KONAMI secures the Champions League License for 4 years

Quote:

UEFA Champions League four year deal for PES
Best club football competition in the world to feature in PES 2009 as Konami secures exclusive UEFA Champions League licence
Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd has announced that its PES 2009 title will feature the UEFA Champions League following the conclusion of an exclusive 4 year licence with UEFA. The newest addition to the Pro Evolution Soccer series will be released for PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360 and, PC-DVD on 17th October, followed by a version for Wii in 2009.

The UEFA Champions League deal will allow Konami to use all elements and attributes of the competition to create an exclusive UEFA Champions League mode within the PES game. The licence confirms Konami's commitment to extending the series' reputation as the definitive and most realistic football series available.

The Pro Evolution Soccer series is synonymous with football being played at the highest level, which makes it perfect for hosting the best club football competition in the world, commented UEFA. We are delighted that PES 2009 will feature the UEFA Champions League and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Konami.

This deal showcases our commitment to taking PES 2009 forward in terms of licences and realism, commented Kunio Neo, President for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. The UEFA Champions League is the jewel in the club competition crown, and is just one of many innovations we have lined up for the new game.

Manchester United warm up for PES 2009
Konami snaps up rights for European champions for PES 2009
Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced that it has reached agreement to feature Manchester United in its forthcoming PES 2009 title. The current English and European Champions will appear fully licensed in all versions of the eagerly-awaited football title, which will be released for PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360, PC-DVD, PSP® (PLAYSTATION®PORTABLE), and PlayStation®2, in the Autumn. A Wii version is scheduled for release in Spring 2009.

PES 2009 is the latest installment of the award-winning Pro Evolution Soccer Series, and features a wide array of extensive new additions that will enhance the series' reputation as the most realistic football game available. In addition to all new control elements, and player AI routines that elevate its gameplay to new levels, PES 2009 also enjoys a stunning graphical update. Its players look identical to their real-life counterparts, while new moves, and key online enhancements will further bolster the realism of the new game.

The inclusion of Manchester United within the game is another major step forward for the series' realism. PES 2009 will feature the most detailed likenesses of the European Champions, and full use of the team's kits and club crests. Similarly, PES 2009 also captures the unique skills of the Manchester side's key players with the game's recreations of Carlos Tevez, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Edwin van der Sar boasting bespoke animations to ensure they move like their real-life counterparts in addition to looking like them.

Konami is continually striving to add key licences to the PES series, and the capture of the English game's most successful club is another major step forward, commented Jon Murphy, PES Team Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. The team has worked hard to recreate the skill and pace of Manchester United, and their fans will be delighted with the most realistic recreation of their squad in any video game.

Kop That! PES 2009 and Liverpool FC unite
Konami and Liverpool FC join forces for PES 2009 and beyond
Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced an agreement to become an Official Partner of Liverpool FC, which will see its forthcoming PES 2009 and subsequent titles declared Official Football Video Game of Liverpool FC.'

As an Official Partner of Liverpool FC, Konami has the right to use LFC logos and marks in all its internal and commercial promotions. The team, its kits, logos and players will also appear officially licensed in the forthcoming PES 2009, which will be released for PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360, PC-DVD, PlayStation®2, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and mobile phones across Europe in Autumn, 2008, with a Wii version to follow in Spring, 2009.

Konami and Liverpool FC are also committed to working closely together across a number of promotional mediums. PES 2009 will enjoy prominent signage across Anfield's LED hoardings during all domestic league and cup matches, and will have a regular presence in the weekly LFC Magazine and This is Anfield' matchday programme.

PES 2009 is the latest installment of the award-winning Pro Evolution Soccer Series, and will feature a wealth of extensive additions to enhance the series' reputation as the most realistic football game. The new game enjoys a stunning graphical update wherein its players look identical to their real-life counterparts, while original moves and key online enhancements will further bolster the realism of the game.

We are very pleased to become the Official Football Video Game' of such a respected and successful team as Liverpool FC, commented Jon Murphy, PES Team Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH.

We have worked hard to ensure that PES 2009 will benefit from a wealth of new additions, and working so closely with teams such as Liverpool FC can only enhance our efforts. Liverpool FC fans can look forward to the most realistic video game re-creation of their team, with the likes of Torres, Gerrard and Carragher recreated with an incredible level of detail.

