Long story short, I bought a headset that required optical audio, so I bought an adapter that allowed me to run hdmi to the tv for video and optical to the receiver. I was utterly shocked by the improvement in the picture on the TV. I always assumed it did not matter, but the proof is in the pudding. Both relatively new sony components <5 yo. Any insights?

How were you running video signal to the TV before?

Give some more details on what you have and how it is connected. You really didn't give enough details for anyone to say why it might have gotten better.
