Designed by the good people behind Devil May Cry and Resident Evil 4, here is Dragon's Dogma (Spring 2012):

Quote:

The player will be able to select between various types of characters, of which three have been revealed so far: the attack-focused fighter, the magic-focused mage, and the speedy strider. Gender choice and appearance settings will also be available.

While the player's party is exploring the world, the three party members who accompany the main character will be controlled by artificial intelligence, but the player can issue orders like "Go", "Help" and "Come to them". One of the party members is a non-playable character (NPC) and belongs to the main character's world. The other two party members are NPCs borrowed from other players by connecting online, but the game will not require an internet connection. However, the player can only borrow the NPCs from other players, not their main character. The party members will talk, seek out the main character's help, and will even provide information about enemies. The player will need to work on strengthening not only the main character but the party members also.

The game will feature a "grab" action, where the main character can grab on or cling to enemies. The player can use this feature for more advanced attack means. For example, the main character can either grab on to a giant griffon's legs and attack it directly, or climb up to reach the top of its head for a more lethal blow. "In a lot of action games, with big enemies the tendency is just to have you hacking away at the shins. You don't get the full effect of fighting a giant boss," Itsuno, the director of Dragon's Dogma says. "With this game you can climb all over it. If it has a body part, you can attack it."

In addition to the large open world, Dragon's Dogma will also feature a large main city environment with over 300 NPCs who will move about according to their own time schedules. The player will be able to communicate with the residents in full voice.

The game is being designed to be playable even by those who aren't too skilled at action games. These types of players can recruit strong NPCs and let them do the fighting during combat as they watch over the battlefield.

Players can look forward to anywhere between 30 and 100 hours of game time from Dragon's Dogma, with the former figure for normal play with the latter figure for those who wish to dig in to the game.

That's kinda cool! But, you can't actually play with other people?

Kinda sounds like Gun Bros for mobile devices.

Meh.. Capcom.

I'm currently trying to play through DeadRising 2. Trying...

Looks pretty sweet! Bethesda should take note on the ease which the player was able to cling to the griffon.

*** E3 2011 UPDATE ***

Say, doesn't the dungeon action in this video remind you of a certain PS3 sleeper hit that came out in '09?

Single player only it looks like, but you issue commands to teammates.

Online interaction details revealed in this video. Though there is no co-op, there is a system that interacts with "pawns" people online have developed, and your pawn can get experience for you if recruited by other people as well. It's pretty unique:

Refreshing to see something new in the western RPG genre
joeblow's Avatar joeblow 07:20 PM 09-03-2011
Heh, I guess mission accomplished for Capcom. This game is developed in Japan, but it does have a strong western vibe like Demon Souls.

Looks more and more like a cheap cash-in on the success of Demon's Souls.

Capcom must be pissed at From Software. A tiny company like From Software was able to do what a huge company like Capcom still hasn't been able to do. They created a Western-style game that's a hit in the Western market.

Here's a hint, Capcom: try re-hiring all the talented designers you chased away, and stop letting your marketing department run the entire company.

I'm sure that in between breaks counting their money, they look at each other and say, "Dang, I'm pissed." Then they go on counting.

Their recent fighting game successes (SF4 and MvC3) and their perennial money-maker (Monster Hunter) are all luckily more than making up for some of their catastrophic failures at Westernization.

The same thing I was thinking about when I saw the videos.

Copy of Demon Souls or not, that footage looks freakin' awesome!!! And if it's not as challenging (read: broken) as Demon Souls I'll buy it day one!
TyrantII's Avatar TyrantII 11:27 AM 09-06-2011
Nothing broken about DS. It just wasn't a simpleton hack and slash game.

as for Capcom, they in a serious funk gameplay wise. Unfortunately like EA, they have the name, history and the cash reserves to continue to pump out crap that gets just enough sales to continue to do so.

It's sad that after the "awakening" that RE4 was supposed to be, the IP is almost dead after RE5.

Game looks pretty awesome... but I still haven't even started Dark Soul's yet or put much time into Skyrim.

Looks promising. I haven't been interested in anything since Dark Souls. This looks like it could fit the bill.

Demo will be out today!!

The speed / cartoony fighting bothers me. Also, though DeS/DkS has the perfect melee / knight control set up. Gonna be weird button mashing triangle and square to attack. If you can remap controls, that might not be an issue.

Sadly it appears there's no online / coop. You can share stuff online, but they only become NCP's in your world.

Also, whats the deal with Capcom? Are they refusing to hire VA's for anything but Resident Evil? Looks like this game goes the Dead Rising route and only has text popup's to display dialogue.... and here I thought we were in the 21st century.
joeblow's Avatar joeblow 09:32 AM 04-24-2012
Hmmm, there are voice overs in the game from early previews. It is during the action though, and in the early builds was a bit repetitive as AI team mates kept shouting out strategy hints and status updates. I wonder if that's been toned down.

The demo is up on the Japan store right now. Apparently it is in English.
TyrantII's Avatar TyrantII 12:42 PM 04-24-2012
The way DR did it was there were cut scene's with VA work, but anything in game gameplay got text treatment (which was most of the interaction / backstory). There was shouts, voice work, explanation type stuff but it was minimal and repetitive.

Me being cynical, It's a way for them to save money on VA's in open world games with lots of interaction. Contrasted with games like fallout and skyrim, that's a lot of VA work and data for quest games.
frankthetoad's Avatar frankthetoad 01:05 PM 04-24-2012
I'd rather games like this do text anyway. I always turn on subtitles in every game I play. I like to be able to skip through them after I've read the text (which is faster than hearing them talk), and sometimes it's hard to understand what they're saying.

Either use a stretch mode on your TV or wait for the PC version. They either did it to lower the graphics load or they just wanted a cinematic POV, and if it's the latter, you're on AVS complaining about aspect ratios?
d3code's Avatar d3code 08:34 AM 04-26-2012
1. Real answer lower the graphics load
2. Capcoms excuse, they just wanted a cinematic POV

a game should be full screen always.

we had already subpar hd standard games but at least they are full screen.

what will be next? games editted by the guy who di dthe transfer for the last emporer. what was it 1:2 lol

It is a technique to reduce how many pixels they render, better some black bars than sub-HD resolution. Ratchet and Clank did a similar thing, but it was a tiling thing I think.

Man, I'm much less discerning that you guys (I'm a well-known non-discernerer) and as far as I'm concerned, if it's fun: Green bars, black bars... who gives a shi%...?