PES has long been the game of choice for a large number of the Liverpool squad, so I am delighted that Konami is to be an Official Partner of LFC, commented Ian Ayre, Commercial Director of Liverpool FC. Our agreement allows for a far-reaching series of partnership initiatives that cover all aspects of the club's media outlets, cross-promotional elements both online and in print and, of course, the closest possible representation of our talented squad in a video game. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with Konami and helping the PES series continue its international growth.

PES 2009 First Magazine Review

Now obviously its all in Spanish, but its safe to say the 92′ at the bottom of the last page is easily translatible

So a fantastic start for PES 2009 then, we should know what PSM3 gave the game in the next few days. For now enjoy the news pics from the game, while we try our best to get you a full translation!

In the mean time, here's a quick translation. Thank you to das1925 for this!

From the article:

- 8 different cameras, and each of them at 3 heights
- It also mentions that all 32 CL teams have full kits and names
- Players change facial expression when they lose the ball, they scream
- A.I. has improved very much according to the article
- The players are very much like the real counterparts
- Great illumination and weather effects
- 19 Stadiums
- 8 Players, 4 Online for regular match
- 7 players, 8 online for Become a Legend
- The Spanish commentators are great
- For kit editing, add images for Logos AND sponsors
- Share replays with friends through the Internet

The good:
The Saga has reached a level of simulation that is hard to improve on
Smoother animations but Mechanical

Conclusion:
The Saga has made a huge step forward, although it has not yet found the 'sweet spot' on the new consoles
The Bad:
The game engine is stuck on last year's, with improvements
Fewer Licenses

The general feeling of the reviewer is that aside the graphics and Licenses which are better in FIFA, the legendary' playability of PES remains.
It would be nice to have the review of FIFA that is in the same magazine.

Graphics: 90
Sound: 91
Longevity: 95
Fun: 92

Overall: 92

Another positive review coming in for PES 2009, this time courtesy of OPM. They gave it a 9/10 and the general consensus, like most reviews that have filtered through, is that it's what last year's game should have been.

Things OPM loved:
-They were able to play free flowing football again, creating some lovely moves.
-Champions League Mode, and the satisfaction it brings when you win it with a smaller club.
-Fantastic Edit Mode
-Stadiums, in particular, Wembley.

They didn't like the menus so much, but I don't think people will mind considering that was the only thing that cropped up on their OPM hates section. (Also, am I the only one who doesn't mind them? They're a huge step up from PES 2008)

Very nice. So we have an officially licensed KingShorty PES thread now?

Speaking of licenses, looks like the la liga teams and serie a are in there, just with different league names. Also the rumor of all champions league teams being licensed isn't true, as Arsenal is still North London. I just hope the edit mode lets you import JPGS of team logos and sponsors, instead of forcing you to use the crappy camera.

Any word on if the ps3 version is equal to the 360 this time? I would hate to have to trade it in for the 360 version again due to slowdown.

Not all the Champions League teams are licensed. But if you look at the edit mode pics, you'll see what the edit mode is capable of this year compared to last year's crap version.

There's is no slowdown as far as I've seen from what I've played with in the Demo.

Also, you can use JPEGs and PNGs but they are better than last year's import with the PS EYE.

Another thing is that the PS3 is able to import chants to play during the game which is really sweet. And I think both games will be able to use custom soundtracks for background music however only the Ps3 will have the option of importing the chants

Edit mode looks much improved this year. PS3 version it is. However, the ps3 slowdown wasn't present in last years demo either... it really only occured during multiplayer while in the box. I guess my only concern would be why dont they have up to date rosters? Shevchenko was traded months ago.

I'm sure they'll have it up-to-date by the time it releases. If not, well, I guess that's just one more thing we have to do.

Looking at it though, they are sem-up-to-date considering Robbie Keane is on Liverpool however Berbatov is not on Manchester United.

The slowdown in last year's game was present in single player as well. Anytime a crowd was present in the box, the framerate would drop. However, I've spoken to a couple people that already have copies of the final builds and they have said that the slowdown has been taken care of for this year's game.

They have been unable to test out the online component because Konami will be opening the servers middle of this week.

