Its funny how people say they offer a warranty with the product and you have to accept that. I'm glad I live in a country where our laws state that an item must last for an acceptable amount of time. This length of time is determined by the type of product and its purchase price. For the PS3 that means 5 years. Sony and retailers continually refuse to service them per our laws on the first approach (most consumers are ignorant of their rights), but if you push it, they cave pretty quickly.

And lets be honest, certain PS3 models have had design and manufacturing flaws, which should be covered out of warranty free of charge.

Any contact info you used would be appreciated. PM me if you don't want to share it in the forum.

Calm the muddy water, it becomes clear.

was about to send my 1-1/2 year old 80GB to Sony, then I found a place that specializes in Console repair (among other things) about a mile from my house. I'll check back and let you guys know how it turns out, could be helpful for those in the Chicago area looking to get a quick repair done...

Edit: Just got a call back, they are charging me $130 for parts and $39 for labor. Replacing the power supply. So, I know the power supply goes for $50-80 online, so a bit of a rip on the parts, I suppose $39 is fair for labor, but I'm willingly paying the premium ($19 over what I would pay sending it to Sony) to get it back quickly for my weekend festivities. I took it in at 11:30 this morning, it's ready about 4 hours later. Not a bad deal if you are in Chicago. The place is called:

Anthony's Repair Shop
812 W. Irving Park
Chicago, IL

5 year warranty? Give me socialism any day.

EDIT: In other news, I just shipped out my "factory certified" replacement today in its coffin. Hopefully they will bury it somewhere where the fan noise won't hurt anyone.

Here's to hoping they get it right this time.

You should be able to go into "Account Management" (I think thats what its called) and redownload anything you have bought from the PS store.

They wouldn't.
I don't have a credit card.

Seeing how I've been through 4 PS2's,2 PS1's and well let's just say everything I've ever bought from Sony has broken on me so I filed a complaint with the BBB. I got no response what-so-ever from Sony. I'm going to call one more time and ask about this "goodwill" thing then I'm going to the FTC. Though I've already traded in most of my games replacing the most beloved ones on the 360 if possible.

Don't ever buy anything from Sony...just don't.

LoL, you gotta love it. Your 360 has broke 5 times in what must be at most 3 years of owning it but you'd rather go back to that after your ps3 broke once.
You also might want to check for some environmental causes of your electronics failing.

I was told that no one, from the lowest phone CSR to the highest supervisor, would be able to authorize a goodwill service on this model.

Also, I was told that my refurb unit would have a 90 day warranty, not 1 year.

I have the 60gb, made in China, March 2007 build.

I will update on how this whole screw-job goes.

I feel really betrayed. I've been a Sony evangelist for years. I stood by them when my Sony GWIII RPLCD set suffered a red blob, then a buzz failure. I paid $600 for this giant black paperweight, which I've loaded with $1000 worth of software, and untold more in Blu-Ray purchases.

Is there anything I can do from here? Does anyone have an email address of someone higher up that I can complain to and get my $164.27 fee waived?

*************

To whom it may concern:

I have submitted a request for repair (#XXXXXXXX) of my 60gb PS3. I have had it for about 2.5 years, and it has now apparently broken, giving me the yellow to red blinking lights error.

I keep my PS3 in an open shelf under my television. It gets plenty of air. It is not dusty. This is a non-smoking household. I have never done anything bad to it, or treated it in a way inconsistent with the operating instructions. It just doesn't work any longer.

I have been told that I will not receive free service because I am out of warranty on this purchase. Now, I understand the need to have a warranty policy with a limit upon it. However, I also understand that it can be in a company's best interest to preserve consumer goodwill in certain cases. I believe I qualify as one of those cases, for the following reasons:

1. I paid $600 for this unit, right before a $100 price decrease on Sony's part. Paying another $150 because it doesn't work properly hardly seems fair.

2. I have been an extremely loyal SONY customer for over ten years. I have stuck by Sony products even when they have suffered failures - I owned a KF42WE610 television ($2500) that suffered two separate hardware failures within the warranty, and I had them fixed through Sony's repair service. This did not deter me from buying another Sony television, (KDS50A2000, $2200) which I am quite happy with. As I tally up all of the Sony hardware and software I have accumulated over the past ten years, I find that the total cost to me is over $10,000. I have told my friends and family how pleased I am with these products, and have inspired several such purchases on their parts, I am certain.

3. I have also evangelized online for Sony's products. You will see from these Amazon.com reviews that not only have my reviews been positive, but they have also been influential. Other Amazon customers have noted that my reviews influenced them to purchase your products.
http://www.amazon.com/review/R7E5Q5PKD43NW/
http://www.amazon.com/review/R9Y15LD66VGC2/

I am requesting that you service my PS3 as a "goodwill" repair, and not charge my credit card (which I have already given you) $160. I believe I have earned this sort of consideration as a loyal and vocal customer of Sony.

I want to believe in your company and your willingness to stand by your products. Please help me to continue doing so.

Sincerely,

Matthew Weflen

Hello Matthew,

Your concerns have been heard regarding the Out of Warranty fee for the PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system.

We value your input and appreciate your support of Sony and the PlayStation(R) family of products. Unfortunately, because the system is over the one year warranty, the Out of Warranty fee of $149.00 is required to have the system serviced. We do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and please do note that Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) strongly supports the quality of its products and backs them with full confidence.

Regards,
Steven C.

Hi there, i went through the same motions as you, but here is how i managed to get fixed for free:

Basically after you receive the email of refusal, i would forward it to your local newspaper as many have columns that deal with consumer issues. As soon as sony was contacted by the columnist, they immediately refunded my credit card .

Yah difference is MS actually fixed it. Stick with the system that works or go pay $300 for a new PS3 when it'll probably just break again based on current history? Tough choice.

The 360 is the only piece of non-Sony electronics to have ever failed on me video game system or otherwise.

Nope and I dusted my PS3 at least twice a month.

Finally got around to it and they wouldn't do a goodwill repair.

Don't ever buy anything from Sony...just don't.
