Hi jagr200,

I think that's a little unfair. We are all in the same boat and I am just trying to find a solution.

It will be great if Monoprice produce a cable, however many of us will need custom cables to go behind walls and to trunking (plus it's always good to have several choices). I have CAT6 cable all over the house and will need t balun to pass the signal all over the house. The idea of the kickstarter was to develop a full guide on what the cable consist of, the pin out diagram and guides on how to extend to the 50m point. I need to fund the project as I can't afford to go a buy an xbox one to just destroy which I'm sure a lot of us can't. Of course you are fully entitled to your opinion, but please do not put others down and their projects to try and find solution.

Cheers,

Gary

Hi kylenewman,

I thought from your original post that you destroyed the kinect from cutting the cable. Are you saying that soldering it back it all worked? Were you able to simply extend all the wires over a small distances using electrical wire or did nothing work?

Even if it is the case that you soldered it back together and it worked, there is always a risk that I completely destroy the sensor and the xbox one from a mistake. I was also going to completely dismantle the kinect and xbox so I could post images and diagrams of the internals so us and people like us can upgrade, hack and extend the console.

I was also going to say, that if you did destroy the kinect was there any chance you could send it to me so I can investigate.

Cheers,

Gary

Hi iakouben,

My idea of the kickstarter was to fund the tear down of the kinect so that I could create guides and instructables on how to take the console and kinect apart, how to extend the Kinect cable (primary goal), how to upgrade/replace components (e.g. hard disk, RAM, fans, disk player) and provide diagrams of the system. I can't afford to just buy an xbox one for this project with the risk of destroying it. My son has one for Christmas, but it would devastate him if I ended up destroying it wink.gif Plus remember, as soon as I cut a cable or open up a device I void the warranty and after my experiences with the 360, the warranty is worth its wait in gold wink.gif

Cheers,

Gary

I was able to solder everything back together. It works perfect it is tedious work but if your even a decent solderer it shouldn't be hard.

Kinect 2.0 for pc is showing up to developers. It includes a kinect 2.0 with usb3 adaptor and external power supply. It would be interesting to see if plugging the pc version into the standard USB port on the xbox one would recognize the kinect like it would on the 360.

Found a tear down of that as well:

Looks like there is a map to a standard USB 3 connection.

Interesting group that is hacking the Kinect for Windows 2.0:

Thanks Craer. Does not show the level of detail we would need, but is still useful information.

I know we are all trying to get Monoprice, MS, or 3rd party entrepreneurs to build a cable for us. I for one could not wait. My case is a bit particular as I have a good gap in the back of my TV because of the OMNI mount I am using. So I proceeded to build a shelf for the XBOX One behind the TV. I got inspired by an Instructable.com project using a bookend as a shelf and went to staples and bought: http://www.staples.com/MMF-Industries-9-inch-High-Black-Deluxe-Bookends/product_408682 for $10, some Drywall anchor screws, a rail from home depot. Here are the results:

It is not perfect by it has a 100% Wife acceptance factor. As for me I am still waiting for the long cable, but now I can be more patient.

I hope this post helps some of you folks with similar use case.

MS specifically stated the One is designed to be horizontal.

Ok, so now it is looking like it is a USB 3 connection when the decent USB 2.0 extenders that allow us to use regular ethernet cable for Kinect 1.0 still cost over $200? The regular extender cables will not work for me. My conduit is too tight.

Going to be waiting this out or setting up a rack closer to the screen I guess.

Ended up going the same route as you with two of the 40ft Monoprice HDMI cables mentioned above. Hopefully a real extender cable is released soon, because I do not like having my xbox as the only piece of AV equipment under my 135" screen in my theater room. The ability to use the kinect voice commands is worth it for the time being though.

Subbed for updates on a solution.

Mine would not play Blu-rays or game discs when I placed it vertically. Not recommended though I applaud your innovation.

He could always just go the digital download route for movies and games. This way he wouldn't need to worry about the vertical issue if he never uses the disc drive, might be worth it for keeping the slick install.

But what about the heat exhaust? The XBOne is designed to exhaust the heat straight up. WHich is also another reason why it is supposed to be horizontal.

He has a large enough gap between the TV to vent the Xbox, plus open air all-around, probably better venting than people's AV cabinets or shelves. The only issue is the disc drive for vertical mounting as the fan will vent it no matter what angle as long as the top isn't blocked. Also the hard drive wouldn't be an issue either as that will work vertically as well (just like a external hard drive where the HD is vertical or the last Xbox).

I applaud his efforts too, but how ridiculous is it that we have to resort to all of this nonsense. C'mon Monoprice...all I want for Christmas is another 40 feet!!

Since the kinect cable is removable, I actually think a replacement cable would be better than an extension cable. That way I can run the 30+ foot replacement cable in my wall and not have an extra 9 feet coiled up or have the connection burried in my wall.

I agree with you Spartan, it is ridiculous to have to resort to these steps to integrate the XBOX in an environment we worked so hard to keep organized, not to mention, avoid the wrath of our aesthetic committee smile.gif

I just want to clarify that I did play BDs and CDs (I have not tried games yet) on my XBOX in the vertical position but on some CDs I had to try a couple of times to get it right. I agree with you all that it is not ideal but it will have to do until someone comes up with a better solution. As far as heat venting, as ELMO45 said there is enough gap and the placement of the Xbox at the edge of the TV was such that it is dissipating heat away from the TV.

I appreciate the +1s.

Does the cable just unplug from the back of the Kinect ? Wonder if we can get a replacement cable so we can cut up to try things with...if they were like $15-20 I would grab a few to screw around with to see if I could make it work...

I don't know about that. I suppose you could call Microsoft Support and tell them your vacuum sucked up your kinect cable or your dog chewed one of the ends off and you need a replacement cable. I'm sure they could send you just the kinect cable.

I'm wondering what happens if you hooked a standard usb3 B cable into the kinect and plug that into the usb3 port and added power separately to the kinect.

I was trying to get someone with a kinect 2.0 pc dev version to plug the usb3 cable into the xbox one. I want to see if it will recognize the kinect over the regular usb3 ports like the Xbox 360 did

Subbed. Another projector owner with equipment outside of room. I need at least 25' extension. Fingers crossed for mono price to come through soon.

My room is newly finished and what a shame to have the only piece of gear muddying up the stage be the xbox one. I am probably going to go ahead and mount it in my rack and go without the kinect for awhile.......boo.
