seconds before the failure one and I called out the command four times without it paying attention to me. It's a warm day here so I had a floor fan blowing on me; I re-calibrated Kinect with the fan on. Now I start chanting "fire volley" when it gets close to that point biggrin.gif.

It is teaching me some pila technique and good arrow deflection timing. Unfortunately there's not much fine control of quick-throw; it seems to want to attack the last guy who fired an arrow at you, even if he's taken cover, wasting shots.

It seems that the game got tired of me retrying that sequence and let me go on biggrin.gif. The final time was one of those where it accepted my "fire volley" command before telling me that I failed.

Permanent price drop for digital version to 39.99 starting end of February. That's what I'm talking about. I might have trade in my copy to gamestop now and go digital.

$39.99 is not a permanent drop, just from February 18 to 24. Good deal though...
