Hi there,

Have a look here: PS3 Media Server

Just imagine a Java based, OS independant (Windows or Linux), small application for streaming on the fly any HD content to a PS3, including MKV, including DTS, including subtitles...

I personnally stream a 720p MKV (h264+DTS+subtitle) in real time using my old Pentium 4 C @ 3Hgz (yes, a 5 year old pentium).
1080p would need a stronger processor, as the author uses a Core2Duo.

It's still beta, but it sure rocks

Cheers

Well, can you for example transcode on the fly with these options (Tversity...) a HD MKV 720p + DTS + subtitles ?

No success for me except with PMS. It's standalone, it's java so windows or Linux.
Just try it, you won't regret.

cheers

Are you planning on establishing Sourceforge or similar project page on this one?
I believe we are quite many willing to give our share on developing DLNA server (in java).

PS3 does not see the server running on my vista pc. Tried hard coding both the name and the IP address in the conf file no luck so far.

You can also try it, v0.96 is stand alone. Just unzip and run the pms (you'll need java6).

Enjoy

Any firewall (vista or other?)?
I just tried it with default settings. The server just register itselfs and shows up in the ps3.
Technically (as for network/firewall configuration), I had no problem using twonky before. ("using it" only, although twonky couldn't manage mkv with subtitles...)

I'll ask the author to come here and try to help

I've been able to run many different servers with no issues, tversity, nero, twonky etc etc. I tried the hard coded addresses and name, I tried changine the port numbers. I don't run a firewall since my intenal network is isolated from internet.

I never got it to work through Parallels so oh well. But it looks like you must edit the config files just like Fuppes in order to set up your shares.

Sorry to say, it was a complete bust for me, too. Edited the hostname. Edited the port number. Made sure I had Java 6. Nothing. My PS3 (that instantly recognized TVersity and PlayOn!) just won't see it.

But I'll keep watching the boards for installation and configuration advice. If it does what the programmer intends, this could be a winner.

I got this working very nicely today using one of the new versions the programmer is working on (but hasn't yet released to my knowledge).

It works great. You actually just browse the folders on your HD--no UPnP scanning and folder creation stuff--and it's quite self-contained and an easy install. It even transcoded with my srt subtitles inserted and did, to my mind, a smoother job of it than TVersity.

If this comes to full completion, it could be a real TVersity killer, IMO, for those of us who are just streaming to a PS3 and don't jockey about with TVersity's eccentricities. Which is not to say that it has limited features, it also does Internet radio and video.

A new beta version of this media server has been released at http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/

If you've struggled with configuring other servers to work with the PS3, check this one out. The programmer has added some interface refinements in this version and some of the bugs in the earlier one--that previously prevented me from running it properly--appear to have been resolved. I've still found a few things that I can't play (haven't yet gotten it to work with FLAC files, for instance); but some of the things that TVersity struggled with, like supporting SRT subtitle files, is pretty much seamless here.

Hi everyone. Even if the network mechanism is much robust than before, Unfortunately, there's still some problem with another user, but I'm working with him and hope to found quickly a solution

This app is working great with the patched jar file you linked me to. I really like the browsing and I'm streaming tv shows recorded in HD from my media center windows pc with no stutter and the fast fwd works too. Also like the Video thumbnails. Had some stutter on M2TS bluray rips but haven't had much time to play with this yet tonight. Keep up the great work. I might be able to blow off tversity and twonky on my pc and just leave twonky running on my infrant NAS box. Thanks again for this tool !!

It should. Almost all other streaming programs do.

i just switched over to this tonight after using tveristy for a while. this runs great... main issue i had with tversity was trouble transcoding 720p mkv. put PMS on and it did it fine... next update supposedly will support .iso loading (and vob/video_ts recognition). it seems to be a lot less resource hungry too...

going to stick by this for a bit longer...

Has anyone been able to get this running with vista? I have configured my router properly, turned off my firewall, made sure ports were open, but nothing seems to be working. I keep getting the message "Receiving search request! Sending alive message...", but nothing on the xmb.

Seriously Tversity is utter crap compared to this application. The programmer has done an amazing job and we must applaud him for doing great work. It doesn't require anyone to follow bible of instructions and doesnt ask you to lose your faith before running it. Its simple file that extracts to a folder, double click to open and viola! it detected my PS3 and was able to stream, MP4s etc with no problem whatsoever.

Thanks very much for this.

I concur. This is an excellent program. Mad props to the developer. Goodbye TVersity.
