The Xbox 360 Elite has been officially announced which can be seen in the official Microsoft press release, this Engadget article, and this IGN article. Here is the official information on the Xbox 360 Elite system:

1. It is called the Xbox 360 Elite and will be a permanent 3rd SKU that will be sold in addition to the Core and Premium systems.
2. It will be launched in the US and Canada on April 29th for $480.
3. It will come bundled with two matching black accessories, controller and Live headset, along with both a component/composite cable and an HDMI cable.
4. It will have several matching black accessories available at retail for the same prices as the current accessories.
5. No change in the use of a standard DVD drive.
6. It will include a 1080p capable HDMI output and a 120 GB hard drive.
7. The 120 GB hard drive will also be available at retail for $180 and includes a kit to allow the data on a current Xbox 360 hard drive to be transferred to the new hard drive. It is not yet known whether this kit will be bundled with the Xbox 360 Elite system or if it will be sold separately.

Additional information from Amir Majidimehr (a VP of Microsoft):

1. The Xbox 360 Elite has a HDMI 1.2 output and for HD DVD audio output you can select DD, DTS, WMA Pro (lossy version), or 2-channel PCM. This information can be seen in these posts (first, second, third). WMA Pro (lossy version) can also be sent out by optical output to compatible AV receivers with the Xbox 360 Elite and with current Xbox 360 consoles with the spring update.
2. The Xbox 360 Elite is not capable of multi-channel PCM with the HDMI output because it would have required more circuit redesign than Microsoft wanted as explained here. The internal audio data path limits audio output over HDMI to either compressed audio or 2-channel PCM. This is explained further in these posts (first, second, third).
3. The Xbox 360 Elite audio output for Xbox 360 games will remain in Dolby Digital and is unlikely to change because of the strict CPU budget used for audio encoding.
4. The Xbox 360 Elite and current Xbox 360 consoles, with the spring update, will allow for the output of either computer or video RGB levels with the VGA output.
5. The Xbox 360 Elite has a full digital video path with the HDMI output.

I'll likely jump on an "Elite" XBox 360 if this proves to be true (and I suspect it will). I use my XBox 360 for more media storage than most of you, so I'll benefit from a 120GB hard drive. HDMI is also the only vessel by which my JVC HD-56FC97 can receive native 1080p inputs. I know I'll have to buy the HD-DVD drive to get the most out of it, but I'd already planned to do that eventually.

On a side note, I think a media source can gauge its credibility by whether or not threads based on news stories it runs, get locked or deleted at AVSForum I have a hunch that this one is doomed for lockdom, but I hope it will survive. I find this discussion both fascinating and informative.

you should cry about it a little more, i'm sure your complaints will have microsoft change their pricing schemes.

seriously, pay to play or shut the hell up. the 360 doesn't need that large of a drive anyway, not for 90% of it's users.

I don't think he was crying about it. It is ridiculous for 120 gig for 200 bucks. Come on now. Get real

well MS can do what they want. and when a 20gb is 100, and a 120gb is 200, i'm definitely not complaining. they could easily charge more, and idiots would still buy it.

What you don't get is that there really aren't that many idiots. MS may have made a pricing mistake if it really will be $200. Saying that it's too expensive isn't whining--it's making a choice not to buy at a given price.

my only point is that even if the price is too high, there isnt much we can do about it, and complaining on here surely isn't going to help. i wouldnt mind having a larger drive, and i dont like the price point either, i just dont see the point in complaining.

The Elite version will eventually become the Premium version going back to a white console and accessories

Hmm, might just wait for the white version of the elite if it saves me $80. As long as it comes down to $399 before Blue Dragon comes out I'll be happy. I returned my premium system a month ago due to the DVD drive failing on me within my 90 day return window. I'm still holding on to the store credit waiting for this new version. This window will let me see if reliability has improved as well.

No 65nm CPU no thank you. I would like a 360 thats quieter but HDMI means nothing to me until there is an affordable 1.3 HDMI switching receiver as my PS3 is using the only port anyway.

