Using Xbox One as BluRay Player

With the price drops going on now, I'm thinking of upgrading from the 360 to an X1. I'm not planning on getting rid of the 360 just yet since a.) kids like to use the Kinect, and I don't want to drop the money for a new Kinect, especially with the shorter cord making it impossible to keep the X1 in the media closet and b.) don't want to chuck all the games we have. So that being said I'm wondering if its worth keeping my current BD player (Samsung HM59C) or returning it and using the X1 as our BD. We also use the BD for the streaming apps - we don't use cable or OTA services. The rest of my setup is as follows:

Panasonic Viera 55" TCP50GT30
Onkyo TXNR609
Klipsch HD500 5.1 home theater speakers

I don't plan on upgrading any other equipment within the next year or two as long as it keeps working.

My X1 replaced my BD player. Works great and supports 3D blue rays.

I've read elsewhere that ysing the X1 as a primary BR olayer puts too much wear on the drive mechanism. Is that true?

Also just adding that I use my Xbox One as our only BR player. No issues.

Why not? Being a mechanical component, anytime you spin it, it wears and tears a bit. No difference than you put in a game disc. Except with game discs, it only spins initially because XB1 games mostly require install to internal HDD. With BD disc, it needs to spin for the entire time of the movie. How much this extra wear and tear will impact your drive's life span, who knows.

Don't I repeat don't get a XBox One S as a replacement for a BD-Player. I did and it is terrible. You first actually have to download app which is buggy. It crashes and freezes often. Some disks won't load and the ones that do load don't look as sharp as they do on the PS4 BD Player or even a cheap $60 standalone BD-Player. I since returned my XBox One S because of this and the image being to dark and no only the XBone had a darker picture.

Charter Spectrum powered by Earthlink.
My Router: Netgear R7000 - Advanced Tomato 3.4-140 K26ARM USB VPN-64K.
My Primary Streaming Devices: Apple TV (2015), Roku Premiere.

My XB1 also replaced my BR player, and it works flawlessly. Love it.

It sounds like something is wrong with the settings somewhere or the XBOne S was defective. I'm not seeing a darker image or less detail from my XBOne S on my Sony 850C. It looks similar/the same as what I see from my standalone Sony BD player, Samsung UHD BD player and from my PS4..

I use the XBone as my only Blu-Ray player. It is okay. I had playback issues with only one disc so far (one of the Connery Bond films from the 007 BR collection), and those largely cleared up following an update to the app.

wasn't there an issue with audio channel mapping to the surround channels? was that rectified? I remember something like 5.1 mixes played out of the rear channels instead of the sides.

and atmos is still out of the question on the new model, correct?

There hasn't been such issue with BD player app for a long time. The issue for non-BD apps are real but was fix in latest update. The BD apps are ok. Nothing fancy. Certainly no better than a $50 BD player.
