Hello guys. First let me state i love the X1, yet it certainly does have its issues. The biggest so far is the "XBOX on" is completely not working. All settings for it on, yet nothing. Turning on manually all fires up as should... or does it?... Apparently the TV app crashes after awhile in low power state so once turned on, the TV wont go thru the unit, one guide wont load etc.

I read the TV app when the X1 is in a low power state, waiting to hear "Xbox on" for some reason crashes the TV app. I'm also thinking this is why perhaps "Xbox on" simply will not work for us. I can ask it to turn on, wife can, my bro..nothing... It worked maybe 1 or 2 times a few days ago, since then nothing. I have reset the unit, re calibrated Kinect, etc..Nothing.. Yet once on, Kinect responds 90% of the time. It will even turn off console when asked. So why no "Xbox on"... It just may be that app im thinking.

So for now, sad of course its not working as intended i turned to my harmony one and am using that to turn on X1, TV, AVR and Direct TV. Thus far upon turning on the TV will go thru the X1. I'm still allowing the X1 to turn off my devices as that appears to be working as intended. Kinect will change channels, turn up volume, respond to commands etc as usual. For the most part wife decides to use the Harmony instead of voice commands as they just don't work all the time and frustration sets in quick.

Anyways, if anyone having issues also this seems to be the trick, in settings, turn off the option for X1 to turn on when asked... I hope they get all this straightened soon, its quite disappointing and the hardest thing is to convince the wife that she needs to use this. if it worked as it should, easy sell, but now shes just asking why.

Anyone else having this issue?...

Have a great turkey day and be safe.

"Xbox on" always work for me. 100% of the time. It never failed but I heard people are having issue with it. Did you run the kinect calibration with the volume very high ? You really have to crank it up until it tells you its too loud, than bring it down a notch. That's how I did it. Although I am in Canada and we don't have Oneguide, I use the TV apps all the time with my STB and this doesn't seem to affect whether 'Xbox, on" or "Xbox, Turn off" functionality.

Hi thanks for reply. Yes, i re calibrated with volume on higher than we usually listen to which is loud. Done that many times, still wont work. i can stand 1/4 inch from Kinect and say "Xbox on" and nothing. Wife also, nothing. I really think its that TV app though... I turned off yesterday the "xbox on" feature in settings, essentially telling it to not be in a low power state and the TV app works every time. The oddest thing though is once on, kinect gets it right most of the time, which really makes me wonder why it wont on the "xbox on" part... I'm thinking the 2 are related. i wanted to blame Kinect for it at first, yet it works once the unit is on. very strange...

You need the lower power state to use "Xbox, On" and make sure you pause for 1 sec between Xbox and On.

Hi thanks.. it was set for that, "xbox on" simply wont work no matter who says it, no matter what tone, no matter how many inches from mic, tone changes, etc.... yesterday for the heck of it, turned it off as it didn't work anyways and my TV app stopped crashing. So im guessing the low power state was messing up the TV app and may be why "xbox on" never worked from day one.

On thing you can do is press on menu and close the TV apps before "Xbox, Turn off". I have a big living room and I am nowhere close to the kinect sensor and It pretty much dead on accepting all my request. Btw, I have notice the TV apps has a lot of issue dealing with audio sync. I can't watch SD channel if my STB is set to surround sound. I have to switch it back to stereo. There is a lot of bug with the HDMI in sound driver. At least this is my theory.

That may work prior to shutting down, may need to try that, maybe it wont crash. Still though, Xbox on" (when set to turn on in settings) simply wont work for me. I sit about 13 feet from TV, can say it loud, low, stand 1 inch from it, have my wife say it.. nothing. Yet once turned on then manually the Kinect will hear all voices as work without issue. It simply does not like the "xbox on" part.... loud, soft, different tone, different voice.... it just wont turn on. Strangest thing. have recalibrated many time, no difference.

Try unplugging it for 30 seconds. I ran into issues and that fixed everything for me.

read some tips in another forum... might help you out...

Q- Voice commands work fine except "Xbox, turn off!" It hears the command but doesn't understand "yes" or "no"

A- This is a bug I've discovered. The kinect hears all except for "yes." My guess is that the system is stuck in some kind of stand by bug that hangs when trying to shut the system off. The solution is to do a hard/cold boot. Take out the power plug from the P-supply, wait 10 seconds and plug it back in. This has fixed the issue for me when it hangs on that turn off bug.

Q- The kinect cant hear me! I have to constantly yell or repeat my commands!

A- The most important thing is to not scream. You will lose your voice and the kinect will not understand. Calibration settings differ from person to person. You should be able to say xbox go home in a normal voice even from 6 feet away. If you sit 7-10 ft away or use a surround sound system, calibrate with the volume as loud as the kinect will allow since you will naturally be speaking in a louder tone. If you sit 2-6ft away or in an echo-y room, calibrate with the volume as low as the kinect will allow this will allow the kinect to pick up a normal lower tone. Ive done over 150 calibrations with trial and error. My kinect now picks up 95% of what I say.

Q- Xbox, on doesn't work! Ive tried pausing at the "xbox" then saying "on." Ive tried pleading, yelling, and cursing at it. It works sometimes when I get really close.

