The difficulty in writing a review of this magnitude is the constant struggle to remain objective. There is so much good to say about this title and so very little negative that its one-sidedness might seem a bit unfounded to the reader; I assure you I will do my best in giving as balanced a perspective as I can without giving away too much information. The game undoubtedly captivates from the moment you place the disc into the Playstation 3 and does not let up for its thirty hour duration. Following an opening that literally left me rattled, I found myself having to put the controller down for a few minutes in order to properly gather my thoughts. Like any title affiliated with the name Kojima', Metal Gear Solid 4's comprehensive story, exotic art direction, Hollywood-esque cut scenes, memorable characters, sharp dialogue, and overall quality surpasses anything yet seen on the Playstation 3, and quite possibly the past decade.

As many of you have seen from the dozens of Metal Gear Solid 4 trailers in the recent months, the Middle East has become a war-zone for private military companies vying for power in the region. Shells explode around you, tracers whiz by your head and soldiers gasp their dying breaths all while you take control of Solid Snake, the rapidly aging war-vet and his robotic sidekick, MKII. Stealth fans will take quite a liking to Otacon's prototype robot; he's an absolute blast to operate with the Dualshock 3 (MKII is no longer controlled using SixAxis) and is incredibly useful to reconnoiter areas out of Snake's view. Snake also makes excellent use of his Octocamo suit, which blends into most any texture in the game's expansive levels. For those who'd prefer to stand out like a sore thumb with guns a-blazing, the cover system proves advantageous and exceedingly useful. To summarize, the only film I can recall that has this intense an opening forty-five minutes is Saving Private Ryan.

its comments like this from reviewers that has me intrigued. it is not very often that you read about a huge emotional component in a video game.
this game could end up being very special. the kind of release that advances how games are designed and played.

Have you played MGSIII?

To date, it had the most emotional finish I've ever seen in a game. HGW's music and Kojimas cinematography matched perfectly with the story in it's climax, and Big Bosses realization and betrayal.

If you haven't played it, get on it. It's going to be very relevant to Solid Snakes last hoorah.

I am at the final boss of MGS2 and beat MGS1. I gotta say that the "emotional component" you speak of has been present in both games to a large degree.

You just have to take the MGS games and their stories for what they are. They definitely aren't your typical action game in any way, which turns a lot of people off who like the setting and trailers and expect a romp like your typical action game (CoD4, Gears/God of War, etc.). You already saw that with the MGO beta, with people bitching about how the game wasn't like CoD4 or Halo. It'll happen again.

That review is definitely biased. They shorted the game by .1. I can't really respect that.

I loved the first MGS, didn't like the second, and only played the third installment when they added a third person viewpoint with a movable camera. That being said, the improved MGS3 was one of the best PS2 titles - and that's saying a lot.

I'm glad to read that they did everything right in MGS4!

All this MGS talk made me go ahead and play MGS3.
But somehow it doesn't look as good as I remember on my PS2. The game is upscaled at 1080i with the smooth On and I have a hard time getting used to. My eyes hurt. lol But it is still worthed. My eyes are used to the HD stuff now I guess!

another snippet playstation beyond review

There is only so much I can say in this review without really spoiling too much for any gamer lucky enough to be first inline come June 12th, and subsequently, I will round this off by saying that as a dedicated gamer myself, and after countless hours lost to this incredible franchise, MGS4 Guns Of the Patriots is for me, one of the finest experiences I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing, playing, and controlling, and wish Kojima and his team every future success and thanks for such a masterful, delightful and seductive experience that they have so given me. A mind-blowing stealth adventure for the ages, and a final swansong for the mighty Solid Snake. 10/10

keeps getting better and better

Yes and there was a reason they stopped! People also used to handle your cooked food with their bare hands after handling god knows how many other people's. Progress is good, we should not want it to backslide

Seriously though MGS is not Mario, its a hard core experience. It makes very little sense to CONSUMERS to pack it in. I am sure it makes perfect sense for Sony and Konami. It gives them a game they can finally throw HUGE sales numbers around with, something that has escaped them so far.

(MS did the same thing with Forza pointing out its amazing sales when so many were due to the limited packin)

I know some of us are down on perfect reviews lately (GTAIV ), but here's one for MGS4 worth noting. Apparently, highly respected magazine Famitsu in Japan gave it a 40/40 score. That's only the 7th time in their long history that they have given a game perfect marks.

It's my guess that they only came out with the UK review because of the media embargo thingie. They want to save the US & AUS review until when they can speak more fully about it (spoiler free of course).

I never played and of the MGS games (as I never owned a Playstation before now)

I've only got the 40 gig with no BC. Is the PS2 the only way I can play the previous games?

You can play MGS1 only. You'll need a PS2 of a PS3 w/ BC to play MGS 2 & 3

Game Informer gives out two scores, 10.0 and 9.75:

Quote:

"MGS4 accommodates player choice unlike anything I have ever seen, providing you with the tools to overcome obstacles in any way you choose."

"The freedom even extends to the Boss Fights."

"...a landmark gaming experience that continually astounds with it's variety, depth, and intelligence."

Use this to get up to speed, also cross posted elsewhere.

For you guys that haven't played the series, but want to know just what the hell is going on. here's a youtube series of all the games uploaded by some guy with way too much time on his hands.

Be warned, it's going to be like watching a movie for each of the "Solid" series. It's also missing quite a few of the little gems of dialogue that add to the plot, or build the character development. Over all, it's still going to be the most comprehensive take at the plot minus a plot synopsis doc.

I'll put the movies in timeline order, and the number in parenthesis is the order they were released [give or take], in case you want to check it out in release order. I for one needed this to get filled in on portable opps since I don't own or plan on owning a PSP, but seeing the Graphic Novel of MGS1 was a treat also. Just hit "play all" on the right side of youtube to play the playlist.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater [5]
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Opps [6]
Metal Gear [1]
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake [2]
Metal Gear Solid 1 [3a]
Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes [3b]
Metal Gear Solid: DGN [3c]
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty [4]

Enjoy!

What audio format is this? If any game ever needed PCM or some lossless audio it's MGS.

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

Studio quality tier
Most Major studios>Small Studios>dogs>cats>Warner(the guys that do new movies)

Very Cool joe_six_pack !!! Post your impressions in the MGS4 Discussion Thread to spread the news! Pausable cutscrenes will be welcome news. Where you a little affraid to hit pause the first time because of a fear it wouls skip the cutscene, or did if let you know somehow that it would only pause the cutscene?

I have this game preordered, and I am a HUGE FPS fan, and I love games like Splinter Cell as well that are more elements of stealth and thinking versus pure FPS. I am hoping this game has enough action for me, as I have read they have made this installment for mainstream. I actually prefer a game that won't allow you to run and gun. I want a thinking man's shooter/action game that presents you with situations where you have to plan out how to clear the room or make it across the clearing alive! But......I really need good controls and shooting mechanic. I hope this game feels close to as natural as say COD4, which to me is the GOLD standard for controls. I hope that shooting doesn't feel tacked on and a secondary consideration.

I have never played a MGS game before, but I am drawn in by the deep gritty storyline, amazing visuals, and the stealth/action combo. I just hope the camera and shooting mechanic is really good and natural. Say unlike GTA IV.
