I assume that you refer to the Damage perk. (The others are XP, Focus and Health). You got it right. The only problem is if your Damage factor gets too high it becomes easy to kill enemies before they can be executed.
In the gladiator game you have a choice of patron gods, each having a different focus power and a different perk (you can't dynamically select one).
Jupiter's perk is Focus and his focus power is slo-mo (These all have fancy names but I don't remember them). Focus powers only affect enemies in your immediate vicinity--be aware that you can invoke slo-mo but far off enemies who are unaffected can sneak up on you. The nice thing about Jupiter is that his perk is Focus, so you can use his power to beat up on helpless enemies which gives you more and more focus so you can continuously invoke it. I got a combo up to 169 once using that (hits without being hit or the combo timing out); it takes a little luck and a lot of boasting between waves to keep the combo going.
Mars' perk is Damage and his focus power is a sort of an area blast; it leaves nearby enemies damaged. Usually minions hit by that power only need to be hit with shield or gladius once to become executable; dual-weapon and shielded guys are damaged, but need a little more work.
Apollo's perk is Health and his focus power is also slo-mo (it's called something different from Jupiter's but it seems the same). Since you don't gain focus nearly as fast it's more difficult to milk for long combos.
Diana's perk is XP and her focus power is a sort of "force push"; your enemies are blasted away from you. It can be deadly if they're standing next to a pit or a spiked wall or column or if they get pushed onto a trap. It's my least favorite since it does relatively little damage. It does look
Gear matters a lot. As you go through rounds your rank increases and gradually opens up higher tiers of equipment for purchase. At this point I'm equipped with mostly tier 5 and 4 stuff; I have many extra Health and Focus bars and a ton of Health and Focus enhancements (I think my current gladius has a 50% focus amount increase). I haven't bothered much with XP and crowd pleasing enhancements.
I don't really understand the benefit of XP. In most RPGs it can be used to selectively level up attributes but you can't really do that in this game.
