New xbox one owner w/ questions

I have my cable box (direct tv) plugged into the system. However, unless the xbox is on, I can't watch tv. Doesn't it pass through video w/o having the system on?
I don't mind but the less tech savy in the house won't want this extra step.

Also, is there any way to stream videos from my plex server? Dlna?

Thanks?

They are working on a Plex app. Just hook the cable to the TV, no reason to put it through the Xbone if you don't want to.

I'd like to have both options, I think the snap to TV feature is pretty cool. So are you telling me that straight pass through to the TV through the Xbox won't work unless the Xbox is powered on?

Passthrough is not an option at this time. DLNA is also missing. Many of us have servers, or NAS machines that could stream to the 360. This is unfathomable to me, In this day and age of connectivity....that many of these things were not incorporated in to the Xbox One.
Stop over at the feedback site, to cast your vote for features that many are requesting.

I use an HDMI splitter and have my cable box hooked up both via the Xbox One (and yes, the One has to be turned on to watch) and directly to my receiver. I love watching TV thru the One. Snapping the TV and having the ability to quickly get into any game is great.
For the less tech savvy in the house, they use just the cable-tv option. I have my Harmony One Remote setup to effortlessly switch between the both activities. In the evenings, I almost always watch TV via the XB1. My remote is also set up so that even when I'm in XB1 Mode, the buttons on the remote are programmed almost exactly as if they are watching only TV. That makes it effortless for them to change channels, get to the DVR etc.
My cable provider, WOW, has great DLNA functionality, and I almost always use it to stream content from my pc, via the cable box, via the XB1. When I don't use that, I occasionally use SKIFTA to send content directly to the XB1. On my PC, I run both PlayOn and Mezzmo. I do have Plex and am also waiting for the Plex XB1 app to try that out.

Get this splitter: http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_i...seq=1&format=2

Works great. When I know I just want to watch tv and not game, I can keep the Xbox off. Most of the time though, I find myself snapping tv and playing. Pretty cool indeed.

Yes. It will require a tablet or smartphone. There's an app called Skifta that you can use to direct video from your plex server to the your Xbox One.
Now here's the thing, the website to this program is now not up anymore. I believe it's Qualcomm's baby so you wont find any real info at Skifta.com (or .net, I forget). It kind of implies they have something else up their sleeves and that something else might be a paid program whereas this one is free.
Whether or not the app is still available to download is another story. It works great though. You just select your source, select the target and then select the movie you want to play. It usually remembers those selections so the next time you just select your movie and play.

Especially now that we have the ability to adjust volume levels for each window.
