Sorry if this might be a silly question...

I have my PS3 connected via HDMI to my VSX-918V-K. I am outputting via LPCM on the BD/DVD audio output option.

When a DD/DTS dvd or Bd is playing I press select on the PS3 controller and it indicates the DVD/BD is outputting DD or DTS. However on my Receiver (VSX-918V-K) the DD/DTS indicators do not illuminate.

I can confirm that 5.1 sound is being generated to my speakers. But the only indications I see on the receiver is PCM.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why this is? (No Pun Intended ^_^?

Hi,

This is because the PS3 is effectively doing all the "work".

The PS3 is actually decoding the DD/DTS stream and then sending the individual speaker signals to your receiver. As a result, the receiver doesn't have to do any decoding and therefore the DD/DTS logo never displays on the receiver screen. I have a Pioneer VSX-LX70 and is does exactly the same thing.

Now, if you were to run an optical cable between the PS3 and your receiver and select the output to 'Bitstream' (instead of 'LPCM'), you would get the icons showing up on your receiver, as the console will be sending the audio to your amp "raw" and "decoding" would have to be done. However, if you were to do this, you would miss out on losses audio on blu-rays!

Regards,

Makes sense now that you explained it.
Thanks so much!

I think I'm having the same problem, but I am not sure. I have HDMI going from the PS3 to the receiver and whether I play BR, DVD, or games my receiver is showing PCM. I hook the same hdmi cable to the xbox360 and the receiver says dolby digital.

You guys are saying this is not a problem and I am getting the correct sound, only the PS3 is doing the decoding (that xbox360 doesn't) therefore the receiver is just showing pcm?

I went through the setup and all the sound formats are checked and everything.

Yep!
You got it! I will admit it was difficult to wrap my brain around the concept also. But once you listen to lossless audio you will wonder how you ever lived without it ^_^