I am confused. You state it will include HDMI and a 120 gb hard drive. Then right after state the hard drive will cost 200.00... Am I missing something?

Yeah I think without a Substantial Redesign like the new CPU I would'nt trust a unit with an HDMI port and Larger Hard Drive not to go Red Ring of Death on Me, now if they threw an HD-DVD drive internally into one I might leap at it (even thou I have the Add On)

The price point is a little ridiculous, though I like how the package is all shaping up. But the higher price point just makes me think more of whether I should go with a PS3 or a 360. It's a decision that's only getting harder.

There is no compelling reason for me to upgrade (at this point). My hard drive is only 1/2 full and the PQ via VGA on my little 46" DLP is top notch.

Competing with Sony is certainly a factor but I read on another forum that what is really driving the next version of the 360 is IPTV.

If MS wants to get into the IPTV game, they will need to create a sku that supports HDMI (because of HDCP). Also, if they want DVR, I would say a 120gig HD is competitive.

I honestly didn't know anything about HDCP. If you don't either, here is a link.

Not enough people would buy it to offset the production cost.. Sorry but if it was more than 200 alot less people would buy it because it's really not needed anytime soon..

I'm going to allow this ONE thread to be the rumour thread. Until/IF MS announces something... there will be no new threads on this subject. Just this one...

This forum was getting swamped with them.

I know Microsoft is run by a lot smarter people than me, but I think the price point they set this thing at is ridiculous.

For an extra $80, people are getting (in order of price):
1. Extra 100 GB space
2. HDMI output
3. Live Headset
4. Black color

They're pricing it so that it is just a tad lower than PS3, more HD space, but in the end it is still an expensive piece. I can see Microsoft wanting to milk more money out of the console; but I think if MS wanted to really putting the blows on Sony, they should just take the brunt damage now, and make the elite package to be the Premium and be done with.

What I see going to happen is that MS, rather than being the leader, will follow what Sony will do. MS will wait for Sony to announce a price drop, before making the Elite package be the Premium. With HD-DVD, MS doesn't have all the cards (no control as to what movies will be made on HD-DVD, no leverage to have other movie studios to produce HD-DVD), and Sony is overtaking them now. With the XBox 360, MS has a very good chance to put some hurt on Sony, and they're playing the waiting game.

Ciao.

Isn't $80 worth all that? 100 Gig extra is like a 100 gig hard drive, HDMI cable included and an HDMI port, and a headset. The headset is around $20 itself. Seems like $80 is well worth all this. If you went out and purchased a 100 gig hard drive, the headset, an HDMI cable, plus add in that you can now use the HDMI cable, sounds like $80 is then reasonable. Am I missing something?

What would you need a 120GB drive for? It's to small to archive movies, and too big for demos and what not. The only way this would interest me, and be worth the price, is if full retail games could be downloaded or transferred from the optical disc.

If I didn't have to get up and switch disks when someone who was playing a different game then me sent a party invite...that would be sweet!

Really, what can be done with the onboard $200.00/120GB drive that can't be done with an external usb $160.00/500GB?

This is edition sounds fine compared to the premium 360...But this is really going to burn Microsoft..But I still call BS until MSFT confirms it which they have and Peter Moore said those rumors were not true and they have no interest at this point in revising the console although revisions do happen all the time just not right now because if they do that they feel its alienating the customers so soon...Next X-mas season would be appropriate...The 65nm chips have been talked about for months now...So like I said no big deal.

Whats going to burn Microsofts ass the most is that pricing this console at $479.99 right below the barebone ps3 which is still superior in terms of hardware...This just adds fuel to the fire for Sony and their supporters and looking at the 479 360 and the 500 ps3 it makes the sub-par Sony seem like a good deal...Include HD-DVD or get out of the race with the elite console...Additional money for HDD space that wont be used, I dont think so.

Not sure if I'd do this or not. If it is quieter than the one I got now (launch console here), I'd probably consider it.