A- Trying to figure out this mystery took along time for me. It wasn't as easy as the Turn off fix. The problem is where the Kinect picks up the voice when its on standby mode. The only mic that works when the Kinect is on standby is the microphone on the top of the Kinect. My Kinect is situated on top of my tv. I noticed that when I yelled sitting down it didnt work. When I yelled at the ceiling it worked. When I stood up it worked. When I got close it worked. You can say "xbox on" altogether, with a comma, or with a longer pause they all work. Speak a little louder than you would, but do not scream. It also works much better/faster after a fresh cold boot or taking the plug out and putting it back in.

Even though it might sound strange, but keep training your xbox to turn on, turn off, go home, go to "app" like a dog. It progressively gets better kind of like it's learning. It picks up your voice faster and better after the 10th successful try, and even better after the 20th successful try. It also starts to distinguish your voice from background noise/other people.

I hope this helped. I literally did not sleep last night. I want Microsoft to be aware of this Xbox turn off bug. I will continue to research and train my Kinect. I will report results here.

Thanks for the tips. For me, the Kinect will work in any position when speaking out commands only after the X1 is on. Xbox turn off, no problem, works like a charm. Taking the same tone and even asking in the same position Xbox on simply wont work. i have reset the system, unplugged it for 30 seconds plus, even reset to factory settings, no luck. Was at my bros tonight for thanksgivng who also got an x1 and his will work with me saying "xbox on" without fail. I can even say it with much lessor volume spoken. its unreal how well it works. I would say mine after start up, Kinect gets it right 70-80% of the time with a bit more volume to my spoken words, where is my bros i can almost whisper it out in comparison. So i looked at acoustics and he is about 12 feet away as i am, Kinect sits on top of his 65 inch set as mine does. Room about the same size from left wall to the right. Furniture about the same also, so i figure the acoustics are about the same. Yet his unit will perform 100% of the time. Xbox on is flawless, tv commands effort less.... My setup, xbox on wont work at all and once the unit is running, it takes a much more crisp direct voice for Kinect to work.

I'm starting to think I got a bad kinect here. i dunno, its driving me nuts.

Thanks Symtex for all your help and suggestions. I did that the other day... Took it down to about 4 foot which placed it on top of my actual TV stand. Still didn't work, well as far as "xbox on" goes. The rest seemed about the same as being higher. My TV stand is also not flat, contoured so the x1 wouldn't be-able to sit straight. Lower, say on top of my center speaker would work, yet that's only about 2 feet from the ground and Kinect camera didn't like it there. So as of now, it sits on top of LCD tv with a PDP Kinect stand which works great if anyone wants to buy one.

So, perhaps i may have a bad top microphone do you think?... I assumed there was only 1 mic present, the one that has the bar across the Kinect, but you say there is one on top for "xbox on". i wonder if that mic could be bad.

It was setup that way in settings. The first 3 days I had it while I waited for my PDP clip to arrive. Made no difference, "xbox on" would not work. The only reason its off now is im using the harmony to control everything. Tomorrow while the family is gone, ill crank up the volume and try (for the 10th time at least) to re-calibrate. Not expecting much though as i have exhaustively tried this since launch day. Also oddly enough, since disabling instant on my TV app has not crashed once after hours of downtime.

You are mistaking TV/Amp control with Power and Settings. You need 2 things for "Xbox, on" to work. First and foremost. You need to make sure you console is setup to USA. Some country have "Xbox, on" disable because of local laws. Second part, is the Power & Startup setting as shown in my image. You need to be in power mode instant-on. Otherwise, the console doesn't listen to "Xbox, on". Which could explain your problem.

To control the TV and your STB, that's in the OneGuide section. It has nothing to do with what I stated above.

Sym, i understand that. No confusion. In settings all was checked as your image above. What I think you are misunderstanding is I disabled the "instant on" after days of trying to get it to work. Never could get it to work. So up until yesterday it was enabled.

Ok, so now its been established "xbox on" did not work for me. Then I read about someone on the xbox one forums about people having issues with the TV app crashing (as mine did from day one).... There solution for that was to turn off "instant on (xbox on) that resolved the TV app from crashing after the unit was turned on. When i read that, I then disabled the instant on also on my unit and havent had the tv app crash once since.

So again. up until yesterday "instant on (xbox on) was enabled in settings. Been that way since the 22nd and that instant on never worked.
Yesterday i disabled it, and miraculously my tv app stopped crashing.

My thoughts are they were connected somehow. Now i am using my harmony remote to control the X1.

I would though like the "Xbox on" to work.. So today i will try again to enable those options and re calibrate for the 10th time or so to see if I can get it to work as it should. It will also show me after sometime if my TV app will crash again since it stopped when I turned instant on off.

Symtex i appreciate all your help and apologize for the confusion,

Thank you.

Let me ask you, do you think there could be an issue with that top Microphone. I keep thinking about what was said that when in stand by the top microphone is listening, while the bottom is not. Just trying to think out of the box and if that top mic could be faulty.

Why don't you bring your Kinect at your bros place and do a test there ? You have to go by process of elimination. It possible it has something to do with the acoustic of the room.

Agreed.. I have been following the forums on MS and this is a known issue. Not just the TV app, but "xbox on" feature seems to be a huge issue with many. MS claims they are working on it for a patch soon. We shall see as i so want this to work as intended.

i see you just Joined today also. Let me be the first to welcome you to the forums.

Im having an issue with watching TV through my XB1. It lags then loses signal. I tried a different hdmi cable and it still happens. The kinect voice commands work, just loses tv signal.

Just wanted to comment and say that I too have the exact issue reported in this thread. I've just recently started quitting the TV app (and all other apps running for that matter) prior to turning the X1 off; so far, I have no complaints, but I've only just started going about it this way.
