so, impressions of the game itself: it's good but not great. I'm a huge halo and bungie fan (halo is what caused me to buy an xbox, my first console since the NES), so of course i'm comparing them.
The differences between destiny and halo are all fine in terms of control. i'm so used to COD style that it took a while to realize that it was using it.
The boss battles were tedious. The missions are way too linear and unengaging (it feels like doing side missions in oblivion after I’ve already spent 200 hours exploring). and there is just no sense of wonder and alien mystery like there is with halo...at least not yet.
it's like in halo they put the focus on the story, but here they put the focus on creating addictive gameplay. so i may spend a lot of hours on it (it is fun), in 10 years i won't be holding by breath for the Destiny 1-4 collection.
I will say, the more I went deeper into buildings, the thought that there might be something really cool down there, or on the other planets, was exciting. Especially if there are places I can’t go NOW, but I can come back to in a few levels…it’s quite a tease. this is bungie after all, and the flood twist in H1 just blew my mind. i expect they've got something up their sleeves.
But if all I find down there is another generic boss that I have to pump bullets into for 20 minutes, I’ll be hugely disappointed. i'm not a fan of bosses at all, but at least the bosses in say dark souls are ridiculously unique. But all the halos (except for 2) did great without boss battles, just by taking the standard encounter components and building really nice setpieces with lots of tactical possibilities. but every encounter in destiny so far is very similar.
However, this is a very limited beta, and I can’t believe bungie would release a game without a really deep backstory with a lot of mystery to it. so I’m still optimistic, but the beta itself isn’t even as good as, say, battlefield 4 to me.