The slowdown was even there in last years demo. Download the EU / US versions and then play the smooth JAP demo. I was totally turned off by that. I have FIFA09 now and I really like it. There are some bugs in it that really need to get fixed. I will 100% sure buy PES2009 but I'm not sure which version I will keep: one must go as I have no room / time for two football games. I bought FIFA for a steal price so if it needs to go, I wont be sour. But at the looks of it: PES is to much PS2 engine (in a bad way) for my taste.

The demo has me on the wall.. PES or FIFA... I'm most likely getting FIFA because of my other buddies getting it but I might have to get a copy used for cheaper of PES later on. I liked it much better than last years. Based on the demo, the player character models are almost SPOT ON!

It's not out in the US store. I created a UK account specifically to get the PES2009 demo. It's easy to do and fast to get.

The gameplay, judging from the demo, is much less "arcadey" compared to last year's crap game.

I personally love it. Takes a lot of effort to score a goal, especially for me considering that I always play it on the TOP PLAYER difficulty. Character models are closer to the real thing than what FIFA is offering and the individual characteristics that many players possess are highlighted in PES.

I've pre-ordered my copy from the UK because once they start releasing Option Files, it'll more than likely be done for the UK version of the game as OF's are region locked. Hard to find decent OFs for the US version of the game.

This just proves that soccer does not rank very high in the minds of some people, namely the execs over at EA. How else can u explain a company getting liscences for a game that competes w/ ea. I foresee PES overtaking Fifa over the next 4 years followed by EA buying the Uefa liscence...

I would hope that happens, but EA has a monopoly on the licenses.

PES has lost the Spanish League license as well as Bayern Munich this year but gained the Champions League and Zenit St. Petersburg in their place.

Quite honestly, having the licenses from the get-go makes the game read out of the box. However, Konami (with the exception of last year) has always included stellar Edit modes which makes it much more accessible when it comes to creating stuff. That is one reason why I had a modded ps2 it was so that I could create/download different patches of WE/PES, mix and match and you've got an even better looking game.

I have to agree. 1st few games I played from last year's was very easy for me to score goals especially via crosses and I tried the same tactics in this demo and the D seems a lot smarter. I am gonna be playing this demo more to get the hang of PES controls again. I am really liking the idea of the 'be a pro' where you can play online with other created players at the same time I haven't gotten back into a PES game since the older PS2 versions.

I really wished there were no license lockouts from other developers. I have always liked the custom kits and logos idea but not my thing to customize each and every team. In other words I won't spend much time doing so and I don't want to face the whole 'M. Red' for Man U (albeit this year they got the licenses for more teams which is good). I'm not sure which one I like more in terms of sound. FIFA08 already has a really good ambiance for the crowd chants and I don't want to base anything like that based on 09 demos of both.

I think I've heard that for longer since the PES vs FIFA battle has happened. I applaud the teams and leagues that license to both and hope EA is fine with a lil competition. Soccer worldwide is the greatest, biggest, most played, most watched sport in the world. It's a lot easier to license US only sports like NFL, NBA, etc than it is to get every team, league and player right. I don't think PES in the USA will surpass FIFA but in europe it very well has that chance.

This year you can import your own chants for PES on the PS3. It's a really cool feature. They also have custom soundtracks although the music in the background on the demo was definitely better than PES08.

I agree, a little competition always makes for a better product. In the end the consumer wins.

I don't think FIFA does as well in Europe and Japan as it does in the US. PES sells really well in those regions. However, as long as you're a footie fan, many will buy both because their mates play one or the other and footie is always more fun and intense when playing against other human players.

On another note. I really hope that Konami can step up next year's commentary. Last year was decent but this year, from what I've read, seems to be a step backwards.

FIFA has got the two best in Martin Tyler and Andy Gray.

I'm a big fan of futebol and on a few soccer boards that I can easily get into tourneys and games with both titles. For me it's my own personal friends are more FIFA guys so FIFA09 on PS3 is a no doubt pickup. My problem now is whether or not to get PES09 now on PS3 or wait it out to get it later, and then on which system

Importing chants sounds really cool. Wonder how importing chants and team logos and colors will be done. Wasn't last years only available on PS2 and PC and no custom stuff for 360 and PS3 versions? I agree that EA signed the best 2 commentators. It's one thing I like hearing, even if repeated for the 50th time in 1 game

PS I like Messi, but there should be others above him as the cover art star

I'd suggest the PS3, but that's because you can import the chants, you can't do that on the 360 (at least not to my knowledge).

