Seriously, I just got a YLOD no more than 1 hr ago. Could this be the reason.

Same annoyances are still present in this revision:

1. Battery indicator appears over the clock when you press the PS button (stupid stupid stupid).

2. MP3 player has useless volume controls which only marginally change the volume. So far all times I have attempted to use the MP3 player while playing a game, the volume is drastically higher from the MP3 player compared to in game sounds and there is no way to reduce it enough since it maxes out at the mysterious "-4" setting (db?)

3. Blu-Ray preferences do not have a permanent "disallow Internet access", only "allow" or "ask". It is annoying to have to manually say no every time a movie is popped in.

Cheers

Agreed. Every time I press the PS button to check the time I have wait 5 seconds for that to go away. Move it somewhere else!!!

I voted improved cause I had a ton of divx videos on the ps3 that didn't work, but magically play after the update!

Also, trophies now load up in a reasonable amount of time. So now I can see what trophies people have

I feel your pain Teck...just happened to me. Like you, there are just too many variables to pin it on the FW update.

Make that 3 of us. Mine went YLOD on friday after the FW update. Of course I would like for it to be directly related so sony might feel compelled to give me a break on fix it tax but there are too many possible contributing factors that come into play.
My machine is/was a 60GB launch unit upgraded to a 250GB HDD. I've had it since March 07. On Thursday I booted up at 5PM, started the 2.7 download and then went over to the computer to surf while it dl'd and installed 2.7, that process seemed to go fine, i came back to the PS3 and started playing Burnout, after about 2 hours of that my GF got home and we watched TV, I left the PS3 on the XMB for about 1 hr. After that I went into the PSN and loaded up pretty much all of the new free stuff from the store for download and then set it to turn off after DL. On friday afternoon I came home from work, hit the power button and then let the dog out for a couple minutes, when I got back my PS3 was frozen on the flowing smoke screen, the power button had to be held down for 5 seconds to get the machine to cycle off and then on the retry it went YLOD. I think in the future I will do somethings differently.
First and foremost I will more dilligently clean the dust bunnies off the vent area the PS3. Secondly I will make backups of my data at least monthly for th whole system and more often of the game saves that I am currently playing. Third, I'm am going to give my machine a little more rest on the days that it installs new FW, and finally I won't set it and forget it with the store downloads.

I always do FW updates via USB drive instead of downloading. Takes a lot less time.

Error 8002ABOB is NOT an HDMI error. It is a PSN error when sending a person of your friend's list a message from the PS3 XBR. Never happened to me until the 2.7 update and has happened to others. It does not happen all of the time either. Sometimes if you wait 2 minutes the message will go through. I thought my friends were blocking me or something. LOL.

Ah, I'm with you. Sounds like a bug. At least it's not an HDMI error, in that case you'd not be able to even use your PS3.

I've noticed since the firmware update that a lot of my cd's that I ripped to the hard drive are saying format not supported when I go to play them. It's very irritating since it was fine before the update. I guess I will delete them and recopy to the hard drive and see if that fixes it. Anyone else experience this problem?

I wonder if that has to do with CD's and such playing correctly in 2.0 and the others you ripped did so based on the older FW spec so they won't play now.

Make that fourth. After hearing the fan sounding like a jet engine, I tried to
clean it. Shut it down via XMB, wait until stanby, flip the switch in the back,
remove the plug. After all that I vacumed the vents, polished the chrome,
and everything with a game inside but I really didn't shake the console or
hard just to wipe it. I plug it back it then 3 beeps and flashing red lights. I was
like WTF happened. There is no yellow or green lights, when you flip the switch
in the back 3 beeps and just pure flashing red lights. It's ironic how right before
cleaning I was thinking that it's sad those people's PS3 is breaking down. LOL.
Any solutions? It's 60GB launch edition BTW.

There is always someone out there that gives you opinion of a product that they don't even own.

know of any way to get a game out? The power button just blinks red and won't let me eject a rented game I have inside.

nope...I'm stuck with the same situation. Actually, I purchased the game on the same day that my PS3 died. Not only could I not attempt to exchange it for a 360 version, but it's gotta go to Sony with the unit to get repaired.

I feel kind of lucky for hitting the eject button on mine while it was frozen on the flowing smoke screen.

Before and after the update for some reason I still cannot download episode 6 of Dollhouse. It shows it is downloading and then it is no where to be found. I am going to try and catch up on Prison Break and see if it downloads but Sony refunded me my money. Other then that I never have issues.

The 5.0 is here

Is it possible that Sony went the way of MS and made self destructing 60gbs so customers would have to go buy another ~2 years later?

On a positive note: Text chat is pretty awesome.

I got a refurb 60gb back.
