Platform: PS3
Release Date: November 2009 (Japan)
Genre: WTF?!

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/101/1014873p1.html
Quote:

PS3 owners can look forward to a unique, all-original action RPG called "3D Dot Game Heroes."

3D Dot Game Heroes is set in the Kingdom of Dotnia. This world was once made up of 2D sprite art like something out of an old school game. However, wanting to attract more people to the kingdom, the king decided to use technology to make everything 3D. This is where something goes horribly wrong, although just what that is has yet to be specified.

Quote:

Despite the retro theme, the game does look impressive technically. It's being developed by Silicon Studio, a developer who worked with From on PSP's Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke, but who also does middle ware.

In line with the visual style, 3D Dot Game Heroes has some traditional RPG themes. The game's background story involves six magic orbs which were stolen by a demon of darkness, who was then defeated by a brave swordsman and sealed away using the combined power of the orbs. You play as the grandchild of that brave swordsman, and you're tasked with saving the world.

For now, 3D Dot Game Heroes has been announced exclusively for Japan. Players can look forward to a release this November.

No offense to anyone who's excited about this title, but I hope Demon's Souls sells like hot cakes and this dot game completely bombs so their next title is another awesomely dark fantasy action rpg.

Hey, I practically started this thread. Slacker George found that information in response to a question from me in another thread. Tell me you're not greedy for your favorite types of games.

Yeah this does have a lot of potential. I like the art direction but I'd definitely have to play a demo to see if this is for me.

I'd probably check out a demo out of respect for what they did with Demon's Souls.

Is Demon's Souls ever gonna get an official US release?

It's not the same team that made Demon's Souls.

I'm not sure what the exact arrangement is but From Software is listed as the publisher at IGN. I guess the thread title's a little misleading.

Wow... this game looks interesting. From that video it definitely looks like old school Zelda which is a good thing... but I just don't know yet lol.

Have you played Demon's Souls? Setting aside, that game is all about originality. The fun part I suppose would be limited to how much you enjoy cripplingly difficult action RPGs I suppose.

I hope that's sarcasm, this looks like a pretty blatant Zelda ripoff, gameplay-wise. A welcome and clever one, but a ripoff nonetheless.

I realize you weren't saying otherwise but I would like to point out that that appears to be the point.

I'd certainly call the art style original. It's like a Link to the Past pop-up book were it designed by Yoshitaka Amano. The gameplay is hard to call right now. It sure LOOKS like a rip-off of the Zelda formula but we still don't know a lot about it. I'm going to reserve judgment on that until more details are released.

The art style is definitely original and looks fantastic, but that'll only get you so far. Okami had a very unique style to it that I thought looked gorgeous, but the game was really boring and I never finished it. Part of me hopes they do shameless ripoff Zelda gameplay, since we know Zelda gameplay is solid stuff and Nintendo is busy putting Link on toy trains and crap at the moment.

To me it looks like the Lego games, not with Lego blocks but with something resembling them, combined with nice current-gen lighting and depth of field effects. Maybe it's what the Lego games would look like if they were built for PS3/360 instead of for all the consoles.

What? I'm sorry what!? You didn't like Okami? Well then that settles it, your opinion is no longer valid.

Kidding and Okami obsession aside I'm kind of hoping for this to be LoZ type game with some light RPG character building integrated.

I actually am MORE interested now that it looks like Zelda. That's a classic game and play style I always loved. Even went back and played the Zelda remake they did a few years back for PC. Would definitely get this if they do a good job.

I like the idea more than I like the specific execution. I think it'd be cooler if it looked more like that White Stripes video.

But perhaps some of the charm is lost on me since I never played Zelda.

The PS2 wouldn't even be able to pull off those graphics. Maybe you just don't like the art style.