The edit mode has been set up to make things real easy for those that are not hard core editors of the game. That's where OFs come into play and those are easier to obtain on the PS3 as well. (keeping score that's PS3 2-0 360).

The cover stars are region related. Like last year had Owen and Ronaldo on the UK cover but only Ronaldo for the US. I'm not sure who else is going to be on it though.

I liked seeing Ronaldo on the cover but then again, I'm biased as I'm Portuguese

After what he did last season for Man U, he should be on the cover to BOTH games, but that doesn't square too well I bet

I'm tempted though... I was so disappointed in PES 07 for the 360 so much that I didn't even bother with 08 on either system.

You should give the demo a try. It took a game or two to get used to it, but considering you did not play 08, I think you might be able to jump right in.

Oh I have, and I dig it. I did play 08 at a buddy's and found the goal scoring to be easier. I didn't pick up 08 cuz of my disappointment with 07. 09 though has me thinking... Do I really wanna own 2 soccer games lol

Well, look at it this way. I'll compare it to two driving games.

Gran Tourismo series has been a hard core driving simulator.

GRiD is a racing sim but not that hard core as the GT series.

FIFA09 is the equivalent of the GT series where as PES is the equivalent of GRiD.

Is this confirm? I like getting OF from UK sites for patches of previous PS2 PES games. But for the PS3, I did not know that you need to have a UK game. If thats the case, I will be also getting the UK version of the game. Will it have spanish commentary? Also, where did you order it from? Thanks!

Well, that's what it was like in PES2008 where the OFs would work with the region of the game you had. So UK OFs with UK version only.

I pre-ordered from Shopto.net they have a nice deal going. That's where I got PES2008 from last year as well.

The promo copies are out for the game already.

I'll keep updating as soon as I get more reports on it. Here's a brief write-up from what's been known about it so far.

Quote:

So happy to confirm we have the game in our hands.

I’ve been playing it quite a bit already, and while I can say the gameplay is similar to the demo, the graphics have that extra polish the demo missed.

Squads, like we said in the podcast, are exactly the same as the demo. Unfortunate for online players, but that should be sorted with these online updates.

For today, expect some videos in the evening of various modes. Also watch out for our kit editor Carl Brook’s post’s, he’s gonna be showing you just what he can do with the edit mode. Expect big things!

A quick write-up on the Edit Mode capabilities and limitations

Quote:

So… here it is. A comprehensive breakdown of all the editing ins and outs;

- There are a total of 40 slots for club emblems (These are 127×127px and can be imported from HDD and Playstation Eye, or of cause you can use the pixel paint function).

- There are also a lot more slots for kit sponsors, the size of these cover the majority of the front of the shirts and allow for some creative template solutions (These are imported the same way as emblems but save in the same format as last year) I have yet to hit the upper limit of these and I am currently at 10 designs so all is looking good so far.

- All aspects of player creation are the same (i.e no option for untucking shirts, though shirts will untuck throughout the game)

- Templates are greatly improved over last year, with designs for most of last seasons styles, unfortunately this is actually one of the problems as I am struggling to create an Arsenal kit. There just aren’t enough options around the shoulder and sleeve areas. All in all though its still a massive improvement

- Unable to edit boots

- No Shark heads found as of yet.

I have yet to import any chants so I will save feedback on that for another post. Editing music is as simple as creating a playlist on your XMB and then selecting that playlist within the game. You are able to assign certain mp3s to certain menus and modes also!

You can also expect some screenshots of my progress tomorrow evening, I have already added emblems for the entire Premier league and done kits for a few key clubs

All in all i’m impressed by PES this year, the game as a whole is greatly improved, and I can’t wait to get back to it.

Just for the record, FIFA 08 was the top selling game in the UK last year. Not sure about the rest of Europe. PES was 4th.

I preferred FIFA last year but I'll certainly be checking out both before buying one.
