4k upscaling comparisons?

Has anyone done any comparisons of the Xbox One S doing upscaling to 4k vs letting your TV do the upscaling?

the xbox doesn't upscale games to 4k(only console that will is ps4 pro with the updated gpu). xbox only upscales to 1080p if the game isn't native 1080p just like the original xbox one. then your tv is doing the rest to upscale to 4k. 4k bluray, netflix, etc are only thing that are actually 4k.

It sure does. My tv is displaying at 3180x2160 @ 60hz on the Xbox One S. It was only 1080p on Original Xbox.

lol no that's just what it's displaying at. the game is still 1080p and looks virtually no different than an original xbox one running same game on the same tv. there is nothing magical going on with that underpowered old gpu

Dude. The Xbox One S is upscaling the video signal to 4K. That's what game upscaling is. The source signal is being altered by Xbox One S to display in 4K. The same way X360 was doing it with 720p games when your output was set to 1080p.

you don't get it. it's ok. again there is nothing magical happening with that ancient gpu in the xbox to make the game look any better. the game itself is still 1080.

xbox 1 s does upscale all games to 4k. as for what resolution your tv shows for info, if your feeding it a 1080p signal it will say 1080p. if you feed it a 4k signal this what it will say. you have no idea.

You don't get it

http://support.xbox.com/en-CA/xbox-o...-on-xbox-one-s

4K upscaling
When you set your console resolution to 4K UHD, everything on the console—Home, games, and apps—will display at 4K. 4K content is displayed in its native 4K resolution, and other content (like 1080p content) is upscaled to 4K.
To set your resolution and upscale everything to 4K, double-tap the Xbox button to open the guide, go to Settings > All settings, and then choose Display & sound > Video output. For TV resolution, select 4K UHD.

You have to stop drinking the Sony koolaid. Whether you use checkerboard or any form of upscaling. It's still upscaling. There is no other way to describe it.

Than you should know better. There isn't any magic here. There is no higher res texture. It's not remaster for 4k. It's a pure signal interpolation to 4k. Depending on your TV, it can look better and reduce input lag.

I think it looks great on my TV but i do have a higher end TV set.

this is wrong. It does upscale games to 4K.

The Xbox One S also has a true 4K frame buffer so technically it can render true 4K games as well. This has been confirmed by Eurogamer via Albert Penello, a top-level Microsoft executive. However, the GPU is not fast enough to do detailed 4K games. But if someone wanted a native 4K Pac Man game, they could do it. Neither the OG Xbox One nor the PS4 have a 4K frame buffer so they couldn't render a true native 4K game even if the programmers wanted to. The Xbox One S and PS4 Pro are the only current gen consoles with a 4K frame buffer.

forget it. yall clearly miss the technical part I was talking about. yall have at it. you can't make poop look like better poop after the fact. it's still the original intended poop.

it is effectively doing NOTHING. it's still the same thing the original xbox is showing. put both xbox's on the same 4k tv and you'll see the same exact thing. except for hdr exception.

it's you that's confusing what "technical" means. "technical" and "realistically" are different. The Xbox One S can render a true native 4K game if the programmers write such a game. Can't imagine what the frame rate would be but it would at least run. The PS4 and OG Xbox One cannot run native 4K games under any circumstances.

The PS4 Pro can't realistically run 4K games either. But technically it can. Just like the Xbox One S.

back to the original question... it depends on whether the AMD scaler is doing a better job or the scaler in your TV. You really can't know until you try it. There's no universal answer.

In fact, on my Vizio P50-C1 TV, some movies and games look better via the Xbox/AMD scaler. And some look better via the TV scaler. I popped in an anime DVD and the Vizio did a horrific job of scaling it. Same DVD with the Xbox scaler looked better (not dramatically but still better). Same for games. Rainbow Six Siege looks better scaled through the Xbox than my Vizio. But I thought Unravel looked better scaling through the TV than via the Xbox.

I just have my XBOne S output 4K. It looks fine. Although I can't say I've compared it to what my Sony scaler. But I would need to use some test patterns for that. So even if my TV is better, it's probably a minor increase. I'll continue to my my XBOne S upscale games and everything else it can to 2160P. And if I get a PS4 Pro, I will also have it upscale everything to 2160P.
